Title: Terraria
Post by: zuhane on May 26, 2011, 09:28:46 PM
Anyone played this gem yet? My first thought was MINECRAFT RIPOFF! I thought
I'd stay away from the crafty little thing. Anyway, I was just browsing IGN when- Holy crap!
Terraria got 9.0!

I downloaded the game anyway. Wow! Just wow! It's pretty similar to MC in a lot of aspects, but
that's not necessarily a bad thing. That's like a game being similar to HL2 or Zelda. The fundamental
difference being the combat. It feels like Castlevania mixed with Minecraft, which sounds too good to
be true, but isn't. The combat and mobility feel much more polished than MC. You unlock varieties of weapon
types of different speeds and strengths, upgrade character stats and learn spells. What's even better is that you
can advance through the ages and start unlocking hookshots, guns and lasers.

This game is well worth the £5.99 price tag. I mean, really, what's that? It's the equivalent of 2 less drinks on
a night out. I've yet to see how much replay value I can squeeze out of this, but at the moment, this is much more
fun than MC!

Yes, great game. $10 was a great price for this fantastic game. It has building and mining and crafting, so yeah, it's like Minecraft. The combat, exploration, and awesome loot you can find really set it apart, though. It's similar in some ways, but totally different in enough ways to make it worth buying. I've been playing it with friends, and it's the best time-killer out there.

This is a game I would try, had I the money to do so.

Also, drinks sure are expensive in the UK.

I'll just stick with Minecraft. I generally don't care for the combat anyways.

I don't like the fact that the player graphics looked like they came from here (metaphorically speaking).
Reminds me of my first Game Maker project.
Which used RPGM graphics in a platformer.

It sucked.

I'd be fully willing to buy it when I'm not ****-*** broke, though.

They literally replaced all the character sprites at the last minute because up until release they were using shitty FF4 edits, and they didn't want to get sued. They should really have hired a pixel artist, the current graphics blow all of the dicks.

It's insanely fun with voice chat and a few friends online. I bought it yesterday and played it for 7 hours
until 4am. I have an exam coming up. I can see where this is going >.<

I seriously want the rocket boots!!

I have Double Jump, and that's it. I'm such a pussy when it comes to exploring too far from my house. I'm too afraid to lose all my money when I inevitably die. I would keep it in a chest, but since I can't find iron ore without venturing too far off, my chests tend to be few and filled with important goodies that I can't have clogging up my inventory.

Archem, you must add me on Steam (tigga17) and we'll destroy everything proper good! Just kitted my
guy out with bronze/silver armour and a silver bow. I want some futuristic weapons, though. Speaking
of going far out, I reached that Netherworld area or whatever it's called and a giant worm killed me about 8 times
2 minutes from my spawn. I spent a good 30 minutes getting my coins back and running home!

Also, when the mod loader gets released I'll be making mods.

This is a lot less frightening than Minecraft, so I usually end up going out quite far. I've gotten a double-jump, super speed boots, a hookshot, quite a bit of gold and silver (bars, not coins), and tons of cash. Seriously, the only penalty for death is a loss of money, so I just store that **** in a piggybank and it's all good.

I still have no clue what I'm supposed to do with Mana.

Yeah, I found a book ages ago that teaches me Water Bolt or something. Never use it because I have nothing Mana-wise.

Collect dem stars, get 10, craft into mana container thing. You should find an asston of stars if you explore at night.
Title: Re: Terraria
Post by: zuhane on June 04, 2011, 10:50:45 AM
I have a few heart containers and mana ones if you want them. I'm pretty much maxed out, character-wise.
I want to get some sort of faction going soon where we fight for territory. Me strong!!!

Hahaha! Just noticed that a bot has made a thread about terrariums! I love how
they latch onto subjects and morph them into something that absolutely doesn't relate to
us in any way whatsoever.
Title: Re: Terraria
Post by: Archem on June 05, 2011, 12:52:23 AM
I only found 17 stars thus far, so my 20 Mana isn't worth ****. No health upgrades found as of yet, either.

Hey, someone should put up server info. Someone who runs a server. Not me.
Title: Re: Terraria

My friend does. Although the IP changes on every login. I don't know how servers work, but yeah.
If anyone's on Steam at the same time it's up, I'll be happy to donate all sorts of crap. The stuff you get in
the dungeon is Hella fun! :D

I can't imagine that you would have trouble running it. Get Steam (if you don't have it yet), buy the game (it's pretty cheap), play.

