Title: Charas Doom - The Epic Battle of Stuff (Resurrecting)

While playing around with some of my GZDoom projects (modern day port of the old Doom engine) I had a sudden stroke of stupidity! Why not take advantage of the engine and make a Charas game in Doom? Unlike modding regular Doom, I can have fully colored PNG graphics, digital music and sound effects, custom enemies and all else. Even action scripts. Added to that custom playable character support, custom weapons, and so on!

We've tried several other games using Charas people, so, why not go FPS? XD I know, insane, weird, crazy, idea but I can do it, and it wouldn't be that hard to do since I have experience now.

Anyways. I'll start once I get sufficient resources and ideas. And to prove I can do this you can check my Doom works here:

Anyways, if you may, give some info and graphics, I can use charset graphics mind you, they may be small but I can work with them! Individual info I'm looking for mainly is names, abilities/weapons and etc. I can also add immunities/vulnerabilities/resistances thanks to ZDoom enhanced features. XD

Also give enemy/item/boss ideas. As long as it's within reason. GZDoom can handle a lot though.

But anyways, this will be my first community contribution and I promise not to quit it. :p

P.S. I'll work on a plot later. XD;;

Character Submissions should at least face forward, they can be charsets. I can make some frames and anims.

Doom normally only uses front, front left, left, left back, then back angles. I can use front facing only and I can use four directional too (front, left, back).

Normal Animations are: Pain, Death, Attack, Walk, Stand. I can also work with extras if you want an alternate attack or some behavior (though limited).

Also! I'd like some to work out a map in RM and send me full overhead views of them, with grids preferably so I can start making maps. If also possible, suggest music.

DEMO RELEASE

In this RAR package are download links for each required file EXCEPT Doom2.wad which I cannot privade as part of the package for obvious reasons.

Important things marked in red arrows. Lights.pk3 comes with GZDoom. And the CharasDoom.zip is in CHarasDoom.RAR. The connected arrows tells where you add these items. Clicking the ZDL button and Options allows you to select the IWAD (Doom2.wad) and the Source Port (GZDoom). Enjoy!


OH! Good news! You can get a well working alternative to doom2.wad here: Freedoom (http://savannah.inetbridge.net/freedoom/freedoom-iwad/), just download "freedoom-iwad-0.6.3.zip", unzip, and use Doom2.wad inside. It's perfectly legal!

Also, don't forget to type in CHRS00 under Warp in ZDL.

The other advantage is that it can involve up to 8 players as multiplayer. Meaning it'd be the first multiplayer Charas game-relative project. XD

Well, preferably I'd like ones with at least 4 directional facings and some frames, I CAN do minor frames if needed too.

Some monsters won't be 4 directional though of course.

There will be some one-directional enemies. You want to be an enemy?

XD You will definetly get the chance, hope you don't mind if I work in some animations so you can tell attacking from moving and hurt/dying. Aside from some sounds (might make some custom sounds, won't really use many of the default Doom sounds if possible)

Well, I'm looking for Charas-Project related stuff. Some random monsters is ok, but I'm mainly after Charas related stuff. As requested in the first post, people can submit characters and tell their abilities, vulnerabilities, etc.

It's me! Though, maybe a bit on the smaller side of things. Bluhman can be like a weird sniper dude who is stationary, and really weak up close, but tends to shoot at you from unexpected places.

I'll whip up a sound set in a moment.

ED: Sound set up. It's a bit quiet and not entirely what I want.. But people are over here right now, so I couldn't really speak all that loud. Anyway:

That's the only frame I've got right now, but I think I can come up with a few more. Might take a while, though.

How would something like this sound?:

-Four facing directions
-Posing, ready to shoot you
-A pair of death poses for animation (crouch, then fall over and die)

Edit: Also, I can grow/shrink sprites in GZDoom using a "Scale" setting for each object.

FFL also gave me an idea, random enemies could be bots.

No idea where to host my death cry though.

If possible: make the projectiles fly from the hands he's raising.
As for projectile graphics. A lightning ball or something would work. Or fire.

XD I extended the death animation for your submission if that is OK Prpl. I went through the entire alphabet (frames are marked by a letter in the alphabet). Right now I'm looking through my animations from PSX games for the spell attack.

