Title: Emerates' MIDI Shoppe
Post by: Emerates on January 20, 2007, 03:40:34 PM
Here are a bunch of MIDI ideas I've had.  Most of them will probably never go anywhere, but whatever.  Tell me what you think, por favor.  Keep in mind, none of them are finished, so yeh.

^A couple of sad things I wrote on my guitar

http://www.freewebs.com/emerates/Behinhd%20The%20Waterfall.mid

Thing that sounds kind of like a waterfall theme to me.

http://www.freewebs.com/emerates/Celesta%20Thing%20I%20Made%20While%20I%20Should%20Have%20Been%20Doing%20The%20Dishes.mid

Random thing written with the Dm chord.

A couple different instrumental versions of A7X's M.I.A.

BTW, if the links don't work, tell me and I'll add the files as an attachment later.

They're not bad. A couple of things though. They need more variety and less repeatitive melodies. Add some harmony in their or simply a deeper variety of instruments. Some bass maybe, too. All in all, it's up to you, but I really don't think they're bad for starters.

Post by: Emerates on January 30, 2007, 11:57:48 PM
Thanks for the... post.

Like I said, these are all unfinished things.  Mainly, they're arpeggios just sequenced to set the mood and to help me with the keys and stuff.  Hopefully, I'll expand on some of them, but others probably won't go anywhere further.

If you want to make them a midi, you should probally use more than one intrument.

BTW, Behind The Waterfall = fav.

Heh, pentatonics...

Not bad, but could use a lot more substance.

I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not..... I can never tell :D.  But thanks for giving me feedback.

I'll try and expand on a few of these later, with the whole 'harmony' thing.  Right now, though, these are pretty much just demo versions and random ideas.

^ Two things I'll eventually throw together.  They're supposed to sound like an end credits/intro thing, but are as of yet unfinished.  The sudden change at the end is supposed to be the beginning of a transition into a different rhythm on the first one.

Tell me what you think, please.
Title:
Post by: Meiscool-2 on February 04, 2007, 06:14:58 PM
I thought they would be more one intrument songs, but you used another towards the end. Those were the best parts:p

You've got the melodies down, now you just need more intruments. With only the few you've got, it sounds very repeatitive.
Title:
Post by: Emerates on February 04, 2007, 11:41:43 PM
Thanks.

These are just sample tracks.  'Finality' is the song I'm trying to work on most right now.  Those two are just guide things that I'll combine to (hopefully) complete the whole song.  I'm kinda aiming to finish it within the next couple of weeks, as well as working on some other pre-existing stuff and writing new riffs and/or what-not.

Been awhile since I posted anything, but here goes.

This was just a random thing I random thing I was playing on my guitar when I decided to put it into MIDI format.  Then I expanded on it with the glockenspiel and the lower stuff.

Comment, please!

I like your midis. They'r ejust like the stuff I like to make/listen to. I've always favored minor keys, and sad music...

the 'Quiet Curse' instilled me with a need to sob for no good reason. Good job :D

Also, if you dont mind, amy i toy with the 'Celesta thing i made when I was supposed to be doing dishes'? And if you will allow me to, use it? dont worry, you'll get credit...

EDIT: COuldn't wait for an answer, so I edited it anyway.

Thanks Boba.  If you want to use it, go for it, as long as you give credits and what-not.  Your edit of it was kinda strange, though.  The part you put in didn't seem to go with it as well as other things could.

Well, here's an update of that battle MIDI from a couple of posts back.

Yes, I have returned.

Sorry for being away so much, especially to the guys in Dragonium's RP, but my internet was canceled back in May, so I've had very, very, very... etc. little acceß to teh internet.  However, I was feeling manic the other day and started to make some new stuff and work with old stuff.

'Check it'.

See you guys around, hopefully.  Bis spater, foo's.

Your actual melodies are great. They just lack full instrumentation. I want to hear you stuff with more instruments. My favorite was A Forgotten Place. My favorite part came right after that string section 0:23 and on. I think I heard a set of low strings in the background. That part sounded full and complete. Great atmosphere in that song overall. The louder strings could go on for another bar though.

For those of you who have a sense of humor, here's a MIDI I started this morning.  It's just an intro right now, but I intend to work more on it.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that that Fanfare thing was a finished product.  It's supposed to be like a victory thing.

I listened to A Forgotten Place, I feel that its a bit too repetitive, and not enough melody.  Also, Using a few chords in there could have helped it out as well.  Do you know how to do M and m chords?  Those could really help the piece a lot.

