Actually, there's a rather simple way of beating him.
First make sure you have a lot of Pure Etherals stocked up. Once this is done and the battle starts, just have Arshe start charging up Siphon energy until he has enough to do Shadow Strike - the boss is weak against Shadow elemental stuff - then use it. It should only take 3-4 Shadow Strikes to kill the Captain. Gwen should be primarily used to cast Pure Etherals.

It's not a good idea to create a boss where the only effective battle strategy is buy, buy, buy and rely on a single char. Especially earlier.
