Title: MIDI Contest!
Post by: coasterkrazy on January 09, 2006, 02:10:12 AM
Ok, I am very happy to be hosting this and saying the MIDI contest is on! Thank you carmen. :) Ok, here are the rules:

- Like the map contest, don't use anything already made for your game or someone else's game. Make something new.

- Another rule straight from the map contest, one MIDI per category, and no resubmitting. Go for as many as you can.

- One more thing from the mapping competition, the MIDI must made by you, though I think that is kind of obvious.

- The MIDI should be at least 50 seconds in length. This can include an introduction (e.g. famous Final Fantasy battle introduction).

- And last but not least, HAVE FUN!

Ok, the categories: (Yes this is a lot like the mapping contest.)
- Battle
- Boss
- Final Boss
- World Map
- Town (this includes every kind of town)
- Indoor Dungeon (e.g. cave)
- Outdoor Dungeon (e.g. forest)
- Situational Themes
- Song (yes, going outside of RPGs here. Note: you may use an already created song here, asked for by drenrin, and I think that makes sense)

AGAIN like the map contest, this will go on for probably a couple weeks.

And the judges: Me (coasterkrazy), carmen and Meiscool

From the map contest again (last time I swear), PM me if you have questions.

Finally, let the contest begin!

Sweet. I'll definitely be entering in this when I find some spare time.

EDIT: Can we use already made songs for the "Song's outside RPGs" category? Because the oens I have in mind weren't made for my RPG. If not, that's okay, I'll just have to get crackin'.

Me too. Keep this contest going on for at least 2 weeks.

Yeah, I suppose that's ok. I'll edit it in the first post.

Very nice, thanks CK.

Then I guess I'll submit my first entry. I actually made this one yesterday. Took me a while, but I like it a lot.

Category - Songs
Name - If It Were Up To Me
Length - 4:42
Description - Nothing really to say. Yesterday kinda sucked when it comes to "charma", so I felt like writing a song. All my plans kept getting fuckered up and I ended up doing ntohing all day but chores, thus the name.  :D

1) I would like to enter, but I need a program.
2) I would to judge.

I'm on it.

I'd love to judge, as I wanted to judge the Mapping comp, but Robotam insitted that I be in it to compete with him.

Here is mine for the "Songs" category.

Basically, if you want information on it, I've got it posted in the "Outcasts of High School" thread in the Creative Arts section.

Have you considered Anvil Studio? That's what I use.

About judging, I'm not sure how many there could be. I was thinking three was a good number, but both you and Meiscool said you would like to. Do you two think you can decide on something? Even if it comes down to being four judges, I suppose that would be alright. There aren't that many competing thus far, so I would like to see some more competing. I'll let you two decide.

Meh. I dunno how we'll deside... other then through talking.

I did a test in the test and welcome board. It seems to work fine for me.

Post by: Seth Mitchell on January 11, 2006, 03:42:10 AM
What about a theme catagory, as in the main theme of a game, like the prelude, and all ff games.
Title:
Post by: coasterkrazy on January 11, 2006, 08:41:48 PM
Yes, I was thinking about that but the problem is that "themes" is too wide of a category. That could go anywhere from characters to titles to credits. If you really want to make one for something like that, it could go under situational themes I guess. I mean, they are still technically situations.
Title:
Post by: drenrin2120 on January 12, 2006, 05:01:59 PM
Here's a modern one. Kind of Techno-ish.

Category - Final Boss
Name - 5 Million
Length -  3:22
Description - I called it 5 million because there's probably more than a million things going through a players head during the Final Boss fight. And it sounds like a cool name.
Title:
Post by: Meiscool-2 on January 12, 2006, 07:57:24 PM
Ok, through much not talking or conversing in any form, Drace and I have desided that I should be the judge and not him.

That said, begin!
Title:

You are an idiot, ha, ha ha haha.
Title: Entry 1
Post by: Seth Mitchell on January 13, 2006, 02:04:51 AM
I made this song tuesday, I was gonna use it as a sit. theme, but its more of a song catagory, because I played it with my band today. The title is inspired by my game.

