Title: Age of Main Characters
Post by: psychofreak on July 05, 2008, 03:48:07 AM
I know I 'm making too many post in an hr and starting almost as many threads but I just started and I just have a lot of questions.

So I'm looking for some more opinions on what age do you think suits main characters the most in adventure and save the world rpg. Just want some opinions .

13-16 is the norm, but I prefer 18 and up for my guys.

Depends. You have the:
8-13 years old Silly Kid with small sword or silly weapons (Breath of Fire series, FFTA, EarthBound)
14-21 teenager, which is usually the most used (FF, Suikoden, you name it)
22-30 veteran of battle, which is also frequent
Older people are rare. Unless it's the:
100 > immortal beings from the past, elves, semi-gods, usually looking like the 14-21 teenager. I've seem my share of them. (Breath of Fire 4, other games I can't reccal)

As for what I think suits better, it really depends. EarthBound looked good with kids as main characters, but putting them into Suikoden would ruin it, and the other way around.

I'm using an immature 19 year old. It really depends on your story, though.

Younger characters have more room to grow and players feel like they can relate to them more, which is why they are typically the staple main character.

I like using 16-20 year old charceters, because they are just delvolping
and it's easy to adjust them. But you need to have a verity of age groups in your party.
Like in one of my games The main hero(Cloud McCloud) is 18 and his mentor and best friend(Rick Castella)
is 30.Age also has to suit the chacters job/ocupation.Cloud is a 18 year old surfer.Rick is a 30 year old
Yacht Captain.Try reversing the roles and it's just wrong.

You have to remember that a 30 year old isn't exactly old. They're not wrinkly or anything. What about Half-Life? Gordon Freeman looks in his 40's, yet it works like a charm. Personally my characters are in their early 20's. But then in Nether the boy is only 13. Depends on your audience, purpose etc.

I prefer using 17-22.  Honestly, 17 is pushing it.  I mean, you wouldn't trust a 17 year old to save your entire planet, especially not one of my characters (who tend to be insane).  That's why I tend to make other characters the leader of the group and make the main character himself very reliant on him/her for support and guidance.

Think about the ages of the characters compared to each other. If you mix it up a bit, you can get more varied characters and more interesting interaction. So.. try not to make them all the same age, I guess.

In most rpgs, when an older character is introduced, you can pretty much assume that the character is either going to die, or will leave the group. Such events, (especially death related ones) force the younger character to mature into someone who seems older to the player. It is basically a 'cheap' way of getting around the "I want them young, but I want them mature too" fiasco.

Also, the Gordon Freeman example really doesn't apply because it's a first person shooter and not an rpg. In most fps games the character is older to relay realism. Aside from that, characters arn't as important because you don't see them aside from cutscenes and the occasional awesome reflection the programmers put into water/glass.

Just do what every rpg does. Make a character that looks to obviously be in his early to mid twenties, and only mention his age of 16 in the insert booklet.

Make your main charas 15-22. At that age, they're old enough to take care of themselves. I think that theres lots of gamers in this age group and they can be able to relate to your charas. But you should add an older chara(s) like 22-38 in the mix too to add some experience and be like a role model to your main charas.

For Mage's Eve, my youngest main character is 17, while my oldest is 800+, though he's got Longevity and looks very old, rather like Yoda if Yoda was a bitchy, pessimistic old fart. (Oldest non-immortal was 45.)
However, in other RP's I've used a 4-year-old girl, while my oldest non-immortal character was 135. He was mostly confined to a wheelchair and was incapable of remembering anything other than the immediate, very important things.
