Okay, I've decided to reopen the Charas Breakout DX project (a solo project). Now, if you want to help, tough luck.

No, seriously, the only ways you can help me is by supplying "bitmaps" (not real bitmaps, just pictures, details later), or by helping me decide.

For people who want to know what the **** I'm talking about:

Some details about DX:

It will have a different high-score board, so we start from scratch again.

It will have a FAQ, so if you have questions about the game itself (production notes, gameplay things, etc), ask me here.

It will contain some secrets, like cheats, trophies, secret characters (WTF, or explained later), secret "bitmaps", etc.

It will contain multiple characters.

Some other things I forgot.


Anyway, for the bitmaps: 530x240. Only restriction is it will have to do with something from Charas. Hell, even a picture of yourself is basically allowed (do add your username to it as well).

I think all three would most probably be best - a decent range of characters is always a good thing. However, if I had to pick one, I'd go with GC, since somehow he seems to be the person you'd expect to see throwing helmets at people posting Bitmaps. He should have an ability to destroy more blocks at once or something.

Also, how about being able to buy/win a different "ball", with permanent special properties? Like a heavier lead one?

When you first had this thing, you had a dealy where we send in stuff and you make them backgrounds for the levels. You still doing that? Cause I made that Charas Action Figures picture especially for that purpose.

Ah, I remember this! Good fun.

If you're going to put me in, it's probably best to just put the female Sai'Kar in. I have no idea what a "male Sai'Kar" would look like, and no one would recognize even if I came up with one. Maybe, if you really want, I could make up a male version for a secret character.

Having a bunch of different characters would be fun, even if the difference is mostly cosmetic.

I'll crop my signature banner image to the right size and submit it, if you want to use it.

Some suggestions for the DX version:

* more interesting maps. The same square is pretty boring. Breaking up the image into rows so could get the trash up on top to large areas, and having certain blocks that can't be broken, and various shapes like a diamond or a trangle or whatever you want to make. We'd be able to see the full image at the end anyway.

* less efil powerups. The only useful ones are the demonspeed and time bonuses. The rest are basically worth the 5 second penalty to get rid of. Invisible helmet? Low gravity? Losing time when you hit bocks? Strange definition of a powerup you have here. Something that lets the trash break through multiple blocks without bouncing off, or maybe making the trash auto-bounce off the ground level if you miss it, something like that, I dunno. Even a "you lose all powerups" powerup would be pretty nice with the current evil selection.

* some new "bitmaps." You might want to collect some of your own that people won't submit. The current banner should be one in some form or another. I'd suggest screenshots from some of the more popular games too.

Might not be funny, but it still was a Charas-Only fad.

About the evil powerups, low-grav isn't exactly that evil, it makes the ball easier to catch, though the downside is the lower speed. Also, there will be more powerups ready, but you'll have to go trough the less good ones first. For example, the break-trough two was already planned as a powerup. There is also a corrupt file powerup in the planning, which will give you extra time.

At each five levels you'll get a "boss" battle, which basically will just be a special level. I've only got Virus Plague and Spam as an idea (Virus Plague emits special balls which gives you numbness for a whole second, Spam is just a bar which will go down and which drops mail, and when it hits the ground it lowers the time left, when caught it adds to the time)

More bitmaps have already been confirmed. Currently there are only two secret bitmaps, the "doomdoomdoom" bitmap and another one (for the doomdoomdoom one, just enter doomdoomdoom at the beginning of each level and you will hear a monster, have fun with Doomfox).

And I'll try to see if I still have that pic, Razor.

During the beginning of the intro some data gets loaded. This data is essential, and must be accessible easily, so that changes can be made without searching.

Ah shiat, forgot to mention what the difference with Alex and GhostClown was.

