Title: The Hidden Village
Post by: AsakuraHao2004 on August 03, 2005, 11:06:31 PM
My new game idea. Please note that all names of all people, places, and things are pending including the game title.

There is a small village hidden far from civilization, at the foot of a large mountain. Inlayed into this mountain is a very exclusive academy. Only those with exceptional skill or potential are invited. In this academy, "students" are tought in several arts and styles of combat and fighting. The school's main focus is stealth, speed, flexability, and how to use your chi.

Upon graduation, the student is taken high up into the mountain, and given a "final test", a test of their skills, wisdom, and courage customized especially for the students abilities by the instructors. To pass, only 80% is needed, because no one has ever gotton higher than a 90% on their final test. (It's hard =P) That is, except for one special case...

You start the game as a teenage boy(I know, cliched, so sue me. Besides, it's pending, it might change). Although you don't understand why, as of how you're a very quiet, even secluded young boy with no real strength, you recieve an invitation to the academy. The letter tells you to be on the next plane to the mountains. Although your parents won't allow you to go at first, you sneak out and leave anyway. Eventually, you make your way through the mysterious village, and find the academy.

In th school, you hear of this rumor going around. A few years ago, a boy named Kristoph passed his final test with a 98% but only because he played around and went a few minutes over his time limit. Kristoph also had a brother named Harley, who was said to be stronger than him, and all of the instructors. However, both of them fled when Kristoph got angered and killed an instructor. The two ran off and was never heard from again. However, the instructors deny that any of this ever happened...

How's about it? I have an idea of where I want the game to go from there, but that's the basic intro. I'm working on sprites right now, so I'll keep you updated.

If you have anything you'd like to add/change/say about this story then please do.

so... uumm... whats the game about, like are YOU the hero gonna chase that Kristoph and kill him just cuz escaped?.. Whats the heroes mission, what will the quest be about?

Post by: DragonBlaze on August 04, 2005, 01:17:26 AM
I like it so far. But I would avoid the hero just recieving a random letter. I'm sure you have a reason, but it would appear random for a while untill the true reason is revieled.

Maybe get the hero into a predicament, someone from the acadamy sees him work it through, and recommends him to be a student. That way the game will start off with a bit of action too which is always good. Oh, if you did have a secret reason you can still have it, you know, have the head guy tell you with his dying breath, "you were choosen long before [such and such]" :-p, or however you want to do it.

Actually, its something like that. You know how it said people with exemplary skills or potential? Well, yeah, they somehow knew this.

And no Maxine. Theres plenty of twists. I dont wanna give too much away, but Kristoph and Harley actually play a smaller part than you may think... or a bigger part.. it depends how you look at it.

I'm working on their sprites, so Ill post them when I finish.

Hmm.... something happened last time....

Anyways, here's the right verion of Kristoph's set. I'll add poses as/if needed.

If you finish it, ill play... S'cool concept, ready for tons of twists and such, leaves the whole story open and yet not completely random.

Thank you all. I think I will release a demo sometime....

Anyways, I have a screen. This is the main character's house. Note that it's void of people as of yet because I have yet to make them. I will soon work on a custom set for the hero, and will probably generate and complete resource some townspeople. Once I do, I will give you some screens from the first town.

Heh, forgot the image last time.

Ok, here's the main character Julius. He was born an albino, but he dyed his hair, and since it was originally white, pretty much any color he puts in it would turn our great. He opted for this aqua-ish blue-ish thing..

Now Im working on townspeople, and I will have screens of the first town very shortly.

And why would he (OR I) be banned if we are not doing anything foolish?

YOU are the only one posting something foolish.

Well, its the mac and blue of a "poor" town... see, there IS an underground spring that the town's water supply company extracts and distributes even through the town, seeing as how it's so precious..

Ok, one thing to say "You suck...Really really bad." Sorry but it had to be said.

