Title: GTA Rpg
Post by: byrdbrayn on July 17, 2005, 03:46:05 AM
Fantasy RPGs with warriors and dragons are nice, but they come standard. There will always be games like this availible. I thought it would be cool to make a urban combat/adventure RPG kind of like GTA.

There's 2 ways it could go....

1. It is a fangame, called GTA Rpg, meaning it can have characters and weapons and locations from the GTA series, but it will only be a fangame.

2. It is just a game LIKE GTA, but not under the name GTA, meaning it can explore completely new things, but cannot have too much in common weith GTA.

.....then again, it could be exactly like GTA, just not called GTA.......

Yea. Anyways........its debatable as to whether or not this would be possible, but I thought it through, and I think it would. I will explain:

CBS: Obiously, the weapons would be guns. Initially, the player would get a shot. Then, like the bars in Final Fantasy, you would have to wait till you "filled back up" the bar to shoot again. This would be called reload. During this time there would be a reload animation. Certian weapons would take longer to reload. Ex. Rocket Launcher. There would also be a certain amount of shots before the reload. Rifles and such would get one. Assault rifles and any automatic would get a 2 or 3 bursts. A handgun might get 2 or 3. Between shots, unlike a normal Rpg, the player could change targets. During battle, you could cycle through weapons, just like in GTA, so you wouldnt have to use the same one the whole battle.

CMS: Obiviously, the game needs a CMS. The meanu would hold stats, just like GTA, and maybe ammunition management and stuff. Maybe there could be some sort of potion-like thing you could carry, instead of finding one in the street.

Driving: This would be the most difficult part of the game to incorporate, but it is very important. Traffic patterns and stuff would be.......ugh. Each car would take up 6 blocks or spaces or w/e. Ex.

[   ][   ]
[C][   ]    Car facing up ^
[   ][   ]

*C indicates where the car would be controlled from. Oviously, the drivers seat will be here.

From the side:

[   ][C][   ]       Car facing >
[   ][   ][   ]

About 20 types of cars would be sprited. Just for this game, there wouldn't be any big cars or 18 wheelers and such. It would be too hard.

I will include a crappy car sprite I made in about 30 seconds to give you a picture of how big cars would be. Motorcycles would also be a possibility.

Now how would you drive?

I was thinking you use the direnctional buttons to move, but how would you increase speed? There would be a variable. Every second, it would -1. Every button press, it would +1. 0=Decrease speed +1. 1=Increase speed +1. =Increase speed +2. Etc. To go fast, you would pound the Enter or Space button.

Clothing Customization (like in San Andreas): This would be easy. The hardest part would be spriting the clothes.

Gyms, Karate Dojo, etc.: Places like gyms could increase defense. Maybe there could be some sort of place to learn special moves, or target practice minigames to improve accuracy. The possibilities are endless.

NPC Interation. Every time you approach an NPC a menu would pop up. TALK - FIGHT - ANYTHING ELSE. There would be many NPCs.

Map: Except for going in stores, the entire game would be on one map. Possibly there could be common things in chipsets so the chipset could be changed without the player knowing. If not, then there could be border checkpoints or something.

Police: A variable for crime. Easy. Stars come up in the corner like GTA, or any other symbol. A police swith could be turned on which means all the nearby police would pursue the character and engage in combat.

Walkman: I was thinking it would be cool the player could have a walkman-like thing in the menu and could choose to play any midi. Midis could be purchased or something. Maybe there could be record stores.

Gang Territory/Combat: This could be a central part of the game, with a Suikoden-like base cutomization.

I'm sure there are other things that I am forgetting, but I think it is obvious that it would be very possible to make an RPG version of a GTA-like game. Tis game would take alot of help though. The reason I am posting this is I know i could not make this by myself. If anyone wants to help then post here. If nobody wants to help than this thread might as well be locked because there is no way I could make a game like this by myself. There would need to be people who could:

sprite clothes (mod characters)
sprite cars
help make the cms
help with character design
help find midis/make custom midis
help with making a trafic system
and much more

This would not be even like you were helping. This would be like a full time part of the game. Meaning: It would be a cooperitive effort with no one person in charge. If anyone is interested please tell me.

