Title: Guide to Easy Game Making
Post by: oooog on August 05, 2005, 12:56:59 AM
Ok, for those of you "I need inspiration to make my game", I've created an easy do-it-yourself guide.

Coming up a Plot
1.) If your feeling lazy, rip off another game's plot and twist it up to make it seem like your own.  I'm not saying this will make a good game, but, if you cannot come up with anything, use this one.

2.) Make it up as you go along.  Start off with something, then just keep making it up as you go along.  This strategy is good for making a comedy RPG.

There aren't really many ways to come up with a good plot, but those are some of the best ways I can think of.

Coming up with an Appearance
1.) Read 1.) above and replace plot with character.

2.) Relate the characters style of clothing to the times.  It's only natural to have say the main character have old-timey armor or clothing during say a medieval (sp?).  You wouldn't make the main character wear a spacesuit.  Unless your making a comedy game and making the main ironic.

3.) Make the main characters clothing stand out so he is easily distinguished from the other characters

Coming up with All the Above
1.) Do something extremly boring, and try to think about Game Making.  For instance, I did a 2 mile run, and I thought up this thread idea to pass the time.

Feel free to add other Game Making suggestions.

Here's something I just thought of:

If you want to be original and have your game liked, stay away from "collect the crystals/spheres/(insert-mythical-object-here)." This was first used way back in Final Fantasy I, and there have been countless duplicates.

That's all I have to say to add on.

One of the best places to come up with ideas is in the bathroom.

So I bet if you take exlax, you'll come up with all sorts of ideas  :D

Seriously though, when thinking of a game, you don't have to figure out every detail of the game before you start, but you should have the basic plot all thought out. You can tell most games that are being made up as they go because they're just too random.

And my final little tip is about game legnth. A lot of people make a bunch of maps and have the hero wip through them all. Thus theres a lot of  work, but not a lot of gameplay. It is a good idea to have the character go back and forth a while to differant areas instead of going to new areas all the time. And also, each town should have an event in it that requires you to search the town or at least walk around it. Having the player explore the town will add to game legnth, it'll allow the character to get a feel for the world, and it'll just add to the feel of the game.

I can't believe I forgot this one.  When making a game, and you think up an idea that will stray a little from your original plot, do not use it.  This has destroyed a countless number of my games.  One new idea leads to another, which leads to another, which leads to another, and so on and so forth.  Eventually, your making 2 games in one, then, if you try splitting them, it becomes way too confusing.

Good idea's all, keep em coming.  Hopefully newcomers will read this and stop posting "I can't come up with anything for my games." threads.

That's actually one of my views of gamemaking. The way I look at it, a town isn't just a rest stop; you need to do things there to progress the story.

yes... Example, entering the town.... The exit is blocked during a thief walking around the town. The guards wont move untill this thief is caught. You need to get pass the exit fast, you have an adventure too finnish. Now you need too get the thief. This was an example for some kind of step a side thing in a game. Grandia 2 is a good example for exploring town game.

Might have been, but its a well known fact that you think better while sitting on the pot. Not many people like to think about whats currently going on while they go...

Oh, and heres a great tip for making a game, have a great work enviornment. If my room smells like dirty cloaths and moldy food and if the floor isn't visable, then I won't work on my game as much as if my room was clean and smelled fresh. Another factor for me is my monitor, if I had a monitor that didn't blur everything together and hurt my eyes, I would probably use rm2k3 a lot more.

The whole "thinking on the pot concept" is linked to the do something boring to start coming up with thoughts for one thing.  I mean, why do you start coming up with ideas on the toilet?  Because, unless you think poo-ing is interesting, you start thinking of other things to pass the time.  If you can focus on one thing, you can come up with some amazing thing.  Personally, I think running is the best way because your getting in shape, and coming up with ideas, all at the same time.
