Title: Hardware problems (possibly)
Post by: Almeidaboo on January 02, 2006, 07:40:39 PM
Hereīs whatīs going on: my cooler is kinda broken, but I give it a lil' tilt and it starts normally.

Then, Windows pops up...after 10 minutes the computer freezes.
I restart it and it doesnīt turn on (I mean, that black screen counting the memory, the display of your HD type and stuff, that doesnīt appear)! The monitor doesnīt turn on (I get the orange light) and the computer receives energies, but doesnīt starts...

Iīm positive that itīs clean: no viruses or spywares.

I think I have hardware problems. Anyone can give me a clue?

(the situation is kinda badly explained, any doubts just say and Iīll try to clear it up...)

POST (Power On Self Test) = memory counting thing

What do you mean by "cooler"? Is this a fan? And if so, is it the CPU fan (mounted on top of the CPU chip or heatsink (big metal thing)) or a case fan?

It seems like an overheating problem to me. If it is indeed a fan that is not working then that would only support my theory. Try dusting the inside of the computer out (use air, not a feather duster). Also, if any fans are not working, get them replaced. They should be cheap.

But first, let the computer cool off (30 mins maybe) then try to start it up without any side panels on.

Hope this helps. Let me know.

edit: If I'm saying something that may be obvious, I'm either A) being funny my own little way, or B) just covering myself. It definately sounds like a hardware problem though.

Edit 2: Is "cooler" some Euro term?

Turn the aircon on right next to the computer.

Hmm I had the same problems with my laptop, it was a bad motherboard. I could turn it on, then any time it started working hard it froze or turned off instantly. Then after a bit it wouldn't turn back on afterwards for a while. Now it hardly turns on at all. Though yeah, if you're CPU gets too hot, you're computer could get shut down and not turn on again until it cools down.

Anyway, I think its the motherboard. Have you ever gotten "The blue screen of death?" If you do, try to copy down the error message or whatever you get and post it up.

Sadly a new mobo for my laptop would have cost $650, so I just built a new computer for $450. A mobo for a regular PC shouldn't cost much at all though, the one I'm using was only 60 or so.

If it starts bleeding, don't get a new one. They frown upon that.....

If it is the fan that is ON your motherboard that is failing, then you need to replace it immediately. The computer is shutting off because the CPU is not being cooled off. Within the time its powered on and boots to Windows, its reaching a critical temp. Luckily it seems its an intel processor, since its turning off the computer before any real damage is done.

Yes, the CPU can be damaged. That will cost you. I know your in Brazil, but here in TX I can get another CPU fan for about $15. Try to get it replaced ASAP, and I mean squeeze it into your schedule.

I wouldn't recommend running your computer with that fan not working.

Itīs not like itīs not working...it does work, but i have to use a pen and give it a little push...then it starts turning around normally. I have to use the computer open though...Iīll make the best I can to change that cooler, so that I donīt have any more problems. But I need to check my wallet first, cause I 'm pretty sure that the spider that lived inside it starved and died...

Deffinantly the cooler.

My problems were:

- Randomly went out
- Computer felt hot
- Went out when I tried to start it

I really recommend getting a new cooler unless you suspect something worse, then get a professional for it.

Sorry for topic kick, this a update (and may help ppl with the same problem):

Yeah, I took my PC to the tecnician and he told me my coolerīs (fan) dead and that Iīll have to change it. Plus, he said that itīs gonna have to stay there fo 2 or 3 days for a general check-up (heīs an oldy little computer godammit!)...Iīll still visit the forums from here (my work), but I canīt play Flyff...

Lesson of the day:  if your PC freezes outta nothing and then doesnīt turn on again, check your cooler, it may be broken. Or: always take care of your cooler.

Thanks do Drighton, Drace and everyone that helped me out! You're awesome!

Gee Almeidaboo, I hope you didn't have a large stash of images that you wouldn't want other people to see on your computer.

LOL! No compromising pic in my computer...And no porn too. Those arenīt the reasons my PC got too hot...

EDIT: FInal update: problem fixed with some vaselin (oil) on the fan...itīs running smootly again. Actually, when it came back from maintenance, it connected to the internet properly, but IE, FF, MSN, no program that used internet worked!!!!! I had never seen a computer return from maintenance more broken than it was before!!!

Then I formatted the computer and everything is fine now.

Again, thanks guys!