Funny thing also to note, I found some purple electric ball animation from Shin Megami Tensei (PSX version) that I previously ripped that I found especially fitting. I'll also do a few experimental effects with this. You'll see once I've made a video.

Sorry for the blurryness, WMM crapped out so I've had to find a different means to compress video. >_<

This one will be updated over time as with the SaiBot who needs to be faster. Additions planned is a dynamic light flash, flare effect on the gun, and a hurt frame.

The afterimage and particles are custom effects, not native to GZDoom. Both were experimental for me and I'd say they passed the test, which surprises me getting it on the first go.

I'm in. :3  A marriage of the conditions that I'm too lazy to sprite a full-size character and have a Might and Magic sprite editor gave birth to my Kreegan understudy XD

He's fast, cowardly, shoots fireballs, and works in huge numbers.  Also come in winged variants for later levels and a bee-esque hivemind queen for a boss, but I'll get to those later.

I have Half-Life 2 at hand and other sound effect sources but not sure about ripping from a big game title. Though the default Doom weapons may be replaced eventually.

And yes, and very good on Vista I might add! I'm running it on Vista and it seems to be running quite smoothly.

Yes, and serves a dual-purpose of confusing you as well, I had one move by me and it seemed like he disappeared but he had moved behind me.

That is another thing that makes them so awesome. You got to dodge their attacks and manage to strike them. They stand still and are vulnerable when attacking. I think I'll make them a preferably ranged attacker without a melee strike. This would balance them out some.

And thanks! Submissions are welcome. If anybody could make a few maps in RM and give me some images of it and provide the chipset(s) I could use it as a blueprint and use the chipset as textures by expanding them. Also, make it gridded.

Also, I'll just note this for future reference to others that just side-views are a bit awkward on Doom, I tried it and it came out funny. XD

After a day's work the first beta of the Warxe_Phoenixblade, the first playable character is done! I decided to start with somebody I'm familiar with other than Alex and etc. Warxe has turned out awesome so far, quite befitting of the guy I'd say! XD

He's SSJ because he's on god mode, his face will be halved in size also since it's too big, and read the video description. BEHOLD THE ICY AWESOME OF THE WARXE! BEHOLD IT!

Nono, just sideviews ALONE look bad in a 3D environment XD all 4 directions would work pretty good (Doom uses 8 but I can make 4 work most definitely, front view works for enemies pretty well, players may be a bit awkward but it'll still work there too XD). Also, I've done both of those things before. If you look at my Fester's Doom enemies thingy there's an enemy that replicates and an enemy that heals itself.

I'm updating Warxe a bit with a "blast radius" on his freeze attack as well as some dynamic lights. Also I've made the ice needles more awesome (three one after the other!). Fun thing to note, the blue particles seem to melt like ice, an unintended but awesome effect.

No problems boozer, um, what did you mean by "participate"? Do you mean me participate? Or...?

Character Submissions should at least face forward, they can be charsets. I can make some frames and anims.

Doom normally only uses front, front left, left, left back, then back angles. I can use front facing only and I can use four directional too (front, left, back).

Normal Animations are: Pain, Death, Attack, Walk, Stand. I can also work with extras if you want an alternate attack or some behavior (though limited).

Also! I'd like some to work out a map in RM and send me full overhead views of them, with grids preferably so I can start making maps. If also possible, suggest music.

Ah good! You only need to make a left side frame instead of a left and right by the way unless one side is different from the other. Well if you do, the sounds then I'll list the sounds as per monster:

Pain
Seen/Heard player
Death
Active(wandering around)
Attacking

For Player it is

Pain
Death
Landing
Bumping into wall

and that's the basics.

Sadly, as a player, he has to be seen from at least 3 angles (left and right can be mirrored by the doom engine so left facing would only be needed, then forward and backview)

I'm just editing the charaset and adding new poses. Sure it'll look pixelated but it'd be complete. I don't want to MAKE anyone put in hours of work on this stuff. The cool thing is that this project can be updated with ease as I progress on it. I actually plan to keep up on this rather than it being a short run thing.

Plus I also plan to host some multiplayer. ^_^

Edit: I may plan to accept frontal facing only playables, though it's kinda awkward obviously, but works. XD People rarely look in third person. But where they are shooting as a player may be confusing to some in an online game. But it still works.

