Title: A spriters tutorial
Post by: Starduster on May 30, 2005, 10:20:37 PM
So...you wanna sprite huh? Who can blame you? Its an interesting thing to do!

Some of the benefits that alot of people don't realize is that creating all your own sprites for your game is something alot of people will respect and set your games aside from all the others!

So first things first. Open up a picture editing program. I personally use paint because its the easiest and straight forward of all of them.

I've posted the steps in a picture at the bottom each picture will correspond with each number so lets keep glancing from tutorial to picture okay? Now then:

1. Start off with a simple base. Don't worry about shading yet a simple skin color and outline will do just fine. In this tutorial I'm using a base slightly bigger than the rtp.

2. Lets put in a simple alfit, still not worrying about shading or adding hair. Start adding in your eyes at this point.

3. Start to shade when i shade you will notice that this makes all the difference and makes it stand out from step 2. I added an example of shanding i use. Note that this type of shading wont be natural for EVERYTHING you use. This is just a basic one.

4. Yeah now for the fun part. Hair styles set each character apart from each other, giving the all unique styles and sometimes even a hint of their personalities. Start the base and shade just like the clothing.

Yay you've made your very first character congrats!!! Try out different styles to see what you like best, tweak your images until you think they are indeed unique and good enough.

EXTRA

5. Major characters usually have lots of different things about their clothing that you can convey. Since this one is a white mage and has a hood i decided to put the hood up!

Note: Next tutorial: movement and poses.
