Title: Fun with Holiday Carols

You all know how geeky and random I am, right?  Those two don't seem to mix well.  So I'm eating caramelized popcorn and I start randomly thinking of that Christmas Carol the Twelve days of Christmas.

You know how in the song, this person is getting gifts from her lover and he adds more every day?  Well if it's taken literally he's giving QUITE a lot of presents.  NOT just 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12.  Because note that the song includes the gifts from all of the previous days.  So that's a LOT of presents.  Let's count 'em.  1. 2. 3...screw that.  Let's just multiply...

I found that I could figure out the total number of any type of gift by the formula

(13 - n)n

Where n is the day of which the gift was given.  It is subtracted from 13 (reasoning is that it's 12 + 1) and multiplied by n.

This gives an enormous amount.

For instance, you end up with 12 Partridges in a Pear Tree (13 - 1)1 = 12.

I was bored so I decided to do them all.

Partridges: 12
Turtledoves: 22
French Hens: 30
Calling Birds: 36
Golden Rings: 40
Geese: 42
Swans: 42
Maids: 40
Ladies: 36
Lords: 30
Pipers: 22
Drummers: 12

I see a pattern!  12, 22, 30, 36, 40, 42 (mirror down...)

I don't necessarily see a patter after that but there you have it!

You're telling me you just now noticed this? I done know'd it since first grade. I didn't actually do the math until third grade, though.

Oh and a little tip: you don't look cool for saying "ooh you just now learned that I always knew it!"  No one likes that.  And it is not appreciated.
