RPG Maker is obviously not the only game making system. I wanted to link to a few other game makers (2, specifically, that I've used extensively) out there that featured their own programming languages, offering more freedom, or at least a good way to learn programming concept without having to mess with dirty stuff like moving around or displaying graphics.
BYOND (http://byond.com/) is a great program, specifically because it does what few have ever done - let's the average person get a chance at making an online game. It's coding language, DM, was really helpful to me for learning and getting down some of the more complicated things, but it's definately worth checking out regardless of your skill level.
RPG Toolkit (http://www.toolkitzone.com/) is another great program with it's own coding language (in this case, RPGCode). RPG Toolkit has, on their website, sprite packs for it that contain tiles from everything you could think of, including RPG Maker. This (http://www.toolkitzone.com/games.php?image=4223) and this (http://www.toolkitzone.com/games.php?image=2593) are great examples of how far people have gone with the Toolkit.
Hopefully this will help some of you afraid to jump into real programming to give it a try.

there is also:
Game Maker (http://gamemaker.nl/)
Realm Crafter (http://www.realmcrafter.com/)

BYOND and RPG toolkit are the ones I'm most interested in. realm crafter looks like it would take up TREMENDOUS space on a computer, and game maker, I've already tried and it sucked. Most likely I'll finish my projects on 2k3 and then move on to try out REAL projects on toolkit and BYOND.
I have school right now though so I'll check it out later today.
