Title: I Feel Sick..
Post by: aboutasoandthis on October 24, 2007, 12:53:53 AM
Yep another Livejournal thread.

So I'm sitting down on the computer working on my game when I get this phone call. It was a woman from a University calling to say that I have a $6000 dollar a year scholarship if I apply for their school. It's in the middle of New York. The total cost for the University comes to $29,050, so a $24,000 scholarship is nice.

After looking the school up, it turns out that it is a Christian University. Now, I have nothing against that. I'm a Christian myself. It's just that this school is primarily Republican, and heavily based in evangelism.

They are a predominately white school with little as far as diversity goes. They say that they accept any religious indoctrination, but they make you sign a statement that says you accept Jesus Christ as your savior. When I said that they are based in New York, I meant it. They're based in the Empire State Building. They don't really have a course selection. They only focus on Philosophy and Economics, focusing on getting Christian students into politics. They're also the quintessential Jock school, with A LOT of Gyms and sports teams.

I'm happy that I got a scholarship in the first place. I'm just not sure that this is for me. I was actually thinking about going into the Air Force, specializing in Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Heating. I would use that experience and credit to go to a school to study architecture. This is only if I don't get a scholarship to an architecture college. At least I know now that I'm capable of getting a scholarship. My resume isn't too great. I just have to wait for the calls.

On one end this is awesome. On the other it feels weird. What are your thoughts?

And what are/were your plans after high school?

wtf  is that **** school? I'm pretty mcuh done my applications. I'm a National Merit Semifinalist and most likely will end up at least a finalist, and a lot of schools have been recruiting me for full scholarships and stuff (texas at Dallas, etc.,) but no where I really wanna go. I'm probably gonna end up at Temple University.

Many people that go to school strictly because they can or someone wants them to end up unhappy. Not everyone, just many.

Really, you should focus on what you want to do and work your hardest to get there.

If you take a class for something you don't want to do you'll probably end up wasting time and money (unless, of course it's a full scholarship).

As for me, I've worked as a dishwasher 45-60 hours a week for the first year and a half I've been out of school; simply because I haven't had another choice.

I'm about to start a job as an insurance agent though. I'm going to Seattle in less than a week to start training and what-not. It's pretty prestigious I guess. Go figure.

I wouldn't go. From what you've said, it seems like they have their interests in mind more than their students'.

accept Jesus Christ as your savior
so if you have a god thats not do with
Jesus Christ as your savior god
you can not go to that school f..k that
a school,s for any needing help
like me and not to have to hear god or jesus
24.7 all the time you go mad
i love jesus you have to love him
to to be saved ok you have to ask to be saved
and all that but i look at it if god and jesus
are so good where are they when killing's
and all that going on
in the world today having a cup of tea
it make's you think is there a god?

The ways of Gods are unpredictable, they might want people to die you know? Mankind is increasing to fast and for every person born, there has to be more food and items to make him/her satisfied. This results in killing of animals.
Killing humans would also solve the greenhouse effect... Climate problem good bye.

As for the school: From a religous vision, what can give you better education but the servants of God? They will do what is best for you so that you can reach out for the heaven and also make a living. After all, they are willing to pay parts of it for you.

From a personal view, don't go... You can find something better than that. Something that will appeal to your taste better. Don't let anyone control your life, not even priests.

From a Swedish view, I don't your university... How come the dumwitted football players get in for free while the smarter peopl ehave to pay up? Aren't your university made to give you further training and education? At least that's what ours are for... And the people with high grades and some references from a teacher are the ones who gets invited for a disscount...

Oh well...

Wow, that's gotta be tough, most people would kill for any kind of money for college.   But as others said, they don't seemed as concerned with your education as their are with their own political agenda.

I'm only a sophomore,  but I want to go to Indiana University of Pennsylvania.  They have a great music program, and their marching band is sweet.  I saw them at chapters last year.

Don't go. A school that's $29k for four years out of state? I doubt it's credibility based on that and the school's focus.

As for my plans, I'm currently a freshman at Florida Tech majoring in Computer Science. I work for the CS Department as a web developer, too. I'll be taking this summer off, but the summer after my sophomore year I'm going to begin looking for internships - Microsoft, Google, Harris, IBM, EA, etc all recruit here are most students looking for at least an interview will get one.

Definitely. the cheapest reputable school around here is roughly 48k for 4 years.

Thanks. I feel much better about this now, and I've definitely decided not to go.

The 29,050 comes from housing if you want a fancy apartment. They actually have dorms that cut the cost to 20,000, so I think 24,000 is a full ride. I'm not sure if this is counting food and ameneties.

I've decided not to go. I've already talked to both of my parents about this. Even though we're a religiously inclined family (Dad's family owns a church), they have the same thoughts as you do. They would rather see me pursue something that I want to do.

You'd be surprised at how smart some Football players are. Here you have to maintain at least a B average and a 3.5 GPA. Sure it prevents the best players from playing, but if you still have a great team that means something. Hell a lot of hardcore closet Geeks are the Football stars. Our team made the playoffs.

I'll admit though, you can probably pick up some guys off the street and kick their asses. It happened when they tried to play an all black high school. They got killed.

I'll give you this too. Imo, our Universities aren't neccisarily concerned with education. They're more concerned with work ethic. If you can keep your place on a team and maintain your grades, that's a signal to a lot of employers. Our colleges are most concerned with getting people a steady job and settling down.

Edit: I'm actually getting a lot of calls from schools and heavy encouragement to apply to them. This is just the first time where I was flat out told that I got a scholarship, and maybe a full ride.

Aboutaso, you'd be surprised as well. I know a lot of the football guys from my school, and I wonder how they have Bs. When you mispronounce the word "about" theres a problem.

Anyone in or past the 11th grade in an American school can tell you about the calls and the mail. Starting your Junior year everyone and their brother wants you to go to their college. The mail I got from my Junior year until after graduation from schools wanting to recruit me probably weighs more than myself (I'm about 180, gotta love the Freshman 15). Some will make more lucrative offers if you are an academic achiever, others may give offers based on sports involvement or whatever.

You can mostly ignore the mail you get except to mark down a few names. Do your research - sure, DeVry sends out a lot of mail and touts how amazing their game development program is. But it's a load of crap - 1. It's a game development program (99% of all game development college programs are aimed at getting gullible kids who like videogames to pay money for substandard teaching), and 2. DeVry SUCKS ***. I have testimonials and evidence to support this.

Also, so far my college has focused on both education and career development, especially networking. I just got the impression from Aboutso's post that he was saying our colleges focus on making students do work more than teaching them well, which isn't the case in my experience. :P

If it's any consolation, I haven't gotten anything from DeVry... o,o

They're actually decent schools like Miami and Rensselaer. I've been getting a few things from some nice schools. Mostly University of Illinois, Clemson, and Tulane. I don't expect to get into those schools yet though.

full agreement. At first I didn't throw all the mail out, and filled about 5 shoe boxes before i was just like... **** it. I'm at the point where schools are literally throwing money at me, so it really narrows the selection process down.

Oh yeah. DeVry, etc... not worth their weight in gold plated ****

Don't even consider it, GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE!!!

As for me, I am going to The University of Kansas next year (Gag, Kansas that is, not the university.) for as of now pre-law, then if I pass the LSAT, Law at the same place.

That could easily change though, but I do plan to stick with it for as long as possible.