Thanx.

I don't mean to soun dumb but why make it an RPG when it's already a great game, with great graphic's and such, even though you probblly won't call it GTA, it will be alot like it.

Yes it is a great game, and I understand what you mean. I also realized I would receive plenty of criticism for wanting a *gta-like* game.

The reason I want to make this game is I want an alternative RPG. Basically, there are 3 types of RPG's out there, Fantasy (ex. FF9, Legend of Dragoon, etc.), Futuristic (ex. Xenosaga), and Strategy/Tactical (ex. FF Tactics). These games are great, and they are the most practical type of games to be RPGs. (what I mean by "RPG" is menu based combat)

What I want to do is offer an alternative RPG to the generic RPG.

I'm glad some people want to help. Thank you anyone who volunteered.

I have a bunch of great new ideas for driving, but I don't have time right now to post them.

I would like to make a demo for this game, but what I mean by demo is just a game which shows all the different aspects and things you can do in the game. After I release this demo, I may be able to gather more help. ;D

What I do need is some help with the storyline.

Main Character:

Should he be a gangsta type like CJ, or an italian mafia type? Or maybe the player should be able to shape him and he will start out as a nobody?

Gangs:

Hmm......obviously I want to include the basic: a strong mafia and a strong "gangsta" presence like the ballas. Maybe a sofisticated Asian mafia like the Triads as well............suggestions?

City Name/Location:

I have nothing so far.....help?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

PLEASE, YOU CAN HELP MERELY BY SUGGESTION!!!
I WILL CONSIDER EVERYONE'S OPINION!
PLEASE SUGGEST!!!

oh and PS maxine: I am borrowing a FF CBS from someone who offered it and I will convert it to a gun-based CBS. So really, it already exists, it just needs some changes. It woun't be quite like GTA, as it will still be menu based. It will just be more hands on and realistic.

For the gangs, have a gang for like each major Race.
For the main character, it's up to you. Whatever fits the game better.
For the City, I think there should be the City and Country so it's not all City. I don't have a name.

Good luck with everything.

Ah ok i get it. And i made a GTA game but it didnt include any gun shooting which was kinda GAY. I just made some people walk around randomly. Then i made custom movement for the cars... It failed so i threw it away. And i think it will be hard too find a chipset that u can use.. Thats what i always have problem with, but maybe you have luck or skills too find/create one. Anyways i will look after this thread

I suggest that everything the character says is a choice box, with more than one option. Therefore the character is the player. To fit this theme, he should really start off as a nobody.

The box thing is a good idea. And i totally agree when starting as nobody. Like cliché you work real dirty from beginning with lousy payment etc. Then you go up and gain respect.

Maybe you could use some kind of respect system. But this game will be hard too create and i will FOR SURE be here and give you whatever info etc, i can give.

Hey thanx.

Yea I really like that idea where you can choose whqat the character says every time he talks.

I already have some reat chipsets, and I had a good idea. I could make the chipsets have something in common so when you get to a certain point I can make a *on hero touch* change chipset. Since the chipset has some tiles in common the player wouldn't notice, and the game would still be able to have different looking buildings.

maxine, the link i gave you, above each link there is an explaination on how to navigate the sites.....but here i will give you a link anyway lol:

oops the site wont allow links because it actually changes page without changing pages....its hard to explain.

ok heres directions: go to teddy plaza from the link i provided. click other. then click the first thing. then click the second thing. you will now be brought to a page with many links in the middle. cycle down through them and you will get pictures of chipsets. when you see one you like click the text above it and it will take you to the actual chipset

o and pythis thanx i appreciate ur help n i will definately ask you for storkline help after i finish with the basic programming.

by the way maxine, from what you said in the pokemon thing, you seem to be good with the programming. could you maybe help if i get stuck?