What key is it in?

I agree with this 100%. I think if you embellished your melodies, the songs themselves would sound great, instead of just good. I think this goes for everything you have so far, including the recent stuff. I really like the direction you're going in with Running Water. There are plenty of ways to "cheat" to make the songs seem longer and seem to include more than what's actually there, which is what I do a lot. Besides repeating sections in between other sections, there's also the good old adding instruments to something that's already used and the mix and match, where you switch parts around that fit in with other parts (like using the same harmony twice in a row, but the second time using it with a melody that previously incorporated a different harmony). It makes it sound like something completely different, even though the listener has heard all of the individual parts already. It can get tricky if it becomes too repetitive (which it definitely has for me sometimes), but most of the time it works really well. Keep working on this stuff! I really want to say what you can come up with!

Here's something I started about a month back.  It's kind of a dungeon-esque theme.  Not finished, but off to a good start.  It would probably work best in place with few enemies or where you could avoid them.  It takes awhile to build up.

Here's a MIDI I made about a week ago.  I've been taking music theory class, so my stuff should be getting better.  I wrote this while I was messing around with a keyboard for the first time.  After that, I added some chords and a second part.  Tell me what you think, true believers.  (I know there are at least three of you.)

Were the chords and the main melody supposed to be inn time with each other? 0_o If they were supposed to be on some funky off beat it was slightly too jumbled to make out.

Could probably use some work, then?  I'll time the chords with the melody's phrasing and see if that works any better, instead of using straight half notes.

Still working on the other one, but couldn't help but start something new.  It's just piano right now, but I plan on adding more instrumentation toward the 'end'.

Edit:  Also, there's this thing I had to do for my music theory class.  I would also appreciate some feedback on it before Monday.

Here's another thing I made about an hour ago.  It's quite chromatic.  I might harmonize it more later, but it sounds quite fine on its own.  However, there's this weird slidy-bending thing it does in one arpeggio I can't seem to get rid of.  If you can help with that, please tell me how either here or in a PM.

That was...interesting.
I personally think it blended a little too much, and it ended up sounding like a second looped over and over and over again.
Pretty good, once you fix it up a bit.

Many of these are simplistic and lacking, but it is noticeable that you have formal musical knowledge in these. The one that's stood out the most, to me was the 12 bar improv, but it seems to quickly break what would otherwise be a very very good structure, and takes a couple listens to get used to. By fixing up the structure of it, and adding a little drum and bass, you could have a really groovy blues tune, there.

One thing you should try fir the 16th notes (I'm guessing that is what they are ) is make them fit together like a puzzle so it doesn't seem quite as random.  It sounded good though. :)

Yeah, I didn't put much heart into that one, it was just an assignment for independent study that I wanted to see how it would sound.  I'll consider that for the next one, though.  Thank ya.

In case you missed it, I submitted a finalized version of 'Summit' to CR because for some reason I couldn't get into my host site last week.  I also have this new song right here I thought some people might like.  It's got a bit different feel than my other stuff, and conjures images of 16-bit sunsets, in my opinion.

Here are a few things I worked on the last couple of days.

Cave Theme 1 - Kind of a simple, quiet cave.
http://www.box.net/shared/tci19ejsjp

Valley Song - Maybe a farm tune or a village tune.
http://www.box.net/shared/gxzttf9bk5

Theme 22 - Something I'm working on for a cutscene or the like in my game.  It's not quite complete yet, so keep that in mind.
http://www.box.net/shared/u2r6t5iyy4

Also, since I'm posting stuff, I was hoping to get some feedback on this sprite I'm also currently revamping.

Any kind of feedback is always welcome!

Cave Theme 1:
Very simple, kinda repetitive in the Pizzicato strings part, I think maybe just changing one note every so many measures could help, the piano took a while to change as well.

Valley Song:
Nice, but there were quiet a few times where it should like the piano was playing a wrong note (so maybe you need an accidental somewhere...?)  It was kind of distracting, but your instrument choice was pretty decent here.

Theme 22:
I enjoyed listening to this song.  The string parts was nicely done, but the (Harp?) note doubling kinda threw me off.  At first I thought the double notes was an echo, then later it went away.  Maybe making the second note farther away, or make the first note longer in general?

As for your sprite, Its an interesting style.  I can't really say much because I'm not all that experienced in spriting. x.x

That's my "review".  Hope it helps.
