My computer **** the bed, so until I get my tax returns back I won't really be around too much.  :( Hopefully I can get my computer fixed or atleast extract the hard drive. Until then, this is... goodbye...!  :'(

Pretty sure that's how he's posting.

But not everyone has those, you know. My phone's most advanced technological thing is being able to take low res photos. No internet.

I just got one myself last month only. Not having money to spare (or none at all) sucks. Like Lucas' friends when drunk. Literally. Yeah...

I only got one sometime late last year. Before that? I suppose I was on par with Lucas in the phone department.

As long as the phone can call, text and store music I'm all good. Don't see the point of adding a silly operative system, internet capabilities, touch screen, ocarina apps ect. It's just distracting, hell it distracts all of my students. Can't leave them alone with a phone or they'll just facebook up and stop working.
Title: Re: brb
Post by: Cerebus on February 24, 2012, 12:13:12 AM
It's useful when you have no Internet access, yet want to use it, though.
Good examples are: getting directions to somewhere, finding an address (restaurants, etc. (then directions!)), forums/FaceBook/chat/etc. when not in class nor at work (like while waiting for someone or the bus, whatever), etc.
As for applications such as game, also useful when on a break at work or riding the metro.

Sure, smart phones aren't a necessity, but all the additions can actually be pretty useful and fun.
However, of course, they tend to get more expensive...

But anyway, yeah, see you soon, eh. Hope everything gets fixed!

Well hm. That didn't take very long. I guess my windows was riddled with registry errors and was beyond repair. Luckily, the hardware is all fine so I had a friend copy my hard drive and reboot windows. I'm back and I have all my files and shtuff! =D

Also, I don't have a smart phone. Because **** paying 100 dollars a month.

I'm with you one hundred percent man, those things are nothing but fancy paperweights. Phones are supposed to make calls, for everything else we have computers.
Title: Re: brb
Post by: Archem on February 26, 2012, 05:12:27 PM
That's dumb. They are useful by being a handful of other gadgets wrapped into one. Sure, we have computers, but the idea here is that they're a computer that, while less powerful that the one you have back home, is always with you. They're your phone, your weather forecast, your email, your GPS, your camera, your clock, calendar, alarm, your music player, your Game Boy, and yes, even your phone. On top of that, there are the countless apps available that add features, like banking information, product information via barcode scanner, music discovery system (for when you want to know what that song on the radio is), recipe book, and more.

Hell, they're even a TV for if you have kids that you need to shut up.

Don't call them useless just because you don't have one (I was there once, I know how you think). Just because they seem to be used largely for Facebook and Angry Birds by tweens doesn't mean that they don't have any legitimate use. They're incredibly damn useful. That's why they're so common, so popular, and used to be that thing only rich businessmen had (and is now an essential).

I think you summed up why I hate them pretty well in that one sentence.

But yeah, okay, I'll give. They do have useful qualities to them.

I had a smartphone for a while. It was awesome, but I didn't need it. So I got rid of it. I don't care what people decide to waste their money on, but I'm willing to wager the majority of smart phone owners don't need them or utilize them effectively.

Such is the case of advancing technology. However, the same could be said of other high-tech gadgets, such as computers...

Title: Re: brb
Post by: Prpl_Mage on March 05, 2012, 03:59:20 PM
Since I got one of these they don't seem so special and flashy anymore. I used to give 10 year olds with these kind of phones a queer look since it just seemed unreasonable to me.
But well, it's a phone and the texting system is all messed up. I can access the interwebs and the screens aren't bad anymore. Also zerow, that voltorb flip inspired game. Great timeslayer.

Only problem I've noticed is that it tries to connect to all sorts of wireless internet connections and that it drains battery like mad. Needs to be charged like everyday or you'll run out of juice.

Also, I got one of those ZTE, they aren't that expensive. A phone without touch screen and such costs about the same.

Airplane mode. Doesn't make the thing fly, but it'll cut all wireless functions and keep your battery going. I think it makes it so your phone part disables, too... Maybe it's better to just manually disable the wireless features instead.

Yeah I did that eventually, but like you said, no calls or texts arrive when it's on. They all pop up afterwards. But it's useful when you have to keep your focus up. Should force my students to do it.

