Title: Sony's gonna beam images into your brain!
Post by: DragonBlaze on September 08, 2005, 10:28:48 PM
This is kind of old news, but I don't know if many people know abotu it yet. Anyway, Sony is planning on making a device that uses some sort of waves to 'beam' images and other sences into you're head. In short, it will be a virtual reality unlike any other. It would also be used to let blind people see and stuff like that too (it it works that is).

The last I heard Sony got a patant from the FDA or some other organization, but they haven't run any tests on it yet, so it may turn out to be a complete faluir.

I've heard some people worry about getting a virus or their brain crashing, and even getting the blue screen of death :p. Anyway, it would be imposible to download stuff into your brain, you would act more like a monitor, the signals would be sent to you, and you interperate them. So any error wouldn't harm you at all. Cancer is also another worry with some people, as far as we know though, the signals are way too weak to cause any damage, but now a days almost anything can cause cancer.

Anyway I was just wondering what people think of this :)

If you want to find out more info, just search google for 'sony beam brain info' and something should turn up :p

no...very doubtful...well, it'll be very hard to sell because, I remember when they made Virtual Boy, and a lot of people were having seizures. The same thing will happen with this.

Seizures, eh?
Title:

alright... this sounds kinda risky ya know... one error and it might fry your brain... (I bet thats the plan too...)
Cool though, very :D

Like I said earlier, it would be imposible for something to be downloaded into your brain. So no mind controll, no brain crashes, and it should be pretty safe. Seizures might be a possibility, but I doubt it. Virtual boy had a screen an inch away from your face, this will be like you're actually seeing the enviornment.

You know what would really suck, if someone hacked your ps9 and you get spam beamed into your brain.

Kirsty Alley losing weight...
Aren't these signs of the apocalypse?
Title:

I heard Kirstie Alley is now down to twice the weight of her Cheers days.

Sony is the second friendliest company of the 3 big video game companies, they would never take over the wooorld.

If this device is created we can expect that people will hack and change this device so that it can control your mind and use you for their own good or terrorism. But I'm willing to take that change just as long I can play Virtual Reality MGS, RE, Silent Hill, Doom 3, Far Cry and more like that.

Brain Control. The use of microwaves to control one's thoughts. Psyco Acoustic Correction. Russia has it, and probably many more..

I know that the U.S. military is researching Psycic abilities like Telekinesis, Pyrokinesis, Mind Control and many more.

Nope, don't like the idea. Why? The mind should not be tinkered with in such a way. But the use of giving blind sight is somthing I'm willing to support.

So I'm not the only one who remembers the PS9 commercial?  Sony better get CRACKIN'.

You can't hack a brain.
You can't control a brain.

Brains are simply a grouping of quarks to particles, particles to atoms, atoms to molecules, molecules to cells, cells to nerves, and nerves to a brain.  Nerves store "memory" in "hard space" just like computers; but holding electrons in a single place.  They can store electrons in the short term memory (RAM) just like computers.  So good luck rearranging individual quarks, electrons, positrons, and photons.  That'd be the only method of brain control or hacking.

Meh, even if it gets made it'll be 1000+ dollars. And the possability of it actually working is very low. And even so, many of us are not willing to give up a screen and controller.

Plus the quality of the images is neglible. They may even be crappy, and how do you take screenshots of somthing that is in your head!?

Possabilities are that it may be a hoax.

Or it might not. Maybe it won't create images as of yet, but I see a good chance of it being able to reproduce smells. It will only be a while before it can actually create images.
Title:
Post by: Darkfox on September 10, 2005, 02:39:02 AM
Even if images are created, the quality will be very blurry and poor. The mind has to go through many filtering processes to produce what you see, if it is beamed directly, which is unlikely to be done, it will still be among the most horrid quality. And your head has no focus or tone modifiers. Think on that for a while.

Smells would be stimulateing the receptors inside the nose, but I doubt you guys would want to have wires up your nose would you? Especially with the mucus and booger buildup.

