Title: Stick World
Post by: coasterkrazy on September 14, 2005, 10:29:36 PM
Yes, I am copying this from my website because I'm too lazy too rewrite it.  :p

Story
Stick World is a very orderly world of stick figure people. It's a thriving world that offers plenty of food and protection to all of its inhabitants. But just as our world's technology becomes more and more enhanced, so does the technology of the world of Stick World. With the all of the thriving technology, Stick World is running out of resources, and fast. The resources the inhabitants commonly use for energy is estimated to be completely depleted within 5-10 years. The capitol of Stick World, Technopolis, is home to a company called Tech Corp., a company with a master plan to create an unlimited source of energy. The source - fusion. But not just any fusion - cold fusion. Scientists of Tech Corp. have been studying cold fusion for years, and finally discovered an existing mineral buried deep underground that is capable of cooling fusion energy. (Yes I know this could pretty much never happen, but it's a game.) The negative side of mining the mineral is that the area it's located in is directly under Technopolis, which risks the collapse of the city, and maybe even the entire continent. Tech Corp. decides to notify the mayor of each town of Stick World about the project of mining the mineral, which remains unnamed until further study.

Azure's Scenario
When Mayor Lite of Arborville receives word of the project, he thinks of the town's expert minerologist and geographer, Azure. Mayor Lite sends a letter back to Tech Corp. informing them that he is sure Azure could be of some assistance. Azure willingly accepts the task and so he leaves home to go to Technopolis, where the story unfolds.

Rose's Scenario
After word spreads of the excavation, a group of environmentalists from Arborville form a protest against the project to mine the mineral, for fear of the collapse of the continent. Rose, being an environmental activist, soon catches word and joins the rebellion, which gets the title the title of "The Continental Safety Activists." Rose eventually decides to go out to Technopolis on her own so she can get more information and speak with the president of Tech Corp.

Characters
Azure Blue
Gender: Male
Age: 23
Occupation: Minerologist/Geographer
Weapon: Pickaxe
Bio: Azure is an average person who doesn't really get into too many things besides his daily life and his hobbies. He has a tendency to get upset easily, but not often. For the most part he's just a normal guy who studies minerals and geography for a living.

Rose Fleur
Gender: Female
Age: 20
Occupation: Environmental Activist
Weapon: Flower Spores
Bio: Rose is nature-lover. She is a happy person who loves her job of working with the Environmental Protection Society, but she finds other business she has to attend to when she hears of an environment-threating plan. Generally, she tries to not get angry with people, but that doesn't mean she's always happy.

Silver
Gender: Male
Age: 29
Occupation: Unemployed - Ex-Chemist/Physicist
Weapon: Adaptor Gun
Bio: Silver is a victim of memory loss. He's generally a quiet kind of a guy who needs to say more when he's asked. Since he doesn't remember anything, he can't say much about himself.

Violet Tula
Gender: Female
Age: 25
Occupation: Accountant
Weapon: Twin Boomerangs
Bio: In general, Violet is a calm-minded person who often has to attend business meetings. She is easily frustrated and annoyed when her lifestyle has to be interupted for trivial types of things, so she doesn't like her job too much, but deals with it. She doesn't think much of the recent news about the excavation, but she ends up being dragged into it anyway.

Quoise Green
Gender: Male
Age: 28
Occupation: Barkeep
Weapon: (Undecided)
Bio: Quoise plays it cool, but not when bad things happens - then he is often just quiet and doesn't say much. When something really bad happens, he becomes uneasy and upset. He's a well-liked barkeep to his regular customers, and is training an apprentice.

Yelonda Brite
Gender: Female
Age: 20
Occupation: (Undecided)
Weapon: (Undecided)
Bio: (Currently Unavailable)

Main NPCs/Antagonists
Scarlet Rouge
Gender: Female
Age: 27
Occupation: Tech Corp. CEO
Bio: She is a strong-willed type of person who is viewed by some as a friend and some as an enemy. She becomes more of an antagonist than a protagonist throughout the game, but she really isn't bad.

Mayor Lite
Gender: Male
Age: 33
Occupation: Mayor of Arborville
Bio: This friendly mayor is who really starts the game. He's a nice guy and is a respected mayor.

Mayor Lec
Gender: Male
Age: 40
Occupation: Mayor of Technopolis
Bio: He is a very busy man. Few people of the public ever get to talk to him, so no one knows that much about him except that he is very official.

Owner of Tech Corp. - No info yet

Circ/Circi
Gender: Depends which character you are playing as.
Age: Ageless
Occupation: Your personal helper.
Bio: Circ/Circi is a little circle person who provides explanations. You can view the explanations whenever you want after they are given to you.