I'll show the stats, and they work like this:

Name - friction - max speed - power - variation - extra break - penalty

Name = Name of character
Friction = How long it takes to accelerate / decelerate
Max speed = Max speed of the character
Power = Base strength of the throw, determines the height of the ball
Variation = How much the strength can vary
Extra break = Ammount of additional blocks to break before getting bounced back
Penalty = Time penalty

Alex - 2 - 14 - 13 - 0 - 0 - 0
GhostClown - 3 - 12 - 14 - 2 - 1 - 25

Now, make up the stats of SaiKar, Darkfox and FFL2and3rocks. Also, I would like to know per character if he should be a base character or not (available from the start). I won't put all three as base characters though. From there I'll keep on adding more characters.

GC's stats are spot on (Less speed, more power is exactly what I'd have gone for). Hmm... Other characters. I expect that SaiKar would have a lot of variance in each hit, so some shots are strong and some are weaker. I would say that DF would have a time penalty of about 10, but would have more friction, thus making it easier to stop. And I guess FFL would have lower power, but an extra break of 2 or so.

I suppose the characters in production would be available from the start, and other characters/items/balls/etc. would be available with a certain number of wins. And not just mods and admins. Meh.

EDIT: How about alternate costumes, for a bit of replay value? XD

FFL - 1 - 16 - 10 - 0 - 0 - 5 (Fast/weak archetype)
Darkfox - 2 - 13 - 13 - 5 - 0 - 0 (Average character, but has major power fluxes)

And maybe

Heh, I think it's a great idea that each character has different stats. Also, it would be a good idea for the player to have to earn certain characters like already talked about, that way, it'll keep them playing.

One wonders why an administrator of the forum would be secret.

I played for a while as Ghostclown. That extra break is invaluable. The variance was sort of annoying and things seemed to move faster in general as him. Enjoyable and different. The physics engine you have in this game is amazing.

Found a bug, per say.
In the original, you'd have the BMP loading in the background, and over the cleared spots, you could still see it, it would just be greyed.
Now you can't see it over the cleared areas.

And you don't seem to be able to lose.
If I've got a few left before the time runs out, I still go on to the next level.
That said, I'm on level 16, and I still haven't got that last power up, or seen my picture :|

There are 38 pictures in the regular.

But anyways, I'll try to add some more, and maybe you will find it.

Okay, I've checked, and the total power (power + variation) may not be lower than 13. Or else, it won't even reach the top layer.

Also, variation works like this:

If power is 12 and variation is 2, then minimum power is 10 and maximum power is 14.

I also added a damage ratio thing. I thought that Darkfox was a bit unballanced (too weak) with the high variation. You can now check the variation in-game, if it wasn't implemented first.

Still no new powerups, but if anyone has a cool idea (must be either a ball-powerup (affects the ball behaviour), time-powerup (affects time) or character-powerup(affects the character)), please post it here, with the appropriate shield. I used the shield from the generator.

You know what would be cool? A powerup that allows the player to control the ball for a few seconds. Or maybe generic ones that make the player faster or stronger.

How exactly do you mean control the ball? Like in, you can tweak its movements to go for example left or right?

I think a more logic one would be one where the helmet goes in the direction of the character. This way a miss would be harder to get.

This can be useful, but not when unlocking a special character...

For some character improvements:

charcheat

Enter this cheat before the match begins, and you will be able to choose between some secret characters. Unfortunately it also unlocks one secret character which I really wanted to keep a secret, but hey, you can't have all.

Also some other improvements.

Here some short notes:

FFL2and3rocks is the only character made in Charas.EX.

SaiKar has his male form now.

The sparks in SaiKar's character appears random.

You can unlock SaiKar when finishing level 2. Bas the Bear will be unlocked when losing the game without breaking any blocks.

The total file size is now over a megabyte!

Sai is not unlocked when you beat level 2. I get the same four character choices as I did for the previous two levels.

Typing charcheat seems to do nothing as well.

Darkfox is an okay character but FF2&3 is terrible. I had a huge problem reaching the upper levels. His variation and "skid" effect are annoying. And he has a -10 penalty for no real reason. I failed to get 100% on a level using him for the first time since I started playing this game.