So in truth this bay be a big hoax, a cleverly crafted joke. Such technology does not and might not ever exist at our slow rate of technological growth. Heck, we still have no alternative fuels, our toys still have the scratchy voiceboxes or are made of simple plastics and we still have handheld games that are no more than black non-colored images imbedded like a calculator screen.

Note: No matter how much I search, there is nothing about this on Sony's official website... funny.

Warxe: I think someone said something about Sony patenting the PS9, but I can't find anything about that in the US or Japanse patent offices.

Another oddity.

If you look at it as atomic structures. I believe however that we are vibrating evergy. But that's another discussion.

Many people have no idea what electric impulses can do to a brain. With messages (kill the president) encoded in a low-frequency microwave and pinpointed into the brain, or, as I have read in some advanced models anywhere on the body, your brain would recieve that message. This is old news however, I'm sure they've deveolped ways to not only talk to you, but to send impulses that compell you to do what you're told.

Well its not a hoax, its been posted at many trusted news sites such as cnn.com. Its only in the idea stage though of production though.

It won't put images in your brain really like a 1024 x 768 projection, it'll be more like you're actually in a differant environment. And images aren't the only sences you could recieve either.

Anyway, I'm all for this, maybe in 50 years when it comes out, I'll buy one. I'll wait 5 years or so to see if it has any problems first :p

Anyway, I'm all for this

I'm against it except for the helping the blind part. Why? Think about it, your the monitor, directly to the brain, seizures are a risk and there are numerable effects it could have on variable people. You keep to your technology fantasies, but maybe we should actually know our limits and be happy for what we've got rather than praising what is still questionable without actually knowing what it does.

Additionally it could be one of the biggest hoaxes out there, there is no OFFICIAL record, thus the transaction may have never happened. All I see is posts of forums and a few mentions, nothing more.

In any case, a good quality TV and sound system is all I need, be happy with what you got, ungrateful kids these days...  :p

Advantages:

-No need to buy a monitor.
-May help the blind and those with bad eyesight.

Disadvantages:

-Quality will fluxuate, may be blurry, mirrored, or overall screwed up
-Can't take screenshots
-The ability to look away will not work
-Your head has no adjustments like a monitor does
-You can't see the controller, and if you control with hands how do you perform the funny cheats like BIG HEAD MODE!?
-Might lose interest over short time
-Will cost alot
-Functionability would most likely not work 100%
-How can you see stuff around you? Your physically vulnerable! Easy prey for robbers and serial killers.
-Spam evolution
-Mostly science-fiction based

Just too add to what DF said...

Advantages:

-No need to buy a monitor. - Well that's great, I mean, Most people who could afford one of these WOULD ALREADY HAVE A TV.

-May help the blind and those with bad eyesight. - Ok, That's alright, I suppose...

Disadvantages:

-Quality will fluxuate, may be blurry, mirrored, or overall screwed up - You'ed be better off watching an old black &white TV with this (|  |) size screen.

-Can't take screenshots - Yeh.

-The ability to look away will not work - Yeh, that's a point, you couldent have a group of friends all crouded round a TV playing a game, Cus it woudlent work.

-Your head has no adjustments like a monitor does - Heehe, I could imagion someone trying to find the right place to stand in his house, trying to get a better signel. X.x

-You can't see the controller, and if you control with hands how do you perform the funny cheats like BIG HEAD MODE!? - Dude, If it was on the PS2 controlers I never look at the anyways, i mean, most people can play without looking at the controlers at all. I know I can.

-Might lose interest over short time - True. You'ed have to play on your own which would be boring.

-Will cost alot - Way too much.

-Functionability would most likely not work 100% -Exactualy.

-How can you see stuff around you? Your physically vulnerable! Easy prey for robbers and serial killers. - Dude, I have 4 BROTHERS! I'ed be dead F'sure.
-Spam evolution - Lol, I could imagion my brothers running round a room screeming "POPUP'S POPUP's!"