Features
CMS - I'm currently developing it.

Custom Skill System - I was going to have a CBS, but that proved to be too hard for me, and I wasn't going to bother anyone to make one. So instead, I'm customizing the DBS with a custom skill system (well, it's pretty basic, but it's custom nonetheless), and I'm also putting in my own "feel" of the DBS, which a lot of people do.

TBS - Though there won't be a CBS, I'm still using Meiscool's TBS idea (page 2). I think I could code it because it wouldn't involve extreme amounts of variables to determine health.

FAS (Field Ability System) - Each character has their own special skills that can be used in the field to start with. Up to 10 field abilities can be learned (including mandatory field abilities).

All Sprites/Music Custom - I will be using absolute no RTP except for maybe sound effects.

Helpers
They will be included in the game credits. I also plan on my demo having credits so if you have helped me in any way you don't have to worry.

I also attached a little example of what the world map looks like. Of course, there will be more detail in the real thing - the chipset isn't done yet, so I was limited.

So let me know what you think. I accept all comments and constructive criticism.  :)

I like it. It's like nothing I've ever seen, heh. I wish you good luck.

Story could use a couple tweeks though.

Don't worry. That's just the base idea of the story. There will be many twists and turns through the game. Unless you mean the whole thing. If that's the case, what kind of tweeks?

Well... yeah. Bright and simple isn't my style at all; so I'm probabily going to dispise this game...

Well good luck on yas project.

Oh, then nevermind. I too like the style. Looks like this game will be 100% custom. Will you be making all/most of the MIDIs?

I was considering making the grass darker. It is a bit bright. One of the things I'm trying to say with this game is that amazing graphics and extreme visual eyecandy isn't needed to make a good game - not to say my game's visuals will be basically nothing, just that it's very basic (visually basic XD).

@Hell Angel: Yes, I will be doing most, if not all, of the midis, but I'm currently still working on two for other people and I have a lot of school stuff to worry about, so I haven't been doing to much with this game's midis lately.

EDIT: Wow, one major feature I left out. Multiple scenarios. Well, you can see that, but there also unlockable scenarios. The game itself won't be extremely long, but the replay value (the extra scenarios) will make it feel like the game is still going.

Thanks for the support, everyone. I'll be updating a lot more hopefully. The start of school has slowed me down too much, but I want to try to keep updating anyway.

I like your originality. I never would have thought to make something so tacky!(Pardon my poor choice of words, I just can't think of anything more accurate than this potentially insulting comment. Don't take it the wrong way.)

Title: New Screen!
Post by: coasterkrazy on September 15, 2005, 10:36:48 PM
Ok, I made another. It's in normal view this time and I added some more detail, though I still have a lot of the chipset to do. Oh, yeah, and I made the grass a bit darker - it was just a bit to bright, wasn't it?  :p

How far are you into the game? I would love to play this.

Post by: coasterkrazy on September 15, 2005, 10:57:39 PM
Sadly, I have not even started it. That's why I didn't open a thread at first. I thought that I didn't want to open a thread until I had something. But there wasa lot of info being added I just couldn't help but start a thread. I suppose I could use the DBS for now and incorporate a custom skill system, because I'm not sure when Blaze's CBS for everyone will be ready. I think I can make a custom menu system so that won't be a problem. A lot of chipset work has to be done. My friend (the one on my website if you've been there) has been working on a chipset, and I found out he's a really good spriter, especially for never having done it before, but he has had loads of school work and hasn't been able to do much lately. I'll probably finish the world map and possibly make the CMS over the weekend.

Thank you for the comments. As I've said, there will definitely be updates over the weekend. :)

EDIT: I have to mention that the chipset graphics style was all started by my friend. I just imitated his style to make my own chipsets so we could work faster.

Well, I had this screen on during the lost 10 days of charas, so here it is again. If anyone wants to help, the only thing preventing a demo is chipsets, which are taking us a while. Oh, yeah, I removed the visible tunnel roof through the mountains and just made the ends visible.