To be honest it's getting kind of tiresome. The gameplay is repetative and the only challeng is avoiding by far the worst set of powerups I've ever seen. The physics engine is perfecly solid and fun but the whole game seems to be conspiring to be annoying. All the levels are just the same square block and the only real interesting things in the game are 1) seeing what the image was and 2) unlocking new characters. But the character thing doesn't work and I've seen most of the images now.

Meh in general.

I had Saikar after level two, he has a 20+ bonus.

Like I said (or didn't), every 5 levels you will get a boss fight. Or preforming certain actions. The boss fights will later be unlocked as minigames.

The -10 penalty was set by FFL2and3rocks. I'll make it change a bit if it really annoys you, like making him skid less, and altering the ratio.

Okay, face it. I'm lazy. So I need your help.

How?

By helping me with the graphics. You will be credited for it.

What do I need? First of all, I need them to be fully custom, no edits off existing sprites. Quality doesn't matter too much, but it may not look shetty. So well shaded sprites are a must. Also, three sprites per given character, at minimum and at max, unless specified otherwise. Make it either fit a battlechar or a battle animation. 48x48 at max, unless specified otherwise.

After this project, I'll finally begin with the Charas "Movie". I'm planning on making it a series now, since it will fit the storyline better.

Anyway, I've added GaryCXJk and Carmen. Nothing new yet, but the item thing is undergoing a make-over.

CHARCHEAT should work now. If you type it in the place where you can also select a character, you should see everything you typed in, until the right code is entered (if you missed a character, don't worry, just retype the code after it). This will be removed in the final version, along with the charcheat code (or it will be replaced).

Carmen's a really fun and easy character to use. Gary is okay. The Bear is surprisingly unterrible. That -1 break thing is pretty nifty.

FFL still totally terrible. Sai a combination of really cool because of the extra break (and the sparkles!) and terrible (because he can never hit the top row). Can you give these guys like one more power or something? It's really aggrivating setting up a shot to break the last block only to have the helmet not even go half up the screen. With all the other characters you know it's going to where you want. Heck, even that BEAR is a better character because of the huge random power on shots.

Maybe if a character makes a bank shot off the wall they should get a little boost to power? It might be fun to make a character that can make really strong bank shots.

I played six levels and didn't see a single demonspeed powerup. Is it removed?

Maybe Timefreeze should actually stop time. Like, the timer for the other powersups doesn't go down and you don't lose time if you drop the helmet. Just a thought.

Low grav and high grav last very long in comparison to other powerups and are still very annoying.

I didn't unlock Sai (again) after beating level 2. Or any other character after fulfuilling the conditions you said.

Good idea with the bank shots, but I will only allow it to be a character specific power. FFL and Sai will both have this powerup anyway.

Also, Sai can hit the top row, it only takes more time. However, I will give Sai another advantage to it, so that he can hit the top row without the boost.

I will look into the level 2 glitch. I hope it will be resolved, I encountered it as well, but it seems that Sai and the other level characters only get unlocked when still having some blocks left. By the way, Bas the Bear does get unlocked when not breaking any blocks at all.

Also, the blocks will undergo a huge makeover. Broken blocks will have a sort of reddish glow, with another color to make a contrast between broken and unbroken Perhapse I will even use the red X or something. Blocks which require you to double break have a lock or something like it on it.

Low- and high-grav both get a time reduction of 15 seconds, since now we have more powerups.

The demonspeed has a low ratio, which probably will be fixed later.

how about a rare/hard to get powerup that lasts for about 5 seconds and instead of bouncing off the blocks once destroyed, it continues on. It would be like omega and destroys everything.

But there are also some small surprises. What surprises? Wish I knew, but when it's finished you will see, and most probably on Newgrounds as well. It wouldn't get frontpage for sure, but at least Charas gets more exposure.