Also: I just realized I need to put Razor on the list too XD Maybe he can be Ron

Everything I've done so far is custom. No edited doom enemies, no modified projectiles or effects, everything is custom so far. :)

The only thing NOT custom is the maps so far. I'm still waiting for some map submissions to put in as Charas Doom levels. Gridded preferably. So I can start on level design.

Yeah. And by gridded I mean a map overview made and screen-shotted with grids (not really necessary, there's an option in the RMs to do this), this can include rooms and stuff. I can easily convert overviews to Doom maps because the builder is top view (and 3D view for slight adjustments).

There is slope options too which will make rooftops possible. And I can script doors that teleport you to inside house maps, or have doors open and close in an animated way or slide up and down as normal.

I need some map plans basically. To work as blueprints.

I can do that with ACS script pretty easily. :) Anybody willing to map out a blueprint of the Charas Pub? Not asking for anything really fancy, just something that works. I'll use these as a setup for the actual maps.

Sadly an ever-changing map is unlikely. Unless it's a random pick of 2 or 3 similar maps which is possible. But I suggest a best guess.

Furniture in the ceiling? That's gold.

I was thinking like, have one of each of Charas's "Monsters" characters inside, in front of tables, but with their A.I.s shut off, so you can walk up to them, and they won't do a thing, but if you hurt one of them, they all jump at you at the same time with their A.I.s activated.


And maybe some painting in the walls, only the paintings would be Razor's Unfunny comics and Mooses' What-Were-They-Called comics. Or avatars.

Also have a set of Charas: The Gathering cards in a table.

I remember the toilet door of the Pub acted as some sort of time-space bending device, so you could set it so everytime you open it, a random monster/healing item comes out (and have the "Monsters with AI shut off" attack them)

I think you should make a weapon which ricochets... like a ninja knife or something.

Is there any way I can contribute towards this ace-looking game!?

EDIT: In face, I wanna work on a comedy Doom game aswell! Where do I start? There's no tutorials
on Youtube and it says I need some strange file.

I like how this is coming along. I'd contribute, but it's hard to find appropriate sprites as a base. God knows I'm too lazy for custom sprites.

Also nice work on JeT, especially the voice work. That "... scum" is pretty awesome.

Yours is actually very tough despite lower HP and overall power, the stealth, confusion and speed makes for a remarkable adversary. There may be enough graphics for a player too. XD

2 Quetsions,

1: im pretty good at Level design. Would you want me to map out something for you? It would prolly be on a peice of grid paper drawn mostly by hand so its no direct Map you could use but it could give an idea for an area (complete with enemy and item placement).

2: Can my Monster have multiple attacks? i was thinking of 3 so far, a melee, a strong melee that could maybe bump you around (not sure if that works in doom engine) and a ranged attack.

Nice Darkfox, thats coming along awesome.  Im working on some Map designs for you at the moment, ive started a Multi-player skirmish style map that should be balanced for a team versus team game.  Im also working on Single player Style maps, with keys/doors/monsters+boss.

Im not really sure what style you want so im makin both.

The Grey colored parts are raised a floor level. The "balcony" in the base has view over both of the hall ways to add for some Base Defence.

Working: Enemies PERIOD, there are generic RPG enemies like slimes and zombies using Might and Magic graphics. These you will encounter in three rooms. There are 5 types of enemies you will encounter other than the Charasian ones which will be a few off starting off, there will be a sub-boss and a boss in this level upon completion. I will add health items and refill items before demo release. It is nearly done for release and testing.

Ooh! A chance to try out the ramp feature of GZDoom! This is great for a multiplayer! Deathmatch or Team Deathmatch, it'd definetly work! XD Thanks! It looks good!

One thing though is that Doom has no layering. Meaning I can't easily have it go under upper level unless... hmmm... I COULD use a trick for this perhaps using a camera texture so it displays the other end kinda like how in Unreal. I think there are ways I can synthesize such an effect... hm...

OH! Good news! You can get a well working alternative to doom2.wad here: Freedoom (http://savannah.inetbridge.net/freedoom/freedoom-iwad/), just download "freedoom-iwad-0.6.3.zip", unzip, and use Doom2.wad inside. It's perfectly legal!

