Final Fantasy Premiers in Japan
Anoop Gantayat
Wed Sep 7, 8:00 PM
Following years of development time, screenings at multiple film festivals and too many trailers to count, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children has at last made its public debut. A week prior to the DVD and UMD's 9/14 Japanese release, Square Enix invited members of the Shinra fan club to the Virgin Cinemas theater in Tokyo's Roppongi party district for the Japanese premier of Advent Children on the big screen. FFVII nut that I am, I begged and begged until I was permitted to attend the screening with some six hundred eager FF fans.
The evening began at 6:00PM with the red-carpet arrival of key members of the Advent Children staff. From the film's creators, including director Tetsuya Nomura, to the voice acting staff who performed the roles for Cloud, Tifa, Aerith and the rest, Advent Children insiders posed for a photo shoot outside the theater, with a backdrop showcasing Cloud and Sephiroth, the two pivotal characters in the FFVII storyline.
Seeing the staff arrive with all the pomp of a real movie premier (especially the hot Ayumi Ito, the voice of Tifa) was fun and all, but the real reason to attend the event was to get a first look at Advent Children in full form. That's right, no more limited viewings of early rendered clips, no more trailers -- the full movie, clocking in at a final total of 100 minutes from start to finish (as Advent Children was originally being created as a 20 minute short, this is a surprising length).
But first, once everyone had taken their seats, Square Enix took the opportunity to share some trailers for upcoming games. Kingdom Hearts II, Crisis Core, Before Crisis and Dirge of Cerberus were each given a few minutes trailer time, although only the Dirge footage contained anything new. Sadly, the new footage didn't give a new look at the game's Online mode, which is set to start a beat program shortly. Also unfortunate was that Square Enix didn't show the PS3 Final Fantasy VII demo clip that was included in its Square Enix party reel from last month.
The movie kicked off following these trailers, at last taking us back to the world of Final Fantasy VII. Only things have changed since the original 1997 PlayStation title. Forget the minimal text (compounded by a translation so bad that I originally assumed it had been farmed out to cheap immigrant translators), lack of voices and big headed characters with blocks for hands. Advent Children, as you've probably noticed in all the trailers, has normal proportioned characters speaking with full voice. At last, the game's complex, adult storyline has the support of a more adult means of storytelling.
Final Fantasy VII fans have been waiting for over eight years to see what happens to Cloud, Tifa and the rest of the FFVII cast following the events of the original PlayStation title. And no, I'm not going to make the wait any shorter by revealing here what happens to them in Advent Children. I'll suggest that you brush up on the original's story before seeing the movie, though. The movie kicks off immediately after the end of FFVII, and while there is a bit of background summary at the start, if you don't know your Jenovas from your Life Streams and your Meteors from your Holys, you'll probably be lost.
The storyline of FFVII was somewhat opaque, requiring that players pay close attention to every little bit of dialogue, or risk missing far-reaching plot points (this is one of the reasons that having such a thoughtless English language version was troubling). Advent Children is more straightforward, as it attempts to answer many of the questions left from the original story while providing a more fitting conclusion. But with all the names going around and a large cast of characters, keeping up with the storyline in one viewing can be tough, especially following the eight years gap since the original.
It turns out that the movie wasn't meant to be viewed in this way. According to the staff commentary in the full-color guide booklet Square Enix handed out at the premier event, the development staff actually meant for Advent Children to be viewed on DVD or UMD, and created it with that in mind. The staff wants people to use the slow, repeat and other functions of their DVD player and PSP unit to review story elements as they go along. Advent Children is meant to be a somewhat interactive movie experience, and not a movie watched on the big screen along side hundreds of people.
In addition to backtracking through the film in order to better understand the plot, slow motion ought to help out considerably with some of the action sequences. Fights, battles and motorcycle sequences make up a good part of Advent Children, and the cinematography for these sequences is so fast that most of the time I was unable to keep track of what was happening. The movie does have its share of downright bizarre camera and editing choices, but I'm looking forward to slowing down the action sequences to see what hidden surprises await.
The big screen actually does damage to the effort that has gone into making Advent Children. The movie looks somewhat messy on a theatrical screen, with clear polygon edges on even the main characters revealing that the CG isn't in the same league of the finer CG used in full movie productions. Image quality also suffers from being blown up to giant screen proportions. On a smaller screen -- such as the PSP -- I imagine that the movie will more accurately reflect its masterful art design. A smaller screen should also make it easier to take in the fast action, even without resorting to slow motion.
Following the showing, Square Enix brought out the film's staff for a photo and commentary session. The voice actors for Cloud (Takahiro Sakurai), Tifa (Ayumi Ito), Kadaj (Shoutarou Morikubo) and Aerith (Maaya Sakamoto) commented a bit on their roles. Sakurai revealed that he loved the original FFVII game and that while this was his second viewing of Advent Children, he was able to look at it from a different perspective this time. Ito added that the film has many messages and that she hopes many people will be able to see it. Sakamoto joked that the name Aerith doesn't actually appear anywhere in the film, so she had to explain which character she played.
The big star of the night, and of most things Square Enix these days, was director Tetsuya Nomura. Combining tennis shoes and formal attire in classic Nomura style, Nomura accepted flowers from a model and brought the night to a close.
But the real Advent Children experience will begin on 9/14 with the release of the DVD and UMD. Hopefully, a full English release won't be too far beyond.
Turn the page for more pictures from the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children premier.
While Advent Children is scheduled to appear in a few movie theaters throughout Japan over the next couple of weeks, this premier event was marked by appearances by the game's voice acting and creative staff. Here are some of the additional pics we took of the premier. Remember to click on the pics for larger versions.

