Post by: Almeidaboo on October 18, 2005, 04:39:19 PM
Iīm looking for some manga drawing style tutorials, specially for the front head (I canīt seem to do it anymore! Although my 3/4 view is perfect...) and sideview...

I already tryied Bakaneko and Polycarbon, which didnīt help much...and donīt tell me to google it, cause iīve already done it!

So, can anyone point me one good tutorial 'bout thaT?

No they don't. They show you one way of doing all the parts, which is fine if you have trouble with drawing hands and what not, but for heads and faces it's complete crap.

you don't need an manga book. are you talking about faces or heads?
Using a traditional type of art book you can learn the basics of head shape and adapt them. there are books especially for heads & faces. it's a better way to do it. it is just my opinion though

Never buy a manga book. EVER! It is the biggest waste of paper. Just go online and look for some. I know that manga-tutorials is still up, but I am unsure of polykarbon.

They can limit your creativity as far as building your own style goes. Knowing it can't hurt, but a lot of people just fall into a rut of drawing exactly like in the books.  It's like some people learn so much about music theory, they can't come up with anything innovative or cool.

O.O. Please NEVER mention Theory Class! I'm about 10 pages behind and have an exam coming up. Plus I hate it. Practical's so much more fun.

www.bakaneko.com is very good. Especially for anatomy.

May be, but they also teach some human anatomy.

Idk if this will help but this is basically how i draw front view.
Its kinda crappy, and drawn on paint.  I made this tut for someone before on a differnt forum.  Its pretty much basic for those who know how to draw already, but theres no harm in posting it anyway. lol.

1. draw circle with a cross in the middle like this. Each line in goes though the middle of the circle.
2. draw 2 lines on the horizontal line, equal distant. Take the distance between them and use that to represent the size of your eyes.
3. Draw the top and the bottom of the eye (using basic anime eye)
4. Draw where the eyes are and such. And remove the horizontal guideline , it wont be needed anymore unless u use for ears and such.
5. Finally draw the pupil and any reflections u want.
6&7. Add nose and mouth.
8. Draw the basic shape of the face. I find it best to make it look right is to the jaw at the height of the mouth.  I know it kinda da. lol.
9. Add ears right around the the eye lvl.
10. Add hair and eye brows and remove whatever guide lines you have left.
11. Color and enjoy.

Still Carmen, I never began from books, just what I've seen, then I had books for a little help. I haven't even copied any styles, none at all, yet I've been told my drawings look like Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's art (Evangelion). Unless u realistically have a style that is unique, nearly every other manga/illustration artist can be told to have similarities with some artist.

tHIS' an awesome way to do it! I did it quite differently, but I spent so much time without drawing that my front-views started to look crappy...

My big big dificulty is the side view head...I jest could NEVER do it...never... :(
