Title: Your video game quirks; Fess up
Post by: Communist_Gamer on February 01, 2015, 06:57:07 AM
Come on now, surely you all have a few.

I'm talking about those irrational eccentricities that you exhibit just as a general result of you being you.
I'm probably a little more neurotic than some, if not most.
I'm a purist for one, that may not sound too bad, but for example, I'm also a collector; When you collect you need to understand the difference between collecting and hoarding. Space, time and money are finite. I have a Genesis, SNES, NES, PSX, PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, N64, 3DO, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast and a few handhelds. That's a lot of space if you want to have three or so consoles plugged in at one time, especially with that fat@$$ of a CRT television set.
I was looking at repro-clone consoles, in particular, the Retron5 (http://www.stoneagegamer.com/retron5.html (http://www.stoneagegamer.com/retron5.html)). BUT, what I was EXPECTING was a multiplatform repro console that plays vintage games... Instead it's more like an entire emulator ported onto a console. It downloads the game inserted into the console to play and before running opens up an emulation window (to adjust settings, map buttons and load save states).
That f%^*ing pissed me off, so dodged it.

Another weird thing is that I always save my files on the third slot; The first RPG I ever beat was the GBC Dragon Warrior 1 which I had to save on the third slot since the others were taken. Since then, it's been a running tradition with me.

What about you guys? Any irrational gaming tendencies?

I grab all collectibles, even when they're unnecessary (getting health pickups while still at full health, collecting money when I'm at max cash, etc.), though this ties in with my real life OCD issues. It makes looting a pain in the *** in Diablo, Skyrim, etc. since I need to collect it all to sell later.

Other than that, I find myself quick saving too much. I try not to, but when it's there, it's hard to avoid.

The older I get, the less inclined I am to play games with heavy-dialogue. I find myself skipping more and more cut-scenes in games, even during the first time through.

I'm playing Bravely Default right now, and the cut-scenes bore me to tears. I appreciate the voice acting, but that just draws it out even longer, since I can read it at a much faster pace. That only lasts a little while though, because I realize that I honestly don't care at all and end up skipping the through the text anyways. If Bravely Default has an interesting story, it's yet to reveal itself even up to the third chapter. I forced myself to read all of the flavor text books in Bayonetta 2, and I'm happy I did. Honestly though, I typically can't be bothered.

Let's see.
I will save at least 1 of each item if there is a semi-infinite storage space. In diablo 2 for example I had all gems from chipped to perfect of each colour in the stash. And if I wanted to use one but didn't have another one laying around - I wouldn't use it. This also manifests in pokemon where I will collect all TMs but never use them since they will disappear. The only ones I use are thunderbolt, icebeam and flamethrower that you can buy with different currencies in the game.
In monster hunter I will save 1 of each weapon I get. Each time I hit a branch in the upgrade tree I have to go back and build a new one and upgrade it so I can have both paths present in my storage unit.
I also hoard useless but kinda cool items in games. Like in WoW where I kept all those silly/cool items for some reason (It paid of now though when there's transmorgification). I wouldn't ever use them again, but I still wanted them there.
Collecting items in games is also a bitch, Lego Lord of the Rings, Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda you name it. I will spend all those hours trying to reach max health or unlock that special world. Also, getting the highest possible rating in games. If there's a E>S rank I will try to get an S rank on everything. Same goes with difficulties. If there's a higher difficulty I will start out on it. Mostly becuase I tend to need the challenge these days but I can't consider a game being finished until I've played through it on the highest difficulty and collected everything.

What else, I would never trade in an old console to get a discount on a new one. Impossibility.

Remember that TMs don't disappear anymore, prpl. That fact made me very happy.

My quirk has got to be subconscious roleplaying: not holding down the run button when I'm in a palace or something, sitting down on benches and things to save and turn off the game, stuff like that.

This might be standard but in fire emblem I NEVER use the paladin you get at the beginning for a single fight, don't let any character die, force myself to get every little reward in each level and invariably fall in love with one weak redhead girl character and tailor all the game into getting her experience. Now that class changing is a thing I tend to turn my clerics into myrmidons, mercenaries and archers because they look so damn cool.