Well, you could also hope for someone to send you a gift copy.

Title: Re: Terraria

So within the span of a day I've gone from some doofus with a magic boomerang and silver armor to a doofus wearing shadow armor that makes me attack faster holding a ridiculous mace and has fought a giant eyeball, an army of goblins that raped half of his village, and 3 humongous evil worms.

It's pretty clear this isn't any old clone of Minecraft.

Yeah, I think that's the only section they maybe didn't do right. It's much harder to get gold armour than shadow armour
and obviously not worth the effort. I wanted to revel in my gold chainmail for a bit, but then I blinked and got full shadow
equipment!
Title: Re: Terraria
Post by: Cerebus on June 06, 2011, 07:42:38 AM
Uhm, I guess I should try this, eventually. When I get the money. Because I'm poor, right now.
It's good that combats seem to actually serve a purpose rather than being an annoyance like in MineCraft.
I mean, why would I want Creepers spawning in my arse while digging a tunnel when all it can give me is Gun Powder? And even the rest... Bone Meal, Silk, Feathers... not worth the annoyance.

Yes, this game is amazing.
Generally me an Lucas play on a server that I run occasionally, although I know Lucas has his own world. In case anyone else wants to pop in and see my awful tower building/huge mines, the IP address is 71.227.228.205
Talk to me on Steam to let me know that you want to jump in, though, that way I can boot the server up.

So.
1.1 is awesome.

Kinda old news by now, but still.

I made a fully automatic obsidian generator (http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/631859135453012537/519C4161338300FF8E37EABD174B7F805305DE1B/), due to the magic of pumps.
Flip three switches and then the tanks refill in a couple of minutes.

Title: Re: Terraria

It definitely isn't Battletoads, or Ninja Gaiden levels of insanity.
It is pretty difficult, though, if you don't know what you're doing, or, say, get ganged up on by a bunch of skeletons in a hellevator.
Title: Re: Terraria

So, I play this too. Picked it up when it was $2.50 Wearing meteor armor and mostly using an aqua scepter and free space lazer. Fun game. Started slow as hell, but really took off once I started fighting bosses and was worried less about any given skeleton smashing my copper-plated ***.

And WTF @ the robe being basically Sai'Kar's robe. That and the golden crown let me make a near perfect SaiKar character. Tis weird.

What sucks is that I do have the money. I just don't have the credit card. I'm sad...

I guess I could, but... I'm not too fond with the idea of asking to use her credit card. Yes, I know, I'm weird.

Also, she says hi. And yes, she should come back more.

And Archem, what exactly do you mean by "hit us"? Like... "Hey, guys, want to buy me this game? Expect nothing in return, though, because I lack a credit card, which is why I'm asking you right now!" ? Because... well yeah, that's still pretty awkward. In fact, even more than asking a friend or Natako.

I really need a credit card... kinda sucks being unable to buy a $5 thing.
Title: Re: Terraria

Title: Re: Terraria
Post by: Cerebus on December 22, 2011, 05:47:01 AM
...well I'll be honest, that'd be pretty sweet. Seems like a fun game to play.
And even if the game is only $5 right now, it's still pretty much offering it to some stranger from Canada. Who speaks French. Bien sūr?

I need to go to bed right now, though. Work tomor... today.

We can check this tomorrow. Maybe I could find anyway to pay back, though it would mainly be by using pre-paid cards or something since it's pretty much the only possible way in my case.
I... well yeah, as you know from my last couple posts, lack a credit card and last time I tried mailing something... it never reached its destination. Which really sucks badly. First and last time I use it. It might not exactly be the post service's fault, but let's just say when you first try something and it doesn't work... well yeah.

Anyway, me go bed now. Me tired... finally.

I really need a credit card... kinda sucks being unable to buy a $5 thing.

You can't create a temporary E card thingy then? I don't have a credit card but I can create some sort of E-master card thing while logged in on my bank. I pick an amount transferred to this E-card and then choose when it's supposed to expire. They generate me some numbers and I enter those into the required fields for purchase. Stuff like Wii points or PSN credits or anything not in-country demands it so that's the way I go.