However, you must have your name registered in the game, this has to be done everytime you start the game up. It will also be to take record of your progress. This will be done in a very annoying way, which I don't want to talk about. Basically, for the characters you most probably need two or three passwords, except if I take the special costumes as a seperate section. The password above by the way can be deactivated by entering it again, but other passwords cannot be deactivated.

But anyway, this is what you've been waiting for:

ALLMYPOWERS can be used as a cheat to have every powerup enabled for one play.

Lastly, I am not releasing any beta version for now. Not that I don't want to spoil everything for you, but more like the fact that I don't get enough feedback. Okay, I can still give you betas, but that's not what betas are for. Beta versions are for testing purposes, which I don't really see, except for a select few. But for the rest I don't see anything, not even a small bug report, or a bug notation from people who haven't been posting here frequently.

I'm not posting new betas to show off, or to just entertain you or anything. I want it to be at least Newgrounds worthy, a Charas game that at least gets a 3.5, which is high already. Charas does deserve that little much exposure, and I'll make sure it gets that exposure.

I didn't fight any bosses. I thought they were every 5 levels. WHERE ARE THE BOSSES? Furthermore, I... forget.

Another thing, that cheat works, but it doesn't reveal the powerups on the screen before the level. So I don't know what I've unlocked.

Another thing, in the first few breaks, you get way too many drops.

Bosses need to be implemented. I'm working on the virus code, which should be done within a few days.

It doesn't reveal the powerups on purpose, because it's a temporary cheat.

About the drops, I have this idea. In the beginning, there is some sort of water below the characters, or something similar. When the helmet hits the water, it will slow down. The water remains for about five seconds, and then it will drop slowly, probably also in five seconds or so. When the helmet hits the water and slowly drops, you still have some time to get your helmet back. How about it? This water won't appear in the boss stages, because they lack blocks.

I am also going to implement a cheat to only drop the magnet-helmet powerup, so that this powerup can get tested. Ultima helmet is also implemented, which you will have to find out what it does.

I really like this. I find the best part to be getting new characters, but that's just me. If they're easy to put in, I think it would be cool to see a lot of characters in there. New powerups are always nice to see too. Personally, I can't stand the low-grav helmet, but I can deal with it.

Alex
He's the leader and founder of the Charas community, and author of the Charas Online resource generators. Alexander Bonivento, also called Alex in short, is probably the friendliest member of the Charas community. He always treats everyone as a friend, even though that person might not be that nice. However, his kindness has been tested several times, and sometimes he can get angry.

In the Charas world he must face even more challenges as a leader of a crime-fighting organisation.

In the Charas world, he's a strong warrior. Don't let yourself be fooled by his looks though, he might look like a scary clown, he's all but evil. The reason he joins the organisation is because he likes to help people.

He might look like he has mutated in a furry, to be precice, a wolf furry, but he does have a human side. He just doesn't show it. His motivation? Women love furred men. And it seems he's right about that.

So, that's why I have a small proposal. I might be planning on creating a contest where people can post their generated self, totally fixed up and such. However, one part of the whole sprite must be from yourself. May it be body, head, dress or hair. Items are excluded from this part, but you can make an item too (or use an already existing item). Be sure to share that particular resource in the generators for others to use (body, head, dress, hair). You make more chance if you do a full custom, especially for dress or hair. It also requires a short story of your character. If this character gets accepted, and there's only one winner, it must fit the storyline of Charas the Series (changed the name). Also give a motivation why your character should be included. Some are excluded from this contest, simply because they are included.

Short story:

In 2004 Alex decides to create an organisation of crime fighters, together with some talented forum members (which means, basically one, SMB). In 2005 Alex finally sets up the base, but requires the help of getting a team. Therefore he recruits some experienced and unexperienced people. Because too many are unexperienced, he contacts someone from another team, who already has experience in crime-fighting: GaryCXJk. But what is the motive of Gary? And who is sabotaging the whole organisation?

I have some suggestions for the boss battles...

They would really benefeit from sound effects whn the helmet hits the monsters, and when the monster's projectiles hit the character. Also, I think it would be cool to have each monster drop a powerup which temporarily causes your helmet to do more damage.