I wanna see!!!! DVD 9/14
I wonder if anyone will sub it or something
-
9/14? That's like 5 days?
-
No no no. You got it all wrong; I read that article and discovered that that's not the release date, but the odds that it's going to not be released here. Which ain't too good, as that means there's only a 5/14 chance of it making it over to the US.
And even if it does make it over here, It's not coming out until it's the day of my birth.
-
October. That's only a month, right?
-
no it said the DVD was coming out in Japan on 9/14... I'm hoping a subbed DVD ripped version will be soon
hmm... or Does it?
-
It'll only be out on PSP here... ugh.
-
In the USA, chances of AC being released is almost 100%. In Japan it will be released the 14th September. In Europe a release isn't confirmed.

Now that's gonna suck.

I don't care too much. All it means I'm gonna have to deal with more fanboys when I say Legend of Dragoon pwns FF7.
-
I went to bestbuy.com and searched their site for ff7: ac, and they're selling it come the 14th (or somewhere around there). So there will be a US release. I downloaded a trailer a while ago that had the release dates for the US, and Europe as well.
When I searched the site though, I only found the psp umd format movie being sold, so I don't know about a dvd. I've heard a dvd will also be released at the same time or close to it though.
-
I never played the game. lol :D
I'm not even sure if I'll watch Advent Children. This was the direction I thought Square was going when they were making Spirits Within. Unfortunately they decided to go with a fresh storyline, the movie bombed, and the CEO resigned shortly thereafter.
But I understand that FF7 is a big name. I know of some people who don't play RPGs but played and loved FF7.
-
You know what would be really really nice? If FF7AC totally ROCKED. I mean, so far all we can say is 'it's probably gonna be crap" or "they'll screw it up horribly" but, if the movie is actually really good, well then, damn, yay!

