Title: Compilers for all your needs
Post by: Osmose on March 22, 2006, 11:35:24 PM
It'd probably be easier for people to try out programming if they had compilers to use. Here's a list of some of the best compilers for each language:

C++:  Bloodshed Dev C++ (http://www.download.com/Bloodshed-Dev-C-/3000-2069_4-10498828.html?tag=lst-0-6)
Dev C++ is kinda confusing for someone who just wants to jump into C++ programming, mostly because those who want to start up have no idea what a compiler is and why they need one. But for those who have a tutorial already, it's a great tool.

Visual Basic:  Visual Basic 2005 Express (http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/vb/)
VB Express is basically a dumbed down version of VB 6 that's up for download. Now, Visual Basic .NET has already been released and is the newest version of VB, but my expertise is in VB 6 and most of what I talk about in VB is going to be about 6. I say this because VB.NET is more akin to C++ than it is to VB, so 6 is kinda the last VB "true" VB.

Java: Java v1.4 SDK (http://java.sun.com/j2ee/1.4/download.html)
This appears to be the software development kit for Java. I have yet to try it out, considering I don't know Java, but at the bottom of the page is a link to a tutorial on using the program. Coupled with tutorials on how to learn Java, it seems this would be your best bet.

Those are the three main languages that require compilers. Others, though, like Javascript or PHP, do not require compilers, and yet are still languages that you can certainly ask about.

Oh, and speaking of PHP, if you want to test PHP scripts, you're going to have to either 1.Install PHP on your home computer (Something I have tried and failed to do), or 2.Find a host that supports PHP that you can upload your files to. I'll look around to find some free hosts that support PHP that you can use to test it out.

If you have any suggestions on languages to add I'd certainly be willing to add on to this short list.

One compiler for Java that I suggest is JCreator.  It's very easy to use and is free (at least one of the versions is).

:bend:
I'll give you credit when I make a company so huge I bankrupt tobacco firms in my spare time.

The Visual Basic Express is not VB, its VB.Net, so all the VB tutorials don't work on it.

Here is a compiler for a lot of codes, all in one :D

As well as a FREE VB Compiler, A little simpler than microsoft's version,