Overall this is really good.

RRWP still gets unlocked by a no-falldown. He's hard to unlock, but you can manage it. You also need to defeat him before breaking all blocks. I'm thinking of making the sides double-breakable.

Because of the double-break, the game might be slower than you used to.

I can still use some bitmaps, so if anyone is willing to make one. Though, not too much. Here too is a 64 limit, and so far 38 spots have been filled. Also give a small description. I also have to note that I might not be able to add all bitmaps because of that, or some will have to be special bitmaps.

Finally, I changed the cheat for all characters to ALLMYCHAR. This will be permanent, however, I suggest you don't use this cheat if it gets released for real. Your high-score will get a special CHEATER mark, and you might not be able to upload your high-scores.

Haven't played it in a while. The virus attack boss and the magnet powerup thing are pretty cool. Some of the new characters are awesome. I love RRWP's "robot clink" when he moves.

One major thing though... the extra break doesn't seem to work anymore for Sai and any of the unlockable characters. Dunno what you did.

I don't know what I did either. I believe I noticed this glitch too, and this will probably be fixed in the next beta. For now I'll put the release of a new beta on hold until I have implemented some cool features.

@Tomi, I do vaguely remember you, but as of lately you aren't too active to stand out, therefore I can't base a profile off your "real" self, and therefore you might not make it into the game. Perhapse you will make it into the series (actually the last one is very likely, even if it's a brief appearance or only in a later season).

Anyway, request from me.

Build me a pirates ship. There is a ship RTP in one of the RPG Makers. I recommend you use this chipset to create the pirate ship. It doesn't have to be made completely, only part can be made. Basically a minimum width of 550 pixels, so you can just create a segment for it. From the top there is only about a maximum of 100 pixels visible.

The ship will be resized, about twice the normal size, so you basically can create a short piece with a minimum width of 275 pixels. But please, do retain the tile positioning and aligning.

No new beta yet, but I wanted to say that I've added three characters, and am working on two others.

Mind you, when I'm planning on making a Charas series, I'm planning on having it a serious storyline, not some half-crudded storyline like most sprite movies.

BETA 11 (http://multiverseworks.com/charas/breakout/BreakoutDX_BETA11.html)

New features:
- Password for characters. They can be found in the trophy room, under the character list.

- Bonus level: Sprite Love. After level 2 you will have a chance of 50% to get this bonus level. With each encounter, the chance lowers with 5%, up to 20%.

- Sprite is unlocked by saving 50 Sprites, not one. I've changed it to this ammount because I thought any lower ammount would be too easy. However, this will be changed to 25.

For the rest, I'm now working on the "Piracy" boss. How this battle occurs I don't know, but it involves a boat. I had an idea of making it so that you'll have to dodge the canonballs back to blow up the canons. This gives you more time, due to the bitrate changing. However, blowing up canons also cause pirates to obstruct your way. Getting hit by a canon causes you to stun for one whole second. If a pirate gets hit by either a canonball or the helmet, it sends the little bugger streight into orbit.

For "Trolling", I don't have a clue at all. Maybe it will be like the regular bricks, but moving. Like in Allyway.

Finally, "Flame Wars" won't be a regular one. This time, the ball won't fall beyond your level. You only need to hold back the wall of fire by destroying it with your helmet. I don't know whether or not I will actually make this one, seeing as it is one tricky son of a gundam.

Ah crud.

But that shows how important beta testing is. So please, test test test. I'll release a BETA11_FIX later.

EDIT:
Okay, fixed. It is reccomended to hit F5 a few times to avoid the glitch. If you are uncertain whether or not it is updated, use the levelskip cheat.

Also, as of now, BETAs 1 to 7 are unavailable.

I have a release date set, which is also the deadline. You can expect this game on Christmas day. The countdown timer is already in the front page.

But to actually reach the deadline, I really need your help. Currently I'm out of ideas. If you really want this game to be really good, you would help me out.