For sure.
I would really hate for another Square movie to go the way of Spirits Within. I would actually enjoy it if Square began making movies. Especially if they could successfully create a storyline to which they could create a longrunning series of sequels as Bond has.
-
Well I think the movie will be good, but not great. The story looks a little shallow, its there, but shallow. But unlike the spirits within, this game actually follows the FF concept. Theres magic, summons, kick *** fighting scenes, and some more.
But yeah, I don't see how they can make a good story for a sequal for the game, it'd be cool if they pulled it off though.
Either way I'll buy it, the scenes in it alone should be worth the money.
-
I'm pretty sure they need to do a fuckload of things to screw up Advent Children.
Let's start with this:
One of the producers or somthing already wrote a prequel to AC and at the same time a sequel to the original. Takes place between FFVII and AC. It's only a story, but it will show that the storyline this time will be great.
Next, they stay true to the game. Not just true, fully true. Like in, materia. And summon magic.
Advent Children will take you to battles with Loz, Yazoo and Kadai, and will also featuring some old Turks fighting these three. There will be a battle with a ****ing Bahamuth summon, and to top it all Sephiroth will be playing a major role, meaning a fight.
So, if that doesn't convince you that Advent Children won't be just another Square movie, I don't know.
-
Big deal. Final Fantasy VII wasn't truly that great. It was OK, but to make it into prequels, sequels and a movie? Come on..
But I have to admit it might clear things up.

Agree'D. Now if they were talking about Metal Gear Solid it would be a different story.
-
MGS for you, isn't it? lol
-
Yeah, I for one will think it won't even have the ff7 music in it (Unless Nobuo is doing it). Its just another movie. Its and action movie with cloud in it. Big deal.
-
I'm pretty sure it'll have some of the same music (although remade to sound better than it did in the game). I know I heard two differant themes from the game in trailers, I'd think they would have some of those tracks in the movie as well, maybe not.
I don't think FF7 was that hot either, but being the second rpg I played (first was super mario rpg) it was like OMG. I think FF7 was the most popular though, and thats why they're making a sequal to this one. Plus FF9 had a few multiple endings (I think), so a sequal for that wouldn't work too well. Then a lot of people didn't like FF8 as much as the other two.
Even if FF7 wasn't too hot compared to some other games, I don't think it'll bring down the movie at all.
-
It had a bonus ending, that's all I remember.
-
Just another game they are going to make into a movie and screw it up even worse in the process.
Examples:
Doom
Final Fantasy has been screwed up already
MegaMan
Resident Evil
-
There's a big list ahead of you Darkfox. And don't forget Alien vs Predator and Super Mario Bros.
EDIT: Oh, Street Fighter and Double Dragon too.
-
Alien and preditor were movies before they made a game of it though, so that really dosen't count...

nah I'm pretty sure there was a game... they had toys too or something like that in the 90's.
-
Do you all think Sephiroth will be alive in this movie?
-

Yeah there were a few games made for it, but the original alien movie came out in the late 70's, I'm not sure, but I think preditor came out in the 80's. Any games made on the two were originally based off of the movies.

Well the limited info I have on it heres what I think. If I'm right it'll be a spoiler though for you guys. ... Anyway, Sepheroth is dead, but he was made by jenova (sp?) cells. In one of the trailer clips, Vincent tells Cloud that if they (Loz and group I presume) wanted, they could make another sephiroth. I don't think they would say that, then not go through with the idea. Anyway, I think that they're either going to make a sephiroth clone, or somehow revive him.
-
DragonBlaze: Off course the Alien and Predator movies were first. But the AVP is based off the game which came later.

I think he means the series. I've looked it up, no Megaman movie.
-
If SE makes another FF movie (which they will) it should either be an original one based off of the games (not post-apolcalyptic like Spirits Within), or a mash-up of FFIV-X (imagine Kefka, Kuja and Seymour running around together... priceless) and try and make a coherent storyline with it.
-
Okay, the characters from every Final Fantasy game are brought through a time protal to the same dimension, and the baddies team up and the goodies team up! It's brilliant! No one's ever thought of this!
-
Yeah, that's probably the only way that could happen. So it probably won't happen, which sucks, because I really wanted to see Fighter, Kain, Strago, Steiner and Yuna beating up Ultros in a ruined Midgar :(
-
Wow, thats the best idea ever, but if anyone makes a fan game of it, they'll for sure be >:ed
If ff7 ac turns out good, they'll probably make another movie, but I doubt it'll be original because of the flop the spirits within had.

