There's been a similar topic or 5 about music and soundtracks and composers before... But I'm gonna start a new one because why not?
We all have opinions of what our favorite soundtrack is from a game. Just name your top 3 or something along those lines. No rules, you can have more than one soundtrack per series, go crazy! As for me...
Number 3:
Final Fantasy VIII/IX Original Soundtrack
It was hard to choose between the 2, so I'm gonna give 'em both some love. VIII just had some great catchy songs. IX had a variety of different songs; catchy, beautiful, intense, etc. Not to mention the orchestrated tracks played during cutscenes were great as well.
Number 2
Xenoblade Chronicles
I don't have much to say about the songs in it because I'm hungry and want a cheesesteak, but... All I can say is that if you've played the game you can agree the OST is damn good!
Number 1
Chrono Cross
I doubt anyone expected this. Every song in the game strikes an emotional nerve within me. Every song is beautifully and carefully composed and most if not all the songs fit within the game. My all time favorite game song is and forever will be "Scars Left By Time". When i hear that song, memories flood my mind with my personal past experiences and how the game effected my life. I love hearing all different parts each song has and how it just flows so damn smoothly. If you haven't heard the soundtrack before, give it a listen!
Now it's someone else's turn! Let's hear it!

I wouldn't say I expected it, but i came here to say exactly this, so that's nice that you beat me to it.
Favorite song: Best VGM 35 - Chrono Cross - Dream of the Shore Near Another World (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROKcr2OTgws#)

Looking at my Itunes, I have more game songs from Dark Cloud 2 than anything else... so the OST to that must've been pretty good.
Second xenoblade, especially the forest themes.

Well,
3. Kingdom Hearts, I always get those tunes stuck in my head after playing these games.
2. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, great sound and great instruments. Each song matches the area perfectly and the boss theme is catchy.
1. Final Fantasy IX, I don't even have to explain this.

Its funny that you mention the boss theme... I transcribed it for an orchestration course and my composition teacher asked if I listened to that garbage on a regular basis. He was fine with other videogame music people arranged but I guess not that one. haha

Sounds like your teacher is a butt.
Also, for some reason, the entire soundtrack from Crystal Chronicles is on spotify...

Well, if you look at it from a theoretical stand point its overly repetitive, and the melody doesn't really change much throughout which is what he was trying to say. Educationally, he just said it was like junk food. I agree to an extent, but its still fun to listen to.

Im pretty sure most rap songs have a repetive 1 or 2 measure background sound/beat. I find most orchestrated music boring because i cant put it with a story and some of it just isn't catchy enough.

I liked the Xenosaga osts so much back in the day. Sadly I don't remember them. ha.
-
In no particular order.
Halo Reach
- It's not an RPG like most of the other entries here, but it has a phenomenal OST that ranges from some awesome upbeat action music to some slower paced ominous tracks.
FFIX
- Same reasons as others have put down.
Chrono Cross
- Maybe I only thought of it because daoman mentioned it, but some of the music is just great. The opening track pulled me in, but there were many other great tracks to. Not a huge fan of the actual game though.

Hotline Miami is way up there for me. Been listening to that soundtrack to death.
Nothing beats Hydrogen
"Hydrogen" - M.O.O.N (Hotline Miami OST) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0ILqWcd214#)
-
Of all the songs in that game, I think this one stands as the best.
"Miami Disco" - Perturbator (Hotline Miami OST) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYLxlIF7Wn0#)

Eh, I'm not a fan. I found it boring, but that's just me. Plus I'm not really a fan of the 'dance' type music in general. I was expecting the rick roll singer to start singing lol.

For the life of me I can't think of a solid three, but at least I know I've always loved these two.
2. Final Fantasy 7. FF7 was my first FF and its soundtrack has stuck with me since I first heard it. I never did get tired of Fighting, no matter how many times I heard it. Also, all the other tracks. Well not all of them. With 80 tracks, there were bound to be some I don't like.
But for all the good ones, you gotta be thankful for OCRemix.
1. Donkey Kong Country 2. Basically this is pretty perfect. Without having heard all of his work I safely declare it the epitome of David Wise. Every track made for a level is 10/10 work. Every nonlevel track is pretty good too.
I recently encountered a tidbit of information, actually. DKC1's soundtrack wasn't quite as good as the sequels (Wise was working with someone for some of the tracks), but it still had a few tracks that stood out. One of these was the underwater level track, Aquatic Ambiance. Now, one of DKC2's more popular tracks is Stickerbush Symphony (it even got into SSBB) and it turns out that it was actually composed as a sort of "sequel" to AA. After finding that out and then listening to them both, it really makes sense.
I wanna learn moar.

How about Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon? Insane game, insane soundtrack.

Aawww man, just started playing that game. I love the soundtrack. Power Glove (https://soundcloud.com/powerglove) makes some pretty sweet tracks in general.

I feel like a link to this belongs in this thread.

Nice radio station

Am I the only one that loves the sound of the brass instruments in Final Fantasy 9's "Escape From Alexandria"? Oh the sound of brass... So much depth... Mmmm lol
-
Dust: An Elysain Tail has a fine *** ost
-
Yeah, it's pretty nice.
-
Windwaker. I think it fits the game perfectly, and "The Legendary Hero" and "Farewell Hyrule King" are two that I listened to on loop when I first downloaded the soundtrack.