Mainly, I just want to say that I haven't quit with this game, I'm still working on it. I did what I kept telling myself not to do though - opened this thread a bit too early. The world map chipset is near complete and I was attempting to make the world map, but I can't get it exactly how I want it. I'm trying to make it feel big, but at the same time be able to fit in the 1/8 view. I made it as big as possible to fit that view, but I can't seem to get the right feel for making that map. Any ideas about this? Should I just make it bigger than what can be viewed at one time? I'm really a poor world map maker.  :|

Well, just to keep this updated, I've been working on the field ability system and a trailer - yes, a trailer even though I haven't started the actual game yet. Bcharas are coming along nicely as well - oh yeah, sorry I forgot to mention I will end up using the DBS, but I will customize it and I still do plan on using Meiscool's idea for the TBS. Here's a screenie of an example of the field ability system, which will sort of be like Golden Sun:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y55/coasterfreak291/FASExample.png

Yes, that is fully animated and yes, so far my friend has only done a remake of the rtp chipset, but we will incorporate its parts in to completely custom chipsets. I can only work with what I have so far. Let me know what you think. :)

EDIT: Yeah, also forgive the blankness of that map. As I said, I don't have that much to work with at the moment, but rest assured the real game's maps will be filled and eye-appealing.
Title: No this hasn't died
Post by: coasterkrazy on December 22, 2005, 09:54:11 PM
Well, just to update. I'm sick right now, but I'm still getting things done. I have some people who are helping mainly with chipsets and also some other things, but they aren't on break yet and apparently have little time. I'm nearly ready to finally get started on this, I know it's ridiculous how long, but when you're making all of your resources from scratch, it can tend to take a while, even for stick figures...

The TBS idea is looking less and less like a possibilty, but I have some other ideas that I can do that I'm throwing in.

Well, I posted this screen on my website, but had forgotten to add a level display, which I found a convenient spot for. Not sure about money right now, but I'll figure it out. I would like some feedback on my CMS so far - any critiques are welcome!
Title:
Post by: Meiscool-2 on December 22, 2005, 10:39:00 PM
Looks good. The faces creep me out though. You should put in a chara of them instead in my opinion.

Whats the FAS?
Title:
Post by: coasterkrazy on December 23, 2005, 12:42:32 AM
I mentioned the FAS in my first post, but my first post was pretty long so maybe you didn't see it:

FAS (Field Ability System) - Each character has their own special skills that can be used in the field to start with. Up to 10 field abilities can be learned (including mandatory field abilities).

That last line is definitely subject to change.

About the faces. I guess I could put a chara, but I dunno I've always kind of favored faces. I see what you mean though. Would they still creep you out in message boxes?
Title:
Post by: drenrin2120 on December 23, 2005, 02:56:14 AM
Wow... Stick world's a real game? I thought it was jsut a joke! lol, wow, that's awesome. I'm actually interested in this. I'll keep tabs on it.

and BTW: I think adding faces would be kinda off with the type of style you're goin' for. The facesets aren't creepy, just differently and a little odd.

Goodluck, CK

PS: I actually liek the storyline. I'm guessing you're gonna be changing things to make it more dramatic. But it's definitely more original than most ppl's stories.
Title:
Post by: coasterkrazy on December 23, 2005, 03:30:54 PM
Thanks Dren. Yeah, I guess I'll change the faces. I know what you mean.

Haha yes about the storyline, I know so many people make these already overused final fantasy storylines, and I figured I wanted to go for something more like the Earthbound style, that takes place in a modern world, rather than medieval times. There will be lots of twists in the storyline throughout the game, but what I posted is where it all starts. Once again, the main thing holding me back from working on this more is chipsets. I may just make some unfinished ones that have what I need but aren't full just so I can get started.

Haha, yeah it's really not hard to do obviously. He did it pretty well though if that makes any sense. We are making them for our trailer, which is making... some progress.
Title: Update with screens!
Post by: coasterkrazy on January 21, 2006, 04:42:32 AM
Ok, first off I want to mention that I'm pretty much canning the trailer... at least for now. I should be getting work done on the game than something advertising the game.

Ok, so in terms of help and getting things done, things are coming along. My friend is still doing chipsets, though he's always busy, so I probably will need to do some. I now have someone who is doing custom sound effects and possibly chipsets as well AND I started on the battle animation and have plenty of the CMS coded, thanks to DragonBlaze!

So anyway, I have some battle screens. The one with Azure attacking doesn't have the custom slash animation visible because I didn't take the screenshot right, sorry. And about the BG, that is the plain world map one so don't ask me to make it look nicer, sorry. The clouds move, though. :p Now, then:

Rose Attacking

Yeah, sorry about the fact that I don't have THAT much to show you. Just figured I'd update and say that there are things going on lately.

Simple: He made a battle background, with clouds, and he set it to scroll horizontally. At least, that's what I would do. I guess it's possible that he did something more... What's the word I'm looking for?... Unorthidox. That's it.

