Title: Map Contest: Winter Time.
Post by: Meiscool-2 on December 23, 2006, 03:02:29 AM
THIS CONTEST IS CLOSED. WINNER: Drenin

This is a series of contests I'm going to start to try to bring some life to the forum.

Rules: Using the chipset above, create the best possible map that you can. You can only use the chipset, an NO events unless told otherwise. Any exceptions will be noted below. Also, no sprites should be on the map. If you don't know how to hide your hero sprite, then don't worry about it, it's not that big of a deal.

Exceptions: You may use the event code -> Weather -> Snow.
You may use an overlay if you wish.

This contest will go for five days, or untill we have enough entries. Winners of the contest will recieve random things from me, or recieve nothing. This contest, as it is the first contest and a test to see if people will actually enter these contests or not, will have no reward for the winner. These contests will be judged by me, and IF ANYONE ELSE WISHES TO BE A JUDGE WITH ME, PM ME. Only offer to be a judge if you seriously think that you can be here when needed and do your job. Anyone can enter the contest, judges as well, though judges can't win prizes. Prizes can consist of:
My 'special' resources that I use to map with and havn't shared with the public yet.
My special chipset edits.
And perhaps become a beta testor for my game.

To start things off, I will post my map. Remember, because I'm a judge, my map won't be in the voting. But, to be festive, I wanted to make one anyways :p

But yea this is what I got from the last shot I took, already edited it some afterwards. Came with a cool idea for a series of mini games or w/e because of it...

Hey, thanks guys. Robotam, I think I see what you were trying to do. If you want to fix up what you think you did wrong, you can. I didn't post any rules as to how many times you can post a map, so feel free to do what ya want. I really love the tree-tops in the upper right. I think I might do that one a couple of my maps now.

Glitch, nice :smoke: I like the lowerleft for some reason. Looks like there was water there, but not enough to freeze over and make ice.

Nah, it's fine. If the contest is a success I'll have plenty of other chances to impress. ;)

Come on, peeps. Give the man some entries!

Alright, the contest is closed now.

My judges and I will post our reviews and thoughts by the end of the week. Because this is the first contest, I'll allow late entries, but I doubt any will come.

Thankyou to all of you that have entered and gave support to the life of charas :D

Okay...Meiscool has had some compy troubles, so he hasn't responded yet.

Heres my judging and is by no means the final judgement, so to speak.

Drens = win
Archem = Runner up.

Kay what I though of each map...

Krynth: Too open, stuff was very square, and it lacked a lot of upper layer detailing.

Robotam: Stuff was like good, but the ice chips didn't really fit and the trees were a good idea, but they kinda looked like snow. Not a bad map, just the chips kinda didn't fit with the idea.

Glitch: Nice arrangement of stuff, I like this map, but it's kinda simple. I wouldn't mind this map at all in a game, way better then most maps in games I've played.

ZKX: Not bad, but the cliffs look kinda random, especially the one in the upper-right. It's the tallest cliff, but it has no snow on it, and usually the higher the cliff, the more snow. Not bad, though.

Dren: Nice blend of terrain, and I like the detail. No real complaints except in a real game it would be kinda hard to see where you wanna go, because there's no apparent path. I say this wins.

Archem: Nice, but everything looks scrunched up together. We have a clump of trees to the left, and a clump of cliffs to the right. I say this goes for second.

lack of detail...ay it does, idk when it comes to detail things seem crowded to me excpecially in-game, good to know what I need to improve on though

Well, I was up in the mountains when I made that. I had noticed that snow was randomly melted but still in tact in random places with no relevance to sun, so I tried to emulate it... to no avail.

Damn, really? I wouldn't have expected to be mentioned in even so much as the top three.

Alright guys, sorry it took me so long. I just lost a lot of my RPG Maker stuff, including maps, so I didn't feel like looking at screenshots.

Dren: Great work. I agree with Linkizcool and give you the win. You used everything I allowed you to (chipset, overlay, and snow) and make it all work wonderfully. Plenty to look at, plenty to love, and just enough open space. Don't know what else to say other than 'good job!'.

Archem: I'm personally not as pleased with this map as my izcool friend is. I think the trees in the left and the tree tops at the top are misplaced. I also think that some of your elevations don't line up real well, and that you left a lot of the space with the plain-white tile. I do like the center, as you did the elevating well on that part. I also like the frozen water. You used square tiles and curved tiles, which I like to see.

Krynth: I don't know why, but everything that you host, all I see is a black box. Sorry, but I can't rate your map, seeing as I can't see it :p

Robotam: I love what you did with the treetops and the mountain sides. Were it not for the left side of the screen with the broken ice and water, you would've won in my opinion. However, because the left part of the screen sorta ruined the rest of it, you earned second place.

ZKX: It had a nice, natural sort of feel. However, it left a lot of open space. If you had filled that space with objects or small mounds of different tiles, it would've looked a lot nicer.

Glitch: I don't know if you saved it as a JPEG first or if you used a really blury overlay, but I like that part of the map. Its a pretty open map that would look good in a game, but as far as a competition goes, its just not detailed enough.

The victor of this contest is Drenin, and the two runner ups are Robotam and Archem. Great job guys, and I hope you enter the next contest.

Well, as I've told you, I aim for a more natural and believable map, so as long as I did that I'm fine.

Well, I'm pleased just by hearing positive comments. I'm my biggest critic, so I think everything of mines is of poor quality, so positive feedback means a lot to me, even if it's not a lot.

If that's true then why isn't there snow on that cliff with the ladder? :p