-Mostly science-fiction based - Yeh.

Yeah, the most a game could do for exursise would be propore technique, but you might as well go to the gym.

And to be honest, I'd like to play as Spyro, it'd be fun :D I've already been a dragon in a dozen dreams or so, and its actually pretty cool, the tail gets a little getting used to though :p I've also been a peice of paper once, all I have to say is I hope they don't make a paper mario game with something like this...

Sure I've had weird dreams. But none comes even close to your dream's weirdness. My dreams mostly are about movies I've see or things I want to do. Or jumping of a building, though I don't like that dream. I have it like once a month. Scares the heck out of me every time.
Title:
Post by: DragonBlaze on September 11, 2005, 12:24:11 AM
Well I do have a lot of normal dreams to, but I just tend to remember my wierder dreams. Plus I always remeber my dragon dreams which are pretty cool, like the time I blew up the school, or when I was scaring people around the mall, and then later on this guy pissed me off so I took a bite out of his neck (it was icky but he deserved it :yell: ), yeah they were good times. And to think with this new device I could blow up my school whenever I want :)

I dream every night, well everyone does, but I know how to remember them now. Sometimes it's pretty cool, sometimes its not..

Indeed...

Guy reads a few thing: OMG! I INSTANTLY BELIEVE IT!!

I remember that commercial, it was a joke. It's like War of the Worlds, at the time everybody believed they were being invaded by martians. They say "Ultrasonic Waves" will be the thing that triggers yatta yatta yatta, can anybody tell me what ultrasonic waves are?

Quote
We’re not going to read too much into it right now (namely because there are a lot of patents out there that have no true correlation to reality) but a Sony researcher by the name of Thomas Dawson filed patent on Sony’s behalf for a “transcranial magnetic stimulation” device that would beam sensory input to a person’s brain via ultrasonic pulses. Sony was quick to note that no experiments had been conducted with the technology—so it’s not much more than theory right now. Thanks, Sony, for making us wonder if we’re all really just brains in jars in Sir Howard Stringer’s office compound.

So there you have it. All sci-fi and theory right now.

But there's the thing - you don't know better. Until you, yourself, (and by this I mean don't go around trusting the words of people who came from the future) go into the future and come back to the present, you in reality have [GLOW]NO[/GLOW] idea what the future will hold!

hmm. so If this gives you a Vision of a game that you play, then you won't use a controler and you'll have to move your body to get somewhere. I'll make a few examples of fun games that could be made for it:

Morrowind: woo, just you try to run through the map from Khuul to Vivec :) you'll fatigue yourself to death trying.

FABLE: feel yourselfe aging from 7 to 60 on 1 day... that'll be fun

Halo: hehe, stay clear from the Granades, thats all I've gotta say

Ninja gaiden: I hope they'll make this game for the console :3
*Slash* *slash* *stab* *kick* *Ninpou: Inferno* ARGH!!! MY ORGANS!! and how are you to bend that much?

Sonic: wanna loose your legs? run full speed ^^

These are but a few examples... not that they'll make them for this console... but anyways :3

Ok, guys this is not a hoax, its been confirmed by sony. CNN, NBC, ect, aren't going to post up a news story without confirming its accuracy first. Whats up for grabs would be if this would ever become practical, sony may have only looked into it, but its not a hoax.

You're not going to be walking around with this on your head, you would be sitting there, or laying, or whatever.

Whats so differant from a tv projecting light into your eyes that you interperate as images, or waves being projected into your brain to be interperated as images. First they had the radio, then they had the tv, next they may come out with this. I completely understand people not wanting to use it, but you're making it sound like it's evil. It'll be no worse than a TV.

Personally I'd rather be doing something than pushing a button and watching some dots on a flat screen do something. I've gone snowmobiling before, and its pretty fun, I've also played a snowmobiling game, and its just nothing compared to the real thing.