Title: Re: brb
Post by: Prpl_Mage on March 06, 2012, 06:48:55 AM
Ah yes, I'm a teacher these days. It's just that the discipline in swedish schools are kinda lacking which results in youngsters playing around with their fancy phones instead of paying attention to the class. The fancy phones are a big problem because it's so very distracting for anyone. Youtube and porn is one poke away, gambling and betting, browser games and farmville, facebook and twitter.
And the schools didn't realize what was happening until it was too late and now we don't have any guidelines on how to prevent it. Taking their phones became a bad thing some year ago since some dumb arse decided that it was offensive. So there's been a lot of work on how we should prevent this but yet no solution. My idea was to emp the **** out of the school area so that nothing without a cable would be able to connect to a network inside the building.

Taking a phone until the end of class is offensive?
The ****?

One of the teachers at my old school was highly suspected of owning a cell phone jammer.
Apparently they're not entirely legal, though.
Still, reception in his class was nonexistant.
Maybe you could get permission to coat your walls in a faraday cage mesh?
Or would that be too mad-sciency?

Also, whaddya teach?
Title: Re: brb
Post by: Prpl_Mage on March 06, 2012, 04:40:46 PM
Apparently some kid got offended that the teacher took her phone, since it was her personal phone with personal information, photos, texts, music ect ect and her property and no one should be allowed to take a kids property away from them yadayadayadayada. We get this alot over here. Lots of people with opinions about stupid stuff. Especially when it comes to kid. The kids growing up now won't now squat about taking responsibility, following the rules of society ect ect. Just because someone decided that the right thing to do with kids is love them 100% of the time, support their every decision, never question what they want and put them first in all possible friggin scenarios. Aka, they can be real assholes and their parents will insist that their kids are doing the right thing.

Oh, I teach religion. Also math at the moment.

Thing is, one student who is being distracted will also distract the others and harm the whole class.

"Tell me, Mr Mage.  How is it that your entire class managed to fail the religious studies exam?"

"Oh, just some advice I took from Cerebus the poison lord on the internet."

"Oh! In that case, keep up the good work!"

This is the only possible outcome.
Title: Re: brb
Post by: Prpl_Mage on March 07, 2012, 06:09:59 PM
If everyone fail - everyone fails. Meaning that they don't get a grade on the course (which isn't good) which leads to less points (which isn't good), lowering their chances to get into the education they want afterwards (which isn't good) and sometimes it might even prevent them for finishing the current school (which isn't good). For every student that fail something - It's my job to give them extra assignments, write new tests ect ect. Which gives me more work than I should have to do (which isn't good).

So when they don't know that we have a test because they've been updating their facebook status when I told them - they'll probably fail it and then I'll have to do extra work. Bad thing indeed.

Also, for some reason. Students lack the ability to see how a bad grade in religion matters in any way. Silly atheistic sweden.
Title: Re: brb
Post by: Cerebus on March 07, 2012, 07:04:59 PM
Well yes, if they fail everything and can't get further in life, it's their own problem. They should have put more importance into school rather than playing with their phones and going "Zomg y do i fail? teahcer h8 me!!!"

Now of course I'm kidding. I mean, if a whole class fails, they WILL indeed blame the teacher, in this case, you.

But they should be aware of the consequences of not taking school seriously. And actually, chances are that they will, since your class is probably not the only one in which they mess with their phone.

Better than to live in the country where a Spanish teacher feels the need to stop his class to give a lecture on how important God is in our lives.

State and church is separated over here as well. Religion classes aren't about preaching the word of lord jeebuz the great. It's about teaching people about different religions, cults and other ways to look at life. Which then branches into ethics and morals. So it's kinda useful, especially for those who've never thought about anything deeper than what to nail on friday.

Extremes as in we don't allow anything related to religion in public schools. Yeah.

So it's like france then.

Well, I think it's important to learn things about other people's beliefs. If you don't, they just appear creepy and different. Also, the only thing you know is what the paper writes about it. Some mormon does something like combo-marriage and suddenly everyone think that every mormon got 8 wives. And then they just hear more and more dirt about it and so on. It's important to battle that ignorance.
Title: Re: brb
Post by: fruckert on March 09, 2012, 06:53:58 AM
Definitely agree with your point.
While I don't think that, say, Creationist beliefs should be taught alongside evolution in science classes, simply not learning about other beliefs promotes ignorance.
And ignorance can often lead to hate, due to all that stuff that you just said.

How did this topic turn into a religious discussion?
I mean, it's a good one, but still.
"I'll BRB" to "Teaching religion in schools"
what are we, youtube?
