Pixelheaps and Soundspasms

desiderata:
Until I get a good start on a project, I will be using this thread to show y'all what I can do as far as music and pixel art.  I've been writing music off and on for a long time, and that's kind of what I've been going to school for, but really started to pick up steam over the last few months, and I've been writing at a rate of about a track a week recently.  I've also been trying to sprite seriously since the beginning of the year, and I think I'm improving and developing a consistent style, for one of my projects at least.

Here's a little thing I wrote for a menu theme or minigame.  I didn't have a title for it until I came here and looked around, and I thought it fit pretty well.

All of All!

Some glyphs I've been working on:

Glyphs

Some enemies!  I was planning to use a DW battle layout.  Also, a lot of these are named with puns or just to be slightly ludicrous.  I have a quirky sense of humor.

Megaloctopus

Bad Hanya

Big Daddy Longlegs

Gorney the Generally Discontent

I'm not sure how sprites are gonna work yet, so I just do spreadsheets for items, following a pattern.

Helmets

Spears

Swords

Characters....

Handel Bentley

Nonna R. Beezwhacks

...And a cursor I want to use for menus and battles and anything else life requires.

Cursor Glove

Please tell me what you think!  I want to improve, and constructive criticism *coughorpraisecough* are always welcome!   I have more stuff I will put up later.  I'll probably only put up MIDI versions of songs from now on, to save some space in my DropBox.  The MP3s I just render with FruityLoops anyway, and aren't much different aside from using reverb and chorus effects to fill in the sound some.

I'm digging the sprites, it's a pleasing style you have there.

Thanks.  I was going for a sort of caricature/cartoonish look, to really exaggerate the characters and enemies.  I'd like to also do more sophisticated poses and angles later, once I have the basics mastered and build up my sprite-folio.  I have two main projects in mind right now, and these are for a kind of quirky not-quite-spoof game.  The other is more serious overall, and I've been working on developing a separate style I think will be a little more mature in appearance.  Also, sorry for the massive links, I'm still figuring out the forum code here.  I'll try and fix those real quick so they display right.

RE: I can't seem to get them to link straight to the picture files, but I at least cleaned it up a bit, and all that follows will most likely be in this format unless I figure something else out.

That's some might fine spriting right there, kiddo! I'd love to see more if you've got any :D

You working on any games at the moment?

desiderata:
Sort of.  I'm pretty busy a lot, so I haven't had a chance to get to actual production, but I've got two main concepts that are coming more into focus for me every day, kind of a planning phase right now.  I've been doing storyboards and maps and such on paper, and I started keeping a little notepad for my miscellaneous ideas such as names, mini-game ideas, and other cool stuff I want to implement later on.

Since you asked, here's a few more things.  These are some random symbols and such I did as practice when I first started spriting.

Some items a ninja character would use.
Ninja weapons

Random wall decor

I love Battle Arena Toshinden for the GB, so I experimented one day with the style and this is what I got.
Chick
If I were in BAT

This was my first attempt at another style for my second game idea, a little more mature, anatomically correct, and consistent in shape, whereas the first was supposed to be more like caricatures.  My plan is to have about five or six templates for different body shapes and build around those, using different hair styles and outfits to splice and make many different sprites with the same style.

Helena

This girl is one of the main characters, Helena.  She is a tough, strong-willed woman with a wicked sense of humor and deep love of blades and the sea.  She hails from a Grecian-like nation in the south sea, the daughter of a wealthy imperialistic merchant, but after her father tried to essentially sell her through marriage, she ran from home, changed her clothes for rags, dyed her hair, and stowed away on the closest trireme.  After several years of seafaring, she ended up on the Widow's Bounty, an all-female crew where she learned to fight as well as rig a ship.  She attaches herself to the group later in the game when they seek passage to another country, but are swept up in a storm and the ship sinks.  Having nothing left to return to, she helps one of the party members find passage back to their destination and decides to stay on with them.