Catagory-Songs
Name-The Norain Dancer
Length-1:36
Description-A song I wrote Tuesday, I have lyrics for it here, I may play it in my gig saturday night.

Everything's sounding great. Keep it up!

I hope more people enter. Hey, if you don't consider yourself a great MIDImaker but can write stuff, give it a shot here! All are welcome!
Title:
Post by: AsakuraHao2004 on January 14, 2006, 09:04:08 PM
Category - Situational Theme
Name - In Peace
Length - 2:48
Description - I really wasn't sure of a catagory for this one, but situational theme works best. If anything, it's more of a character theme, but that's just my opinon. The sections are really short, though, especially the violin solo and the last part. I would have added more, but the peice I really wanted to put in the violin solo wasn't working too great in the time signature and chord progressions.

Title: Deadline
Post by: coasterkrazy on January 19, 2006, 02:06:05 AM
Nice to see some more MIDIs in. :) Well, I've decided on a definite deadline. February 1st. It seems no more people are really entering, so I'm just going to give some more time for people to finish up more MIDIs if they want. The only way the deadline will be extended is if a bunch of more people want to enter or people ask for more time.

Yeah, sorry Rev, but Cerebus is right. I could've changed it in the beginning but it's kind of late now. MP3s can do more than MIDIs so it would be kind of unfair. :| Sorry.

Sorry for the double post, but I finished judging. The verdicts have been made, and here they are. This was hard to do, because so many were really good, and they were in good competition.

F.Y.I. – The following scores are based on originality, creativity, instrument choice and usage (like how well they fit together), how well the song suits the situation, how well the song keeps a beat and other little things that I would just confuse myself and others to try to explain.

Battle
“Ready” by WingZero – 8

Boss
“Power Bomb” by drenrin2120 – 8
“Boss” by WingZero – 8

Final Boss
“5 Million” by drenrin2120 – 8
“Hearts and Minds” by Drace – 6
“Once Again” by WingZero – 7

World Map
“Free Runner” by drenrin2120 – 7
“Upon the World” by CoolZidane – 8
“In the Mist” by WingZero – 9

Town
“Japanese Town (Re-Make)” by WingZero – 7
“Mountain Village” by drenrin2120 – 8
“Nekido” by CoolZidane – 6

Indoor Dungeon
“Unknown Cave” by WingZero – 7
“Twisted Castle” by CoolZidane – 9
“Evil Castle” by drenrin2120 – 8

Outdoor Dungeon
“Snow Forest” by drenrin2120 – 8
“Forest” by WingZero – 8
“Forest of the Spirits” by CoolZidane – 8

Situational Themes
“In Peace” by AsakuraHao2004 (now Desimodontidae) – 9
“The New Dawn” by drenrin2120 – 9
“Miner’s Salute” by CoolZidane – 8
“Lost in Hollywood” by Drace – Disqualified, for the reasons Drace said it would be. :|
“Talk it Over” by WingZero – 8

Song
“If It Were Up To Me” by drenrin2120 – 9
“Party (Orchestrated)” by CoolZidane – 8
“The Norain Dancer” by Seth Mitchell – 7
“Stryke” by Linkizcool – 7
“Game Over” by WingZero – 7

Winners
Battle - WingZero (well, pretty much you won by entering, but it doesn't change the fact it's a good midi)
Boss - WingZero
Final Boss - drenrin2120
World Map - WingZero
Town - drenrin2120
Indoor Dungeon - CoolZidane
Outdoor Dungeon - WingZero
Situational Theme - AsakuraHao2004 (Desimodontidae)
Song - drenrin2120
Best Effort - WingZero (entered in every category)
Overall Top Three:
1. drenrin2120
2. WingZero
3. CoolZidane

Well, this was much fun. Hopefully, someone else starts a MIDI contest sometime so I can enter. Now we just await carmen and Meiscool's scores.