Ask was nearly banned (unfairly i think, but im not going to make a think about it) due to his involvments with Raffles, as Rafles is gone he has a chance to get "better" so to speek, and so he WONT be banned, unless he does something worth banning for. being almost banned is a punishment, not a warning.

Also, Great screen shots.

Post by: AsakuraHao2004 on August 16, 2005, 05:00:55 PM
Alright, I have just finished the first cave/dungeon. Here are some screens..

Sometime soon... like, today maybe, I have to work on the rest of the first town. Comments welcome.

The cave looks like some sewers...or some really huge bottom-well. The maps are rather empty, probably on purpose.

Your town, on the other hand, is well-done. Looks poor and a bit swampish...but have you ever saw a rich swamp town, lol

I will play it if you complete it.

as blk skull said: the dungeon looks pretty empty, did you make it large :D.. Cuz i wouldent like just running through a dungeon:P.. But the game looks good mate, keep it up

About the dungeon, It's supposed to be small and empty because it's just the cities' underground water tunnel. See, the town's water that flows through it is all dirty swamp water, so they have to get their fresh water from underground. It's a very small tunnel (an intro place, a very empty corridor, a water flow place, and 2 puzzle rooms). Its empty because there's not a whole lot people want to put down there. It's almost a sewer, thank goodness the water is filtered.

the screens are a little wide and empty

How's this one? Been working on this sceen all night. Now I have to do the village, inner mountain, school, and upper mountain. Then possibly a demo.

Title:
Post by: Robotam on August 17, 2005, 09:45:39 AM
I liked the mapping was a lot better in the poor village, the last screen looks quite odd.
It's a mountain top, righto? It's cool in one way because it looks like one of those areas they could dream of.

The dungeon looks empty but I still liked the last screenshot of it.

Looks like a nice game. Keep it all up and make sure you release it.

Updates:

-Transitional Scene (from starting village to Hidden Village) complete
-Work on Hidden Village (the town, name pending) started

Will have screens when village is done.

IF there's gonna be a demo, this is about the 25 - 30% mark.

Although I haven't seen or read alot of it, the plot seems like Naruto to me... But I do like the mapping.

Post by: AsakuraHao2004 on August 23, 2005, 02:40:36 AM
It's nothing like Naruto. The game isn't based on the title, that would be silly. There's only 1 hidden village, and technically, it's not "Hidden" at all, although it is out of the way and no roads lead to it. Not to mention it's hundreds of miles away from civilization, and the only thing between them is snow, and it's high up in some mountains.

But of course, I wouldn't want to call my game the "Not Quite Hidden, but Still Hardly Accesable Village"

I'd definetley play it if it had that title.

That sounds like something out of Monty Python.

Behold, the Hidden Village.
But I saw it from the road
Yes but it is rather hard to get to.
Well I say, theres a path down to it!
Yes, but that path is ridden with snakes
Thats not a snake, thats a garden hose
But you could get tangled in it.
I believe you'd have to be rather clumsy to get tangled in that.
Not when it is spraying water
I do see how you could slip and fall.
Indeed, so behold the Not Quite Hidden, but Still Hardly Accesable Village
But you said it was the Hidden Village!
No, I clearly said Not Quite Hidden, but Still Hardly Accesable Village
(This could go on for awhile so I'll stop)

I say go for it!

Hmm... that name really dosent create the appeal I wanted, but if it's what the people want, then re-name the game I shall.

If you name it that then you might ruin the entire 'serious' concept to the game, although it would rocketh the ***.

I'm thinking about some kind of guitar sidequest... or something. Become a master shredder. It's all fuzzy... I'll think of someway to incorperate it.
Title:
Post by: ZeroKirbyX on August 25, 2005, 06:50:54 AM
Maybe you make instrument items that you can equip, and the longer you have it equipeed, the better they get at their instrument. If the have a guitar for ever, then they become like a Class A and in pubs you can perform and the higher everyones overall instrument level the more you get paid for the gig.
Title:
Post by: AsakuraHao2004 on August 25, 2005, 07:32:58 AM
I was thinkig of something like that... a career where you get better and better and learn new songs. The hard part about that is you actually play the songs (midi form) and midis can only be assigned as Background music, so I have to time the "wait" event just right. Also, if a person open another window while playing, it completly ruins it..