Cerb, I'm SaiKar on Steam. Contact me at some point before the 25th and I'll buy it for you. I have a fairly big shopping surplus burning a hole in my pocket and I'm going to either burn it on you or people that aren't you, so it might as well be you.
Title: Re: Terraria
Post by: Cerebus on December 22, 2011, 11:09:42 PM
That's pretty nice of you. Thanks a whole lot.
I must admit, though, that I rarely am on Steam... though perhaps I'll be there more often, who knows.
I wish I did have a big shopping surplus as well... I feel cheap being unable to offer anything.

I'll add you, then. And if anyone wants an absent friend... well you can add me.
I use Steam so often that I'm not even sure if you need my current username or my account name, so I'll give both:
My account name is "Cerebus_x01" and my current username is "Nightmares..." (Spooky, I know).

And Prpl_Mage, I guess I could check for those. However, I still need a real credit card. After all... gotta start having a credit name at some point. Or something. Yeah...

You guys are pretty generous. And pretty.

Vacations start tomorrow, so I'll have plenty of free time to play!

Edit: Nevermind that. Natako found out I wanted that game and offered to buy it for me. Yay!
You're still generous and I still love you in a non-gay way, though!

But well, if you want an absent friend, feel free to add me. If not? Well don't! Or you still can. All depends on what you want, really.

If I really get into Terraria, then I'll probably be Online quite often, though.

But yeah, all's good!

This part just sort of melted.

Then a cousin and I replaced it by the same part from an old computer and when we turned it on smoke started coming out and we unplugged it before the new (old) one melted too. Donno what's causing it, but we're gonna have to call someone who can fix it, but that will cost money which we don't have.

just soloed the destroyer
**** yeah

I was using Warrior Adamantite, with one warding accessory (a cross), a warrior badge, Bowl of Soup/Ironskin Potion/Thorns Potion/Regeneration Potion. Main weapon was Dao of Pow, although the Adamantite Glaive came in handy some of the time.

It also ended up killing every single one of my NPCs.
Title: Re: Terraria
Post by: Cerebus on January 05, 2012, 01:13:06 AM
I actually soloed all Hardmode boss, 2-3 times each. Got full Hallowed, got Excalibur (with Legendary), Megashark (with Unreal (this one costed me a lot to get)) and the Hamdrax... with Godly, just for the Hell of it. Working toward getting the Bell (need Pixie Dust and Souls of Light) and then perhaps I'll also get the Hallowed repeater.
You know what really helps? Heart statues. If you can get some, you'll be in business. I personally have 3. Guess I got a bit lucky.

The Destroyer definitely is the easiest for melee and I actually consider the Twins harder than Skeletron Prime.
I lacked ammos and had to finish him off melee the first time I tried killing him. No way I could have done this with the Twins.

If you need help or just want to have fun killing those, we can try doing it again; we won't fail this time!
I could bring my Heart Statues since they really do help, though being two, we might not need them.
Title: Re: Terraria
Post by: Archem on January 05, 2012, 01:20:09 AM
I still think the Destroyer is the hardest. I can't solo any of the fuckers.

ed: Also, just did so again.
I have a full set of Light Discs and a stock Excalibur.
The Light Discs make the single most annoying sound when you fire them off in a closed space.

He must've played with friends who gave him endgame equipment. Anybody with a little bit of skill can tear through the game with that stuff on.
Title: Re: Terraria
Post by: Cerebus on January 05, 2012, 11:39:59 AM
Actually, no, I don't like being given stuff. Only thing I was given were the Demon Wings, by fruckert.
My vacations started pretty much when I've got this game, so I had plenty of time.

It went this way:
First of all, I built myself the Adamantite Set, both with Helm and Mask... or whatever.
Got my Phasesaber and Demon Scythes spells and then I was ready to go:
Killed Destroyer, built Excalibur, killed Destroyer again, built Megashark, killed Skeletron Prime, killed the Twins, built the Hallowed set with Helm, killed the Twins again, built the Hallowed Mask. Then I killed the necessary bosses to get the Hamdrax and am now working toward getting the Bell, though I now just need some Souls of Light.
Somewhere in between the bosses and all, I reforged Excalibur (which only took 2-3 attempts before Legendary (I got lucky)) and Megashark (which took me a couple attempts to get Unreal (didn't get as lucky...)).

Heart Statues are very helpful when fighting bosses. I have 3, so I could get 60 Health every 10 seconds. Whenever I was in real danger and already drank a potion, I'd just run around my short skybridge thing (which actually isn't very high nor long) until I could take a potion again, grabbing dropped hearts whenever I could.