Also, don't forget to type in CHRS00 under Warp in ZDL.

EDIT:

There are two secrets in this map. One is in the main area, in a dark spot and the second is just before the boss. Something will seem amiss.

I downloaded everything, got the game to work, and ended up playing Doom as the Doom Guy. The enemies were the standard Doom enemies. I stood on the pressure plate and couldn't figure out what to do next because all the doors were closed.

I changed the difficulty to Very Easy and retried, and ended up playing Doom as Warxe. The enemies were the standard Doom enemies. The same thing happened.

I changed the difficulty back to Normal and retried, and ended up playing Doom as Alex. The enemies were the standard Doom enemies. The same thing happened.

I'm confused.

Also I suggest putting in the command-line "+playerclass Warxe_Phoenixblade" or "+playerclass Alexander" because the darn thing defaults to doomguy.

Did you remember to add the warp thing?

This is VITALLY important. It MUST be CHRS00. Can't be anything else or it is NOT Charas Doom but just regular Doom.

Only ONE room has a pulse light effect and thats the first secret room. There are no actual screen flashes. The lighting is usually modest and flowing. Anyways Screen flashes hurt my eyes so I don't often use them.

There is no need to fix the height, the height is fine for Doom actually. And I think the summoning Legitimates could work by running a script everytime they are summoned to check for however so long they are still alive.

Damn, there are no intense flashes. Just tints the color red if you take a hurting as per default to the game. Should I change the color tint to something else? Item pickups are small and almost unnoticeable tinting. I think Fish has played games before that did this. I need to contact him. It'd suck if this game hurt him some way O_o;;.

The only complaint I have with the demo is that once I get any weapon for Warxe, such as the shotgun, I can't return to his ice magic missile. Yeah, I tried to use the "Previous Weapon/Next Weapon" key.

There is no shotgun in the level. If you get a shotgun then your not playing the Charas Doom level.

Just so you guys know, this is NOT the level. And if you see this level then something is wrong and I'll try to help you fix it. Be sure your loading the packages and have CHRS00 in the map that is, CHRS and two zeros.

Okay, managed to play you actual levels.

One thing: You should make some enemeis drop mana, otherwise Warxe may just get useless if you have bad aim.

 Other thing: the bosses' homing magic killed me after he was dead, and because the game stoped to show some cutscene, preventing me to be able to run from them. (Okay, the demo was over already, but . . .) You could just make them disappear after a while, eh?

Perhaps instead of a time limit, since he's supposed to be a boss and therefor though, set it so they disappear once he's dead.

Tried that with a "KillChildren" command. Apparently it only works with enemies spawned by another enemy.

There is no need to fix the height, the height is fine for Doom actually. And I think the summoning Legitimates could work by running a script everytime they are summoned to check for however so long they are still alive.

That's what I was doing anyway. I tried standing on it, nothing happened. I tried dashing over it as fast as possible, nothing happened. It goes down but nothing happens anywhere else.

Looks Awesome fox!!  BTW, im having issues getting the game to work. I can get The Normal Doom game to start up, but the second i put the Warp code in and try to launch, my computer instantly restarts... Ive got a couple things to try though, 1. Im running it off a USB key, so that cant be reliable and 2. Ill try a different computer, maybe this one just sucks.

But i know i got all the info correct, so im not sure whats the issue. I will try it on my home computer when i get home.

Also Dark Fox, i got a single player Map comin, it will be finish within the Hour and prolly posted here between 11:30-Midnight

ok i just tried it at home and it works Perfectly... not sure why my computer at work was randomly restarting when i tried to launch the game.

although lol i ran outta bullets very fast and managed to punch all the enemies to death until i hit those demon guys lol.

But damn dude!!! this shows me a ton of sweet things, like the lifting and lowering walls, switchs you need to stand on, cool monsters... this is bloody awesome!

Im trying to make a chara/monsters but im really not liking anything ive made so far. I think its the straightness of the 2D style thats messin with me.

Like Co-Op and Deathmatch. I can also have alternative gameplay with winner/loser teams dependent on current gameplay. I've considered making a custom gametype for multiplayer based on The Great Emerald.

