Well, I remember reading a while back that Square had been working on a sequel to FF6 (and the page made clear that it was not FF7, but FF6 part 2, like what they did with FF10-2). This project was scrapped, thought, when Square made the switch from Nintendo to Playstation.
I went looking for that information again and have been unsuccessful in finding it. Hopefully, there are some people here who know of the matter or can point me in the right direction, if there is any truth to it.
I'm not looking for the game (as I said, it was supposedly scrapped) or any playable version, but just some information and possibly a site to confirm or deny this.
Thanks all.
EDIT: Further Googling has revealed something about FF64 (for Nintendo 64... 0.o )

This it?

i believe thats referring to FF64, to which I found this:

There was an article on this "game" that I read in GameFan before it's death right around the FF7 hype, which in itself was never really a game but more of an interactive demo of Square's CGI concepts they put to show at a computer graphics conference called SIGGRAPH.
As I recall, it used FF6 characters for show that reacted to either mouse motions or some sort of "shape" movement. One could draw a circle and the characters would fight some dummy enemy (I believe it was the golem in those pics), or draw a star and the characters would use magic.
This was never a planned game. I don't even think it was intended for any specified console, but was widely believed to be an N64 game due to Square's strong relationship with Nintendo at that time.
Many other message board topics support this.

This information found on yet another site (this referring to the FF6 sequel).
There is much confusion about a spinoff of FF6, it was earlier said a sequel to FF6 about Shadow's life was going to be released. However, the matter closed. From a square insider information is given that maybe a FF6 spinoff was going to be released.
And yet, Another Site (http://games.tvrealm.com/article.php?id=154):
No one wanted to try a sequel to an FF game, and way back before the N64 came out they contemplated a FF6 sequel and was actually making it, but they stopped making it when they moved over to the PSX.
This sounds very similar to what I read before. Development of FFVI-2 for SNES as a prequel centered around Shadow, but canned when moved to PS.
----EDIT----
This is even more interesting Click Here (http://forums.ffonline.com/showthread.php?s=968ad41491a49af0d420d29d35e47f90&t=40035&page=1&pp=15)
I always wondered what game companies do with their material when they can a game. Perhaps Square liked their story when they were developing FFVI-2 before PSX and are now deciding to recreate the game with that story... anyway thats just speculation.
Since no one seems interested, I'll just let this die... and maybe start a topic on FFXII, appropriately subtitled "The Last Hope For The FF Franchise"

That seems so cute...

Yeah, those CGs are awesome. Except it makes Locke look like a girl, what with the breasts :p
As for an FFVI remake? I wouldn't get it. Like the people in that thread said, it would just ruin the original. A se/prequel would, too. Go put some more effort in an original game.

Cancel the ffVII Spin-offs and remake (if there will be a remake) >=)
-
well the story they would have would be a prequel if they used what they already have.
It would be nice, but I like when they come up with new things.
-
Yep this is all true.
I remember seeing that page and a topic about it on another forum. Whoah, just imagine, if square kept with nintendo ff7 might not have ended up the way it is, or even worse, THERE WOULD BE NO FF9! *cries* thank you square

I seriously seriously seriously seriously seriously seriously seriously seriously seriously seriously seriously seriously seriously seriously seriously seriously seriously seriously seriously seriously seriously hope not.

I heard it all, the rumors are either a prequel on the GBA or something on the new consoles. The Final Fantasy 64 has no basis at all, it was a tech demo of the N64 using FF6 characters, that's it. They did a tech demo on the PS3 using FF8 character I think, OMG SEUQLE>
Well anyway, no N64 **** was ever planned. The rest though, rumors are starting to pick up.
actually they did a tech demo on the PS2 with Final Fantasy 8, and I think Final Fantasy 7 for the PS3 tech demo.

If there is any sequel I'd like to see its FF8. Mostly to clear up an arguement with my brother. When I beat FF8 I swear the FMV at the end showed Squall. However my brother claims that he never saw it and that Squall is dead. Neither of us have played the game to the finish again, so we have yet to clear it up. That was 5 years ago :p
I have never finished FF6, though I've started playing it many times. I've started FF5, FF7, and FF9, yet never finished any of them.
The only FF game I actually finished was FF4 and FF8... wow. I never realized that. I should start playing these again.

I spent ages trying to win FF7. In the end that made my victory all the more sweet. "DIE SEPHIROTH! DIE!" I would shout. In my head.

Well, it wasn't that I couldn't beat the final boss. I just got bored in the middle of the game. Sometimes on the next to last CD.
