Some if not most of u may know this already, but this tutorial is especialy good for people new to rpg maker but want to have a better battle system. Many people try to make a CBS where the character runs up to the monster and attacks it, well it can be done wit the regular 2k3 DBS.
1) Go to the database
2) Go to items and make a weapon.
3) Below animation, NOT attack animation, click set.
4) On movement before attack it will have none as default. Change it to 'Move to target'.
-You can add an after image if u want.
-For magic attackes it'd be best to have them jmp forward.
So now you have a battle system that is more realistic and better looking. But the sprites and lack of frames for good and fluid animation may still make it look bad. Well you can still have better sprites for yur stance, attack, victory, etc. And also have longer, bigger, and much more fluid sprites too. To do this it involves quite some work. Creating a battle animation, or if your making a fan game, ripping sprites or looking for them.
1) Get battle animation sheet of sprites u want to use.
2) Go to data base and create your animation.
3) Go to Animations 2
4) Select a character, Male hero, female hero, or create a new one.
5) Go to animatino type.
6) than select battle animation insted of character pose for Animation type.
Vuah-LAH! u got a good looking battle system. But tats jus the basics, there are still more to do but you should get the idea by now, I hope. I will post some screens of wat i did.

Size doesnt matter as long as u can fit it onto a battle animation sheet.