But gamewise, it'll probably be soemthing like this:

The hero can chose to learn guitar at some point in the game. If he does, different, and better guitars become availiable through shops, minigames, side-quests (yes, sidequest within the sidequest), etc. He learns and gets new guitars as the game progresses. He can do everything from get gigs in small town pubs to enter a guitar-playing tournament (and how I plan to make that work, I have NO idea).

In the end, I want it to play some major roll... just a lot of uncertanty in my sidequests...

The game sounds sweet so far, although you've told us very little, really.

THe guitar sidequest sounds cool, you could use lots of guitar string sound effects and key input processing! :)  If you did that It'd be awesome.

I agree that the dungeon is a little empty. Although It's only meant to be a sewer, I suggest adding some of this stuff: (There's bits of rock and things that would go quite well)

Obviously I didn't make it.
Title:
Post by: AsakuraHao2004 on August 25, 2005, 06:03:27 PM
I hate that set, and it saved my life! None of the maps ever have enough/the right items. I guess I could put some stuff in the dungeon-y sewer-y place, but overall I want a feeling of abandoment of it.

That guitar idea sounds too much like the ocarani from Zelda... or the Guitar in Majora's mask... or whatever it was wherever it was. I'm going for something less complicated. Basically I ripped the solos from midis and you play those.

I'm thinking maybe a system where if you play the right song in the right place something happens, OR, the more songs you learn, the more songs become availiable, and there's a speacial song you can learn once you have acquired all of them, which will open the door to a secrete cave...

or something.

Double postin', w00t.

Preview of the CMS. It's extremly simple. Text and menu made 100% custom by me... well, some else invented the text, but I made it into a charset! =)

With that CMS you'd have an event for every item, right?
Title:
Post by: AsakuraHao2004 on August 25, 2005, 11:29:34 PM
Yes, switched on if it's variable is over 1, and the number corresponds to that. To make things easier on my and save space, the max you can carry of anything is 9.

I have items broken down into 2 sections, Key Items (non-usable, game-relevent) and Game Items, usable ones.  Almost every Game Item needs its own variable, and almost ever Key Item needs it's own switch, but the opposite isnt true.

Plus I have "Equipment", but that's rather different.
Title:
Post by: AsakuraHao2004 on August 26, 2005, 05:55:48 AM
More double postin, hell yeah!

Anyways, I think I have more of an idea for the guitar quest.

There's 1 point in the game where you can chose if you want to take the path of a musician. If you pass it up, there's no way to get it back unless you play the game again. Anways. If you DO chose to become a musician, you "learn" by people playing them, and that determines your skill level. There are 9 skill levels, tought by different people, and what you can learn depends on what guitar you have:

(Level - Sub-level {guitar required to learn}

-Rythm - Absolute Beginner {Acoustic}
-Rythm - Intermediate {Acoustic}
-Rythm - Advanced {Electric}

-Lead - Beginner {Electric, Ibanez GRX20}
-Lead - Intermediate {Ibanez GRX20}
-Lead - Advanced {Ibanez JEMBRMR}

-Shred - Beginner {Ibanez JEMBRMR}
-Shred - Intermediate {Ibanez JEMBRMR}
-Shred - Advanced {Gibson Flying V}

Once complete a level you can learn a solo, once once you have all 3 solos, you can play a hidden level that's only accesable if you chose the path of a musician and got all 3. In this level (it'll probably be a really cool cave, I'm gonna make finding all these guitars and people to learn form hard) you have a chance to get a rare 1971 Sunburst Stratocaster and with that, you can learn one final solo.

What's the point, you ask? To get a 100% and the "Good ending" version of the game, of course. =P Plus the hidden cave will kick ***, I garuntee it.

I'm curious to see if these systems turn out right or not ^^
