Title: The Ghosts of Heart Lake
Post by: drenrin2120 on April 30, 2006, 01:52:20 AM
So here it is, the beginning of the book The Ghosts of Heart Lake. I'll post Chapters here as I go along with the story. The plot is about 90% set in stone, so the possibility of earlier chapters being changed are slim to none. Now, one question I'm sure some of you are wondering. Is it anything like the Game Project? The answer is, not exactly. There are differences and the production is expected to be a lot faster. Well, I'll be giving you guys enoguh to read, so I'll stop talking and show you the first release of this project. The Introduction, some books have an introduction, this one does, too.

~Introduction~

Imagine,
With the universe as vast as it is…
Just imagine the possibilities,
The secrets

As the snow was falling, the wind was blowing. And as slight as it was, the breeze rustled the trees, and the pines would seem to move. The growth above rattled quietly and dropped small loads of fluffy white onto the ground. The forest was still. Through the middle of it all ran a canyon with a drop that was sheer vertical. There was about ten to twenty feet of open space and small shrubbery before the gap, which was at least fifty feet across in itself.
Along the edge of the cliff stood a being, or was it human? It definitely possessed features that would suggest so. But there was one obvious distinction, white feathery wings, which seemed a little dirtied in some spots but still glistened a beautifully clean white. The owner of the wings was tall with long dark hair that reflected a bit of blue. There he stood, his wings casting a silhouette of white against the dark hole running across the ground. He opened his mouth, and for a while, no sound was heard. Nothing. Not even a nearby tree dropping more powder to the ground. Even the wind had stopped, as if anxiously awaiting the figure at the edge of the canyon to make a move.
It’s eyes opened, a piercing blue, and it spoke, “I can feel it. I’m so close…”
It was then the wind came running from the south, an angry roar that broke the silence and sent unsettled snow flying. The trees shook with a ferociousness that would scare any normal person. But there he stood in defiance, unmoving against the relentless wind. Above the din, a voice from behind caught his attention. It was gentle and sweet, almost pleading.
“Brother… Dear brother… I have been searching for you for days.” and he turned away from the edge and the other side of the canyon to face the beauty that was his sister. His heart broke inside of him.
“What are you doing here?” He said, allowing more surprise in his voice to show than he wanted.
“I’ve been looking for you, but of all places… Why here, Bemnonth? Why? Why would you come back here? The council will not be pleased. They will banish you for this!” Her voice was nearly breaking.
“Atherial,” Bemnonth said, “I have a plan. I will not fail! You can come with me, we’ll do this together! We’ll start a new age of rule, all over the-”
“Bemnonth! Don’t’ be an idiot!” And she raised her hands to the sky, a great shuddering came to be, and the earth jolted for a second. Her wings, which were as her brother‘s, opened meaningfully. “You may be my brother, but I will do what I must to stop you from letting such human emotions take over and ruin you and those I love!” Atherial’s kind face became a portrait of anger and sadness.
Bemnonth’s eyes flashed. He knew there was no way around this. He spread his wings to their full extent and became an intimidating beast ready for battle. “Turn around, Atherial, turn around and forget you ever saw me. Speak nothing of this to the elders or else…”
“Or else what?” Atherial shot back. “You disgust me, brother. They will ban you for such treason, just as they did Lucifer!”
Bemnonth snapped, “I am nothing like him! I only want freedom!”
     “You want power!”
“You will not stand in my way, if you do, you will pay the consequences!”
It was a stand off of unworldly proportion. The wind was stirring violently, eyes became locked and all ideals shared by siblings were lost. Snow churned like an ocean of rage. The sky was clouded and seemed to be waiting for the climax of it all.
     “Never!” Atherial shrieked!
Bemnonth faltered for a second, was he really about to do this? But in the next instant, all thoughts and emotions were thrown away. She would tell all the council and the elders what he is doing! She might even try to subdue him! This can not happen. “So be it! I’ve come too far to let even you stand in my way!”
And with a mighty burst of light he charged headlong into his sister, she was caught off guarded, half expecting he would give up. He beat her to the ground, overtaking her purely with his strength. He knew this would not be enough though. You can not kill the immortal, but she could also not be allowed to go back to the council and elders. He realized and accepted what he must do.
She was staring at him in shock as he firmly grabbed onto each of her wings. Atherial’s eyes filled with fear, “My brother!” Was all she said before he viciously tore them from her shoulders. The result was a ripping scream produce from deep within her throat, it cut away at Bemnonth’s ears. It was filled with agony and disbelief. The kind of thing that would make a person cringe in fear while, at the same time, feel a sense of loss so powerful, it could bring you to your knees in despair.
The blood stained wings of his sister turned the snow around her a sickening pink. She looked at him with tears in her eyes and a face that asked, “Why?” But he looked away and tossed the remains of her immortality into the snow in a shower of feathers. With his own wings took to the air. When he was high enough he looked back at his sister. From that height all he could really make out was the outline of red around her crippled body. He raised his hand to her as a single tear breached his eye and slid across his dismal face. There was no going back now, he was about to do one more unforgivable action. And so, with a shout he let go a bolt of energy which shot down like a missile at his helpless and now evanescent sister. She closed her eyes and let fate take her hand as the impact of the magic shook the ground with a rumble and shattered the forest around her. Leaving nothing but a crater in the ground and the random cascade of white, pink and red blotted feathers.