Well, like I said - if they use more FF elements but an original storyline, it could very well make a good movie. Spirits Within was nothing like the games, which is why it didn't do very well.

you're being sarcastic, right? the entire Capom SNK Marvel VS. series... no offense just sayin
well if there's anymore FF media it should be more anime like FFU
But I admit it does look pretty cool and would probably be better in HiDef-3d, like Kuja (even though it was that midget style) and Cloud. Kain and Dark knight Cecil would be great to see, and I'd like to see Edge & Shadow-- well, practically everybody except Cait Sith would be cool to see. but this is only hoping, huh? A giant mega-series crossover game. I can't think of a plot for it at the moment
-
Yeah I know, I just don't think square-enix would risk it for a while. Most of the FF elements come from there story lines which are very complex and epic, which would be impossible to fit into an hour and a half movie. I don't think they could pull off making an original movie even if they threw chocobos in, but it would be cool if they could.

FF - Movie Trilogy?
-
The only plots i can think of is the aforementioned time portal, or something along the lines of: Every FF world exists on the same world, and the continents are just big islands, and there's some big evil entity that is preventing each "world" from accessing each other, but the Cids from each world create seperate devices that destroy the invisible overworld looping walls, and they all meet each other and go destroy the big evil entity guy and stuff. It's an FF plot, but on a way bigger scale.
And imagine a "Who's the most evil?" contest between the villians:
"Kefka: Uwee hee hee! I'm the most evil! I have no heart!
Sephy: I tried to destroy my world with a meteor to become a god! How's that?
Kuja: I just wanted to destroy everything!
Chaos: Shut up, you're too girly to be a villian!
Exdeath: I'm a tree! That has to count for something!
Kefka: Shut up! *burns Exdeath*
Ultimecia: I hate all of you! *uses time powers to crush Kefka*
Golbeze: I'm still the best! I'm from the moon! *uses magic moon powers on Sephy*
Emperor of Palameica: ...I feel so left out...
Dark Cloud: Me too..."
XD
-
Completely forgot about Golbez, but he's good in end. He'd be especially cool to see too.
Zeromus *had to look it up* is the guy.
Warxe: Yeah the Cids probably would be the key, that's a great thought.
what about the resurection of the FF enemies? An exclusive FF-crossover boss? i wanna draw something!! but I have no idea what kind of person/thing this could be....
-
A Doom movie? o.o
I gotta see that.
-
Wait, you guys aren't actually serious about this ff mix movie idea are you? This is the idea we've been :xing every time someone tries to make a fan game about it...
-
DB: Yes, but that's because the wirters of those games were 13-year-old kids who couldn't think of a good plot that combines the FF characters. If someone could manage to do that, I'd have no problem with it.
-
Final Fantasy Unlimited into a movie!!
-
FFIX. And not like Advent Children. Just the game, on film.

That's it - I'm just going to call you MINUS from now on, you're so damned negative.
Anyway, until you see the movie you can't actually say that it's going to be a flop or a polf. There's only one way to know whether or not a movie will suck, and that is if Ewe Boll is involved.
-
Okay, FFVII:AC things got in a row:
Sephiroth will be in it, alive and kicking, Cloud is even going to fight him.
It will NOT be a Cloud fighting enemies movie.
It WILL contain Final Fantasy music (why else would you hear One Winged Angel constantly playing in most trailers?)
It is now confirmed that the original playable characters will all be seen in the movie, except for the moogle Cait Sith is riding (where the **** did he go?)
Last, Advent Children is leaked.

...is riding RedXIII.