Nope, that isn't quite what I did; your idea would make the entire background move, but you were close. What I did was creat two backgrounds and put them in frames. For the background with the grass, I made what was above the horizon transparent. Then I set the battle BG to frame, and set the clouds as the background and the grass and the foreground. I set the cloud background to scroll horizontally and voila! Moving clouds.

EDIT: MORE SCREENS!

Part of (and a very small part of) the REAL world map! I'm going to be putting a beach town/city where the railroad and path begin.

a new real game screen? Yes! I'm just so eager to get some screens of the actual game out, so here is the very first besides the world map. This is the very first scene of the game. What exactly is going on here? You should know if you read the story. ;)

Couple of random new screens to keep you interested.

Scenario Select Menu when you start the game.

President's Ofiice (there's more to it below what's there)
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y55/coasterfreak291/PresOffice.png

Once, again I want to know if you think I should embellish these rooms more. Just say the word, I'll change it to be better if need be.
Title:
Post by: Cerebus on January 25, 2006, 12:15:49 AM
Those screens are nice. In my opinion, you don't need to 'embellish' them. It may seem a bit empty, but it's not like every room you go ( in real life ) are full of stuff.
I love that 'Tech Corp. Mineral Department lab'.
Just a question... why is there blue on upper left and lower right of the grey floor? ( In other words, the first and last grey square is half blue )

EDIT for this V V V : Now that you mention it, I can see it.

Jan. 24th:

Thanks for your comments Cerebus. To answer your question, it's just because of the way I did the autotile. If you look closely, the dark blue of the blue floor is in the lower-left corner and upper-right corner. I was trying to do a little corner effect, but the dark blue didn't work out too well in screenshots. It's more visible while playing though.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Feb. 11th:

UPDATE! I did the first floor of Azure's house, which is good because I haven't been getting much done lately, except my friend doing the forest. Ok, I took an out of game screenie of Azure's house so you could see the whole thing. The event is just a door, I'm sure you could visualize it there.

Let me know what you think. I'm eager for comments/critiques. Any touch-ups you see that need to be made? Tell me.

I'm making a rough estimate of this summer at the latest. I haven't posted any updates in this topic recently because I've been working on the CMS (which I'm doing pretty slowly, I'll admit) and also waiting for my friend to get some more of the gfx done. I can do the gfx too for the main part, but I have trouble with some of the things that he can do easily (mainly fine detail, which sometimes needs to be used even in a game like this). So yeah, sorry but I wouldn't mark your calendar just yet. :| As I said earlier, I opened this thread a bit early.

Glad to see you're still working on this. I can't wait to try it. :D
Title: TRAILER RELEASED!!!
Post by: coasterkrazy on April 08, 2006, 09:26:33 PM
Yes, it's true! I've completed a trailer! Get it here: http://rapidshare.de/files/17528194/StickWorldTrailer1.wmv.html

Tell me what you think. ;) Perhaps I will make more in the future, but I'm more focused on the demo now, which I still doubt will come before summer.

I liked the music, and for it all being mostly straight lines, it's suprisingly well constructed. Bravo.

Me likey Silver. You HAVE to put some sorta James Bond reference in the game for him.

^_^ I've started a revolution! Back on topic, great looking game, stylized with an über 2D, practically 8-bit fudge topping. :vampire:
Title: Which do you like better?

Ok, I'm having trouble deciding on the treetop style for the game. So I'd like to ask which do you like better?

Style A:

or

Style B:

Please tell me your thoughts!

B. A seems to stray a bit from the current noticed style, and it just looks kinda funky in that screen.

B, but the  Treetops seem kinda funny. Add some different treetop tiles for some diversity.

Edit: Just watched the trailer, totally awesome! Makes me want to start another RPG!

That's a good idea! Thanks. :)

Well, progress isn't so great. My friend who was working on this with me seems to be nonexistant these days. I'll try to get some things done, but I'm having the same troubles a lot of people have when having an RM project. Basically, just kind of putting it aside a lot. I think I'll start mapping Arborville and then Arborville Forest. If anyone wants to help, I could use a lot of help with chipsets. Even though the graphics are simple, there is a style to the simplicity that takes time and effort. If anyone wants to help me finish out these two chipsets, I'd be greatful and put your name in the credits.

Town:

It basically needs finished roofs and siding and stuff like that, like a real town chipset.

Forest:

Ignore the oddly colored ledges and messed up tree bottoms. My friend has a tendency to mess those sorts of things up. Same goes for the mushroom autotile, I guess he just doesn't exactly understand how it all works, but he's still good... :|

Help is greatly appreciated! I will start mapping with what I have for now. Also, if you feel the need to edit anything there, by all means do so.