The Twins really were the most annoying because it moved so God damned fast some times. Skeletron is just... long, and the Destroyer is actually pretty easy.

So yeah, pretty much, I just played a whole lot during my vacations, that is all.
Title: Re: Terraria
Post by: fruckert on January 05, 2012, 04:26:16 PM
I tried twinking him but he refused.

Also, my Megashark (which I just built) came with the Unreal modifier on it.
No reforging necessary.

Title: Re: Terraria
Post by: Cerebus on January 05, 2012, 10:29:18 PM
Well it might not be 100% accurate but it's something like this. Also, add "killed Destroyer again" somewhere between, "built Megashark" and "built Hallowed set" since of course, he's also required for those.
What exactly sounds unusual, though?
Title: Re: Terraria

Title: Re: Terraria
Post by: SaiKar on January 06, 2012, 04:50:50 AM
Getting the wings removes huge jumping and fall damage-related issues from the game. It's basically godmodding. But sure.
Title: Re: Terraria
Post by: Cerebus on January 06, 2012, 05:12:24 AM
True, but it's not like it would have taken me so long to get the necessary Souls of Flight and Lights. And Feathers.
God modding would be more like giving Hallowed, Legendary Excalibur, Unreal Megashark, etc.
Only reason I actually accepted instead of farming them is when I saw that they actually were showing on your back. I needed those Demon Wings!
Oh and I had the Lucky Horseshoe for fall damage. As for jump, well... not as good, but Balloon in a Bottle and Spectre Bots give you quite a high jump, too. But yeah, of course, Wings are definitely way superior. Thoguh I actually kept all three, which gives amazing jumping capability.
Sacrificing Armour and such... but jumping!

Did you defeat the hard-mode bosses solo?
Title: Re: Terraria
Post by: Cerebus on January 07, 2012, 10:48:03 PM
Yeah.
Seriously, if you can get Heart Statues (I have 3) it makes the way easier.
I just build myself a platform (not sure how long, I think slightly above a full stack of stone) put my Heart Statues in the middle and that's where I fought the flying bosses and I killed the Destroyer on the hill just under it (reaching it whenever I needed some health).
Only the Twins nearly got me, but I killed the bastards! Even with Hallowed they're still a pain. Spazwhatever's Green Flamethrower hurts a lot... and the jerk's pretty fast, too.

The console version has pets, which are useless but adorable, and an extra boss after the hardcore bosses.
Also a set of bragging rights equipment for after beating said final boss.
But other than that, no, everything that you see in that vid appears to be PC exclusive, including the Eater pet.
Although I do hope that the console version updates as well, because the half blocks are pretty frickin' cool.

ed: Oh, yeah, the console also has elite versions of normal spawns.
They're typically called Dragon [Monster].

Here's the video, again, for people on this page who are too lazy to go back one and scroll all the way down with our broken quick reply.

I'm honestly planning on setting up a server of sorts when the time comes.
Because I found this game to be way, WAAAAY funner with people than without.

Redigit said that he's planning on getting the update out by the end of July, but that's entirely possible to not happen.

255!
I guess Red just used a couple of bytes for the maximum amount of players in the server, or something like that.
But you can cap it at anything between 1 and 255, so...yeah.

That might change, though, once the new server tool comes out.

I haven't beaten Skeletron Prime yet.
Or, more accurately, I can't seem to beat the Twins.

But I do have an Unreal Megashark, Excalibur, and a bunch of other top tier gear.
Title: Re: Terraria
Post by: Archem on June 07, 2013, 09:15:53 PM
Yeah, I never really was able to beat all the Hard Mode Bosses. I think I was able to beat The Destroyer of Worlds, and The Twins (with help from a friend who could solo all the bosses at the same time), but Skeletron Prime was impossible.

I didn't have too much luck with loot, though, so that may have something to do with my inability to beat them.
Title: Re: Terraria
Post by: fruckert on June 07, 2013, 10:07:33 PM
I found the Destroyer to be fairly easy with a flail and the right arena, but I can't seem to do that again.
Been a long time, etc.

Hmm, I should continue on the console version.
I just finished my world's dungeon, and am currently exploring hell.
Maybe I can beat the hardmode bosses and then fight the final boss.
