Title: Junk Bin
Post by: Drace on July 16, 2005, 04:56:39 PM
I find it a good idea, but why?

We need a place for all junk to go to.

Eventually over time it will be deleted, as in the junk in it. Think of it as a recycling bin. Some people might see the idiotness they've made and such.

So you can either learn from it, or ignore it; depends on how your mind  sees it.

Ah, so it's kinda an 'anti-spam/flame' phycology thing?

Depends on how you see it.

For some it might just be where all locked thingd go to.

This is a brilliant idea, as it allows us to get rid of spam (out of sight, out of mind) and eventually delete it, and allow someone to see why their topic was locked.  Yes, some people actually think that their topic consisting of this:

"IHATE ____!  HESH A PRIC, ............................................................. .......................................................................................................... .......................................................................................................... .........................................................................................................."

Is okay and honestly don't know why it was locked.  In my opinion, it should be deleted, but this is a great way to let those spam-happy individuals see what they did wrong, and get rid of stupid crap.

Also, everyone will be able to see an example of what will get your topic locked.

I come back for a little bit to find... Yay! New forum!

Eh... but I dont really like the idea..

First of all, just the name. "Junk Bin". Ok, that'll make the forum look good. Second of all, we're putting all the content that you've locked so that we could end the discussion (and forget about it), and we cant reply to it if we have a view on it, so why bother? Third, I can see what you mean by a place to learn from, but we already have the rules on the forum index, a sticky in the all of all, and even a rules forum. Do we really need more examples? And my last argument would be, have you looked at the mod/admin logs lately? Literally hundreds of pages of mod actions, a majority of them lockings. That forum is going to quickly fill up and take up space, and I dont think anyone is going to sift through pages and pages of closed topics that they cant reply to. Kinda cancels out the "example" reason to have it.

Thats just my ideas. If you really think it helps the forum in some way, then do what you wish.

Appperantly regardless of these 'many examples' there is still a lot of people not following these examples. So it really does help for that, or it might not.

It's called reflection asa, not 'let's post again and make up for it'. People will see and either ignore it, or will reflect on it and learn something.  There's no need to posts to reflect or ignore.

Yes I've seen the log file,  most of the new actions are by me  because I've been moving locked threads around forums to the junk forum, then when I move them, there's a bug that makes them re-open, meaning I have to re-lock them again. Making it look like I am going like lock frenzy.

So indeed; things in it will be delted eventually so there isn't a problem.

I wouldn't say it's revolutionary, but it can't hurt :)

I think it´s just fun to see all the fights and flaming and such. Other than that, plain useless, since nobody will really learn from that. MOst people come to the forum assholes, same way they leave the forum: as assholes. I people do not listen to a hundred members saying "do not topic kick", "no flaming", "no spamming" (whatever this means), why would they bother looking at the bin to search for their rotten past? They´ll laugh at that and find themselves funnier than ever...

The trash bin is in many communities.

Lots of succesful communities and it also has been in bad communities.
It's not something original so I have no idea of what you speak.

And again, off-topic is not being on topic... you are reffering to off-topic as spam. Off-topicness does not equal spam! < this statement is off-topic but it is not spam! YOu are confusing yourself.

And waht is this wild-west crap?

The Junk Bin isn't creating any more new locked threads. Those threads would have been (and were) locked for good reasons. Since no one can reply to them anyway, there is nothing for them to do in All of All (or wherever they were origionally from) except slowly sink to the bottom of the forum list. Thus the bin clears out dead topics will still keeping them some place so that they could be read for amusement's sake.

I don't have any fantasies that the Junk Bin will help educate people on why topics were locked. Threads have been locked for months now, and people still break the very same rules. The Junk Bin likely won't change all that. But it is good for a few laughs while keeping the other forums clean.

Not every "n00b" who comes here as a moron will necessarily stay a moron forever.

How do I know? Well, I was one of those "annoying n00b" types once (a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...), though not on this message board.

Some people do change. The problem is... most of them don't (or they WANT to act stupid, in many cases--yes, people actually do that, especially on the internet).