Oh, I just remembered another example of my hoarding. In Terraria I have at least 1 of each possible item in the game tucked inside a chest somewhere. Doesn't matter if its a useless crafting material, goldfishes, some cobalt wall tapestry or Nights bane. If it exists, I need to save it.

I always have to look up a way to get the true ending in games that have multiple endings.
I always have to have the 'strongest' end game party, usually sacrificing my early and mid game in order to have a more dominating end game.
In any game that I only intend to play through once but has content that is only unlocked on a ng+ run, I have someone else play the game first and use their save.

In games like Final Fantasy where you can reach level 99, I will beat the game at levels lower than 99 for the challenge but I have to go back and max out every character as a kind of "collectible save".
I don't play ROMs, I will go out and buy a game for a few hundred dollars to play it instead. Though I do use the playstation emulator and the original discs so that I can just play it on my PC monitor.
I feel the need to enter every room in a game to make sure there is absolutely no loot left.
Whenever given the choice between fighting and stealth I ALWAYS pick stealth.
When saving games I absolutely have to save it no less than 5 times to make sure it was saved, even though I know that once was enough.

I forgot to reply to Moose, but yes, making TMs act like HMs did in the old games was the best thing nintendo could've done. It's like adding the option to give bonus exp to characters in Fire emblem like games that you haven't been using so that you won't stick to the same characters throughout the entire game.

I will download roms without hesitation. But I want new games as physical copies rather than digital. Even though I knew that I could get Borderlands 2 for the same price on steam and in the store I still bought the game from the store. And this is even though you play the game in steam. You get it.

In Metal Gear solid I will always reset the game when I am detected. Regardless of how easy I can get away from the troops or end the alarm I will still reset the game. I think it's a result of making that Big boss run.

I will also do immensely stupid things to collect alternative outfits for characters I won't even play. This is kinda annoying when most outfits are limited to DLC. I mean look at the DLC for Dead or Alive 5 on psn. Luckily I've beaten my urge to buy every stupid thing they release as DLC for games, that **** would eat my wallet, and kinda make me question my own motives...

I'm the exact opposite. I read everything. Even useless junk. When I played through Metroid Prime I went looking for every bit of chozo lore I could find and logged all the monster info and text logs.

In RPGs, I always focus all power-ups, stat-ups, high end equipment, and what-not on the main character. I like to overpower one character. I don't ignore the other characters, I just
give priority and all the bonus stuff to one character.

Also, in RPGs I tend focus on one stat, typically dexterity. Dexterity usually dictates attack speed, hit-rate, and in some games damage, and critical rate. That's pretty game breaking. I totally destroyed a few games this way, like Demon Souls.

I'm a purist for one, that may not sound too bad, but for example, I'm also a collector;

This for sure. I'm also a collector , and it hurts so much when I see how cheap games are on Steam when I think "Oh, but I really want to have that game on the box." I also prefer playing the game on the original console, and playing entire series from the start or not at all. (Though, I've been able to get myself to get into newer titles when older titles are impossible or hard to get).

I grab all collectibles, even when they're unnecessary

I've managed to stop doing this in most games. I do still tend to try to collect them, but I've weighed the time to use and if there's a lack of use I don't collect it anymore.

My quirk has got to be subconscious roleplaying

don't let any character die

Also these, though again not all the time and it really depends on the game. But a good roleplaying game, sure, why not take it easy and walk? Moose, I think you'd love to play Metro 2033. The game has a hidden roleplay reward system, in which you need to follow what the characters are saying to unlock the good ending.

I feel the need to enter every room in a game to make sure there is absolutely no loot left.
Whenever given the choice between fighting and stealth I ALWAYS pick stealth.
When saving games I absolutely have to save it no less than 5 times to make sure it was saved, even though I know that once was enough.

Got to find that loot and goddamn I'm also a scared saver. Need to save it, save it again, and just another time just to be sure. Unless I was distracted, in which case I wasn't sure I saved so I save it again. And I try to pick stealth most of the times, even restarting the game to redo it if I broke from stealth. I do like to mix it up at times though.

I'm the exact opposite. I read everything. Even useless junk.

I read a lot more in the games as well. I can't stand skipping a part of the story or backstory.