Yes, basically it was the attacking team had an objective to do, and the defending team had to try and stop them. THen theyd swithc sides and in the end points would be tallied or something to determine the winner. Im sure you already know this though.

Sorry to double but I need to make an announcement:

I plan to update soon with a new demo WITH multiplayer support. Also there will be adjustments based on each of your inputs. Certain enemies will drop mana now, Evil JeT will not be so horrendous anymore. And I intend to put in more character graphics and fix some missing ones.

I also intend to add in a couple new playables:

Sai'Kar - Holy
Red Giant - Fire

That'll bring the playable characters to 4. But I intend more and I will say this: I have no gun guy! There is absolutely no traditional gun toting hero. I'm going to eventually need a traditionalist, anybody out there that has a character like that for the guy with the gun?

Uhm... you know when I made these characters I didn't think you'd actually like them, so I didn't really work on their character beside the sprites.
They still need a class, a weapon, an alignment and to go further, a personality and such.

For Murof, I always though of a Warrior using two-handed weapons, mostly on the neutral-evil side.

For Sarah C. I always thought of something like a rogue or thief using small weapons, such as daggers, on the neutral-good side.
But the fact that she wears bright colours may look weird for such class. Uhm...
But now that you mention it, a rapier might be a good weapon for her. So she would be a Fencer.
Yeah, I like that.

Well, I've always seen Murof more as a medieval weapons user rather than modern ones, but if you think it would work, you could always use him. The only thing is... I can't sprite very well, and wouldn't be able to make Doom sprites of him.

I probably would've signed up to be a playable character, if I had known that it'd be possible. I was like the 2nd person to sign up for the game, and that was still when enemies were being created. That, and most of the other main characters so far have been involuntarily accepted anyways.

But If movement frames can be edited into the sheet, whilst I make some portraits, then I could also work well as a playable character.

Sorry, I meant Bluhman. But here's the thing. I'm working on some advanced features of GZDoom, like 3D floors to finish up that deathmatch map. So all I need is here:

To get it to work. I need this because I'm working all other things in and I need a little help. I could do it, sure, but I want to devote time in design.

The running is needed for movement, doesn't need to be many frames, 3 is really all that's needed. Shooting would be 2 frames and I only need side and back versions. Same with pain since those are already done.

The updated version of The Office. It now features 3D floors (the bridges) instead of wall teleporters. BTW, 3D floors mean that I can have a floor over a floor, but it is kinda difficult.

Updates:

After this video I removed the reflection since it was damaging performance and re-added some decor. Performance has dramatically increased in this map. Also, soon the main level will get this treatment, though shinyness may remain for it since it isn't a hurt on performance. (this is due to 3D objects being replicated and flipped for the reflection, it was for the best to remove the reflection in the Charas Office Deathmatch map).

Anyways, as requested by Grandy, rain was added! Thanks to JohnnyFive from the zDoom forums for this nice feature!

Edit: Yep, as expected, performance has dramatically increased in the Deathmatch map.

Can't test it. I can play as Warxe (with not magic) in the normal Doom game, but whenever I try to change the map to CHRS00 or CHDM00, the game shuts down. I goes as far as showing the stage's name, but nothing else.

Oh wait, managed to do it.

Somebody has to host a game, and the other players join by using the IP of the host.

Host IP Address: The IP of the host. Wow...

Game Mode: Either Co-Op or Deathmatch. For DeathMatch use CHDM00

Players: 1-8, there is a joining option, this makes it so you JOIN instead of HOST.

Frag Limit: For host to assign the ammount of frags until the DM is over.

LARGE BUMP. Though this is announcement that this project is not dead. Progress merely went underground for a while as I work on other things, and waiting for GZDoom to gain brand new features and tweaks, which happened recently. However, I have started to make a new monster. I wonder if anybody recognizes it...

Next will add hands and animations and finish up the shading. Got to decide behavior pattern and stuff too. Though it is likely that he can pass through solid objects.

Suggestions? Sound suggestions? Attack suggestions? I considered a modified boo giggle though I'm not sure.

I thought for Melee he'd do an "inappropriate touch" attack which would just be a punch but funny to put in the death quote "(player) was touched inappropriately by Archem". But other than that, I guess I'll wait for him to say what to do.
