What I could also do is sorta an idea from FF2, even tho I didnt really like it, but basically the only way to gain stronger magic is by using it a certain amount of times rather than just leveling up. Same with white magic. If you want to heal deadlier ailments, you need to use Panacea a lot rather than using items to heal. However, white magic would require more uses because it can be used outside of battle.
Kyro being the green mage sort of, he can learn his skills by... hmm... I'll make them available at shops lol. and Vash will be the normal level up.
As for the most powerful skills, they will remain via sidequest. If u have any ideas, just throw them at this topic!

As for that Volcano place you saw, there's more to than just cooling the lava. When you get deep enough after the dungeon introduces you how to navigate it, due to the heat, you'll have a time limit to complete it. Time limit can be increased via Cooling Statues which will reset the time to let's say 25 min. But in order to use these statues, you need Water Cores which can be found within the dungeon. This is a close to the end of the game dungeon so things get a lil nuts haha.
And when you cool the lava, that also has a certain time limit (monster encounters disabled). Failure to reach the safety point will result in simulated damage bring everyone's health and EP to 1. You cannot exit the dungeon until it's completion. Also EXP is not available due to the fact that there are 4 dungeons that you can do in any order.

Well, I am an avid supporter of not using the DBS, so yeah... no opinion on the change in skill development. Personally, such things as upgrading skills based on the number of times they are used and etc is much easier to do in a CBS.

I tried to see how I would do the skill leveling, but I couldn't find a way so I might just do it this way.
Purchase skills at a shop. Available only to help moving on easier, but if not purchased, it is still possible to move on. Also with them being sale items, the glitch of getting powerful skills too early or maybe even late will negate.
So I'll make it so that it's possible to purchase the necessary skills you will most likely NEED along with others if you have spare cash. Example. You really only need Freeze II skills, but since you have extra money, why not get Burn II or Shock II? OR I could make some skills reward items for things you do around a town or something. Lots you can do haha

That's ok, but I like Lucas' thinking ths time around. Make it so that it's not just the same spell but stronger. Make it so the spell becomes something that makes sense as being stronger. Ignite becomes Fireball, Fireball becomes Wall of Flames, etc.

To be honest, I think that naming scheme sounds pretty good. You don't have to completely avoid repeating prefixes/suffixes/terms.

Friegamin (low fire)
Friegamid (mid fire)
Friegamax (high fire)
Wyfriegamax (wide area of effect high fire)
I like those kinda names for spells in games
In fact, I like my example so much I might use it in my own stuff.

At first I thought you simply spelled fire wrong. But then the pattern continued.
Min mid max are kinda catchy suffixes though. Sure beats the FF/KH version of adding an A and then AGA at the end. And in later games AJA.
I remember playing PSO for the first time and getting in contact with their Force names. Foie(fire), barta(ice), zonde(thunder), And then the prefixes Gi and Ra for the higher spells. But that game had some interesting naming like with the potions called Monofluids, Diofluids and trifluids.
Only problem with skill names is that they can sound kinda corny. But it's an rpg so things are kinda supposed to sound corny. But then again, I'm not sure english speakers find stuff like that corny. All I know is that any game translated to swedish sounds so silly that you can't take the skills and items seriously.

Certainly sounds corny to me. But not half as much as when translated to Portuguese.
Thankfully most games are never translated.
But there's like... anime. Now, things like Dragonball have the decency of keeping the Japanese names, which sound really great, especially if you count the fact that kids have no bloody idea what it means (Say what you will, Rogafufuken beats the **** out of Wolf Fang Fist), but then there's like... Pokémon. And good lord, those attack names are AWFUL when translated to Portuguese.
That said, I like RPGs that aren't corny. Too much of that can ruin a game.
ps:
Tornado Flame
is the best technique name ever.

Burn I, Burn II, Burn III, Burn Mo' IV
That'll show 'em.
