Title: Drenrin's Sprites
Post by: drenrin2120 on June 23, 2010, 07:17:56 PM
So I've worked with rm2k3 for a long time and haven't done much of my own graphical art. Only edits of graphics available. This is a gallery of some of the things I've been trying to work on. It's all been blown up from original size. And none of it is really finished.

ORIGINAL WORK
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v244/drenrin2120/Girl_WhiteDress.png)
I modeled her after a ff6 sprite of what I believe was Celes in a white dress.

I did use a template for this guy. I'm not too fond of his hair.

I like this little guy, the facesets aren't anything spectacular and his walking pose needs work.

It's a tent.

EDITS
Anything from here on are just edits I thought might be interesting.

^ Original  by some guy calling himself Salmon^

^ Finished Edit^

I like the girl. If you finish that up, I'd like to use her as an important character in my game.

The guy looks like a template, with a bit of a lack of colour depth.

The other guy looks cool, like an old Apogee side scroller. That's a totally in the ether reference too.

Post by: drenrin2120 on June 28, 2010, 02:43:30 PM
Thanks! I made the simple guy for a possible experimental side scroller. I tried to keep it simple as it was my first real attempt at spriting.

Here's more of the girl. I don't have much time lately, so there's not much more. I like how the front walking pose came out, but I'm not too sure on the side. The dress and the hair are really tough.

DONE! It took me a little longer then I would have hoped, but it's a fully animated sprite!

AND a preview of what I'm planning to work on next. =D

I like the platformer sprite. Really cool :p

Thanks MT. I made it first because I figured it would be an easy thing to start spriting. The actual poses are a little tough though, being restricted to so few pixels with such complex movement.

But geez, I haven't seen you in ages. 0_o What have you been doing?

It looks nice to me.  I'm not a fan of that kind of face, but it looks like it supposed to.

Post by: drenrin2120 on June 30, 2010, 02:37:41 PM
Thanks AFL. I kind of agree with you on the faces. At least personally, I think they're too wide. So I changed it up a little bit. Not a huge difference, but enough where I think it looks noticeably better.

That helped alot actually.  The biggest thing for me is that it looks like their mouth and neck are one. o.O  I like the head width change though.

Post by: drenrin2120 on July 02, 2010, 06:19:52 PM
Thanks, I kind of agree with you on the neck thing, maybe it's just me but I don't see it as that big of deal.

More complete sprites! I'm mainly curious about the mech guy. It's just a recolor of a ff6 magitek armor sprite. I wanted to make one from scratch, but that would've been a little too tough for me.

I have a set that I pieced together to use in AoA. You're more than welcome to use it if you'd like.

Something better. They're suppose to be a quaint, space traveling lizard/dragon/intelligent species that prefers  to live peacefully with the aid of magic.

So yeah. On the left are the females, on the right are the males. The silver dude is a possible king of sorts.

Thanks guys! =D The cape was the toughest, but I think it came out alright.
Here I was experimenting with lighting and shading and trying to make this tree not look like ***.

Hey, it's been a while. I've been swamped with a ton of stuff the past month.

It's Hector for AoA. On the right is Hector being King-like and the left is Hector ready for battle.

EDIT:

oh, and this.
I was trying to make a bird-like monster, it looks more like a chocobo. I may still use it.

I remade the baddies just cuz the black line looks like ****. Here they are with a few poses

I'm considering creating a fully animated battle system similar to Chrono Trigger, so all enemy sprites will be fully functional.

Nice Sprites so far, Dren. Love the fact that you're making them custom this time around.

Biggest thing I would suggest is giving your characters more unique bodies. All the males seem to have the same body, just different cloths. The females also seem to share the same body shape.
Title: Re: Drenrin's Sprites
Post by: drenrin2120 on August 03, 2010, 01:00:57 AM
Thanks Muraiko! That's not such a bad idea. If I'm gonna make my own sprites I might as well experiment with body shapes. For some reason, that never really dawned on me.

For now, here's some more tiles I was working on. These are just experimental.

May I swipe some of those for a chipset I could use in my own game?  The style is similar enough to the other graphics that I could probably get away with it.

My word! You've certianlybecome quite the talented spriter in such a short time. :O Nice work man! I'm collecting this like I do professional stuff like my huge collections of  FF monsters sprites way back in the day XD Keep it up! If this was a DA page you have long ago earned a watch from me. ;)

@Emerates: Most of it is unfinished but I'm okay with that.

@Linkforce : Maaaybe. =P but with school coming, I doubt I'll have much time to do even stuff for myself.

@ everyone else: thanks for the feedback!

I took your advice Muraiko and I've started coloring in black lines and experimenting with body shapes. Here's a new Samson for example.

His shirt and pants needs some more work.

Alright Dren, got some poses for ya if you want the practice:

Here's what you can take a shot at:
1. Facing right (or left) leaning forward as if she's yelling at someone from far away, arms at her sides.
2. Fixing her hair
3. Dusting off her pants
4. Looking up (Facing any direction)
5. Bending down like she's picking something up from the ground

I think this should be more than enough to get some practice in and do a good deed as well :P

Here's some experimental Menu designs for a skill tree system. The idea is there will be 11 or so pages of skill trees like this that a player could access at any time and apply their "AP" to learn new skills or "upgrade" skills, such as "Multi-Target", which should be self-explanatory.

I know it's not very flashy, but I was going more for functionality first.

I have a couple of things though. First off, how do y'all fell about the new Samson design. I know it needs more contrast and darker colors.