Umm, I would say more, but I need to get off my compy asap cuz I'm having a thunder storm here and the power is flickering...

That doesn't matter now. All that matters now is that  IT'S STILL COLD! (http://www.charas-project.net/)

LMAO!

Do you watch the news? About a year ago, CBS go into some crap because Dan Rather rushed a stroy about Bush's military service to air without confirming the story.

In case your out of touch, the evidence turned out to be forged, and Dan Rather resigned from CBS.

So to correct you:

Exactly, when a goof does happen everyone knows about it afterwards, if Dan Rather didn't resign, I bet he would have been fired, or at least in some sort severe trouble.

Sony said they're releasing a ps3, it was on CNN before, is that a hoax too? Its not like I trust everything that is on the news, but when I find very widespread info on a variety of sources, then I believe it.

Really though, whats so hard to believe that sony is looking into this? They didn't make anything yet, they've just recieved a patent so that they can if they want to.

Well techically you would be lying, but it would be far more interactive than a regular game  _pumpkin_  <- I've never used that smilie, I just wanted to try it out :p

By lying around isn't really doing anything other than well... laying down or sitting, thus your doing nothing nor is your body, thus making that statement irrelevent.

Edit: At least with a controller your working your thumb muscles. HEY! New game idea!

"Realistic Weightlifting"

Label: "No muscles are actually built by this product."

Well, I wouldn't try that because i have a feeling that prolonged exposure will cause de-wrinkling in the brain: A process that happens slolwy and causes gradual loss of thinking capacity. And I'm practically rock bottom as it is! I don't wanna risk a prediction that I just made up with no founding forms of proof!! HELP ME!!!! WAARRRGGHHHH!!!!!
*Flings chair at window, leaps out and falls five stories from a single story house and lands on a cop precariously waiting just outside my window for some reason, killing him and surviving since the cop absorbed the shock.* :x

Are you serious? Playing a game with a controller doesn't help you're body at all :badboy: . I'd really be surprised if anyone played games because it worked their thumb muscles.

Technically I won't be there doing whatever it is the game has me doing, but my mind will say I am, and it will seem like I'm there. I would be doing the activity even if I'm laying down. Video games are a form of entertainment, and were never designed to help your fittness, I do other things for that  :)

I was just making a statement to your statement. But controllers do inspire us to use our hands to acquire faster finger motions and precision.

If my brain does turn to mush, I won't really notice. But it would be fun to buy one for an unwanted friend.... :mrT:
No body give is Midda T no 'spect...

Oh yeah. Forgot to mention but you will NOT control your character with your brain. In order to do that they would have to be:

A) Surgical receptors.
B) Sensors to detect movement and in which case would be ALL OVER YOUR BODY. And cost around an extra 500-1000 bucks.

No, you will not be "Opening your mind" to PS9!

Hey, when I see a questionable and possibly crap idea, I'm not going to suguarcoat my comments on it. So deal with my hatred towards questionable technology.

I have a bit more than your average user's knowlege on such words as "ultrasonic" and how electronics react to nervous impulses of the mind (or vice versa). I relate my knowlege to the now and the most possible tomorrow, and I have given specific examples on how this could fail, it effect, I am critiqueing it, albeit I am a bit harsh on it due to my concerns on it's effects therof on the user's brain tissue. Several issues are indeed present with this technology, one of the most minor is headaches or temporary loss of feeling in limbs due to a mistimed mechanism. Among more severe there is chances of shock or seizures.

Remember that this technology is saying that it's directly to the person's brain and that is some seriously sensitive tissue...

quite a few points to be accurate . . .

Ok. So this is all impossible. Next discussion, holographic games. Well, possible?
Title:
Post by: Darkfox on September 16, 2005, 02:54:29 PM
It's possible. It would require a means in which to materalize an image. Maybe micro lasers of variable colors. Though as lasers there runs a bit of a risk of eye injury due to one making contact to the eye, so it should be labeled that one should not try to get face to face with the holograms XD.
