Title: What special twist do you like to see in RPGs?
Post by: wildguy3922 on June 09, 2005, 01:41:49 AM
Something that you would actually enjoy in an rpg story and isn't cliche.

What I mean in twist, for instance:
1. The main character's enemy is actually his father.
2. The character finds out he's not human.
3. A specific person dies that was important.
4. An unexpected event happens.

I like the idea when your playing an rpg and its based off its own story, but an event happens that was totally unexpected and it actually made sense, BUT, not too ridiculous, lol.

If you've ever seen or read dreamcatcher by Stephen King, that's an example. BUT, his was a little bit ridiculous, lol.

You are on a journey to save the world, but instead, you are killing it.

After killing the bad guy, they learn that the bad guy actually had a reason to be doing what he was doing, and that the heroes were actually the bad guys.

"You bastard, Cloud! I was going to become a God, and then save everyone on the planet. Now instead it's just going to explode."
"Whooops."

John Travolta is a secret character. He carries various guns and can see an ability that morphs him inot Vincent Vega (Pulp Fiction)

If the RPG is very unpredictable and you can run fast instead of taking hours from reaching one part of the world map to the other but make it in seconds!

The hero is actually a deceiver and you must take the heroine and kill the former hero. Unfortunately, both die in the process.

You can't really have a 'favourite story twist', since if a story twist's any good it'll only have been used in one game.

Maybe an idea to make a RPG about Hamlet?

* You found out one of your best character is in fact a traitor/natural enemy (like when you mission is to destroy all the dragons, and you find your best friend is half-dragoon) (Yes, Konami, I'm talking to you, you too, Square, you too....)
Usually theres a lot of short scenes showing this friend, but he/she is aways in the dark, so you don't know who is it.

* After fighting and killing a man who tries to take over the world, [GLOW]YOUR KING[/GLOW] takes over the world. Killing you in the process. Painfully.

* In the end of the game, the character can be either good, or evil, depending of the choises you made. (BoF IV)
And strangely enough, if you're evil, its like three hundred of billions of times easier to beat the last boss. Oh, wait, now YOU'RE the last boss.

You kill the guy you've always thought was the bad guy, but his apprentice becomes the bad guy, and it's not at the end of the game either.
