Title: Game to Movie Transitions
Post by: Drighton on March 02, 2006, 07:19:24 PM
Games are making their way to the big screen, thanks to Uwe Boll for the most part, who seems to be the only active game-movie creator.

For me, though, none of the movies that have been made now or in the past would be my choice. This made me wonder:

What would your ideal game/game franchise to movie be? In other words, which game do you most want to see made into a movie?

Would your ideal movie:
- Pick up where the previous game left off?
- Follow the story of the game (the movie would be the Origin story)?
- A new story in the same world?
- Feature new characters or same characters?

This question would, of course, warrant a few assumptions:
Assumption the First: The movie will rock
Assumption the Second: The script will be an awesome transition from the game to the movie
Assumption the Third:  The actors will fit each role to the T and display ungodly ammounts of talent and skill while playing their roles
Assumption the Fourth: The movie will overall be a huge success, breaking box office records and generally be the best movie ever made in the history of cinema.

That should settle the IF factor.

I only bring up this topic because I began to think just how awesome it would be to see the Tiberium universe of Command & Conquer on the movie screen. I imagine this movie would be on the far side of the R rating (meaning probably pushing NC-17) if it were to portray the kind of violence and cruelties most players inflicted upon their opponents in the games. Taking the assumptions into consideration, the movie would be awesome even if it was PG or PG13.

Ideally for me, it would be an origin story, or at least have a narrative detailing the initial strike and spread of tiberium, but perhaps follow a fresh story of the struggle between GDI and NOD, featuring the Kane and whoever the GDI leader(s) was/were. (Can you tell which side I play?)

Well i wouldn't want it to have the SAME story as the game. I'd want to see something new, not something I've already played in a game.

I like it when the heros of the game are in the movie, but they wouldn't have to be the main characters in it. They should be there just so you know what happened to them or what not.

Either way, I believe a movie should expand on the game world rather than trying to do something completely new. Kind of like an expansion pack in a game. A movie is only an hour or two long in most cases, and to try and make a completely new plot would mean it would have to be shallow in most cases, in order to make a complex story, they'll have to tie into the original story and pull things out of that. If a completely new story would be made, they might as well just make an original movie anyway.

Nothing, I'd rather not see my favourite game raped by the big screen.

Halo, will hopefully be good. Money, Peter Jackson, (and Ewe Boll is writing the script!)

This is the expected reply to a topic such as this, hence the four assumptions:

Hell, I wouldn't want a C&C movie if the general consensus was that it was going to suck royally.

Mechcommander. Why haven't they made a movie? The game was god in disk form.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It's excellent movie material and also a TV serie. John Woo is working on Battle of the Red Cliffs which is a part of the game. Someone need to make a complete one...it would last like 10 hours...

My ideal game movie would be Metroid - if done right, it could be an awesome action-thriller, and Metroids > teh pwnage. Or maybe a Zelda movie, with the same kind of premise but with Moblins and Octoroks.
But, since Nintendo's never gonna let either of those happen, my third choice would be an FF6 movie, telling what happened after Kefka's demise, or maybe what happened in the year between the WoB's demise and Celes' awakening.

They should make a movie about FF7, only it involves clones rather then actual villains.

@Warxe: Metroid the movie has been announced. Produced by John Woo, ironically enough.

One thing that bothers me, is that movies are made of dialogue.

Metriod is not a dialogue game. I mean, we can't just have Samus walking around thinking outloud "This isn't natural" "Space pirates have been here" "I haven't had KFC in years" "it's a trap!" "gasp!"

And God forbid if they give her some really gay sidekick to talk to and have a romance with.

*cough*Tomb Raider*cough*

I think it would be interesting to see how an F-ZERO movie would turn out. I mean, an ACTUAL fist fight between Falcon and Goroh/Deathborn/Shadow/Blood Falcon/Chain/Zoda/etc would be awesome. And Don Genie. Fat guy + machine gun= awesome.

Legend of Zelda. I think that they could make such a fantastic movie out of the basic story. But, if it happens, hope that Nintendo has some part in writing the story.

Lol, A BOF without Ryu is like FF without Cid or chocobos, it just won't feel right (even though I change the name to something other than Ryu every time I play one of the games).

If a movie is going to be based off of a game, it has to include all the basic stuff that is a signature to the series. So the guy would need to be named Ryu, have blue hair, and in someway be connected to dragons. Then there'd have to be a girl named Nina, she'd have to be connected to birds or something like that. Thats what I like about BOF, every character isn't just a human, most are animal hybrids or in someway connected to some type of other being. Then again, there's really only so many ways where they can take a story like BOF before running out of ideas.

Too bad, 3 and 4 where a lot better than 1 and 2 in my option. I don't really think 3 and 4 are like 1 and 2 that much. But 3 and 4 on the other hand are VERY simular. Then Dragon Quarter sucked so bad that I couldn't even bring myself to finish it.

Whoa, I just got the best idea for a movie from a game. WORMS!!! Seriously, who wouldn't want to see a movie about worms blowing eachother up?

I also wouldn't mind seeing a chrono trigger/chrono cross type movie, but I think they already made an anime out of it.

Other than that, Bahamut Lagoon might be cool to make a game out of, but considering thats such an old game without any sequals, that'll never happen.

Then of course theres all the ones everyone else said that would probably make for a good movie. Or at least has the potential to be a good movie, but knowing the film industry, they'll probably screw it up in some way or another.

Metal Gear Solid is probably the most likely game to ever make a good movie. Why? Cause Hideo Kojima made is feel LIKE a movie.

In some cases this may be true. For a movie to be really successful in regards to a game, the writers, producers, etc need to get a lot of input from the fans to make something they will like.

I like to think that a movie should be seperate from the game (this of course depends on the game). The movie should start a completely different arc in the same world - different characters, with perhaps cameos of the game characters - and leave the original plot/arc/story to the game.

Why? Because they are two different methods of story telling: One watches a movie, and one plays a game.

If you make a movie based off of a game, and yet you have differant characters, a differant setting, and a differant plot, there is no point in even making that movie based off of a game. It totally defeats the purpose, and they would be better off just making an original movie. So yeah, there would be absolutly no point to make a movie BASED off the game, and don't even have the elements that define the game. It would be stupid.

mwhahaha, no matter what you guys say. No game plot can be as deep and winding as xenogears.

even though....it'd be like 5 hours long.

maybe a movie like series?

Back on topic, I heard the Halo movie is going to be pretty good. I'm going to see it when it comes out...   in three more years. :( Seriously, what's taking them so long!? They've been working on it for about two years now! Speaking of which, Halo 3 was supposed to come out two weeks ago. Where is it?

Halo - Hope it's good.
As for a different game, I'd like to see LTTP on the big screen.. Or possibly a Half-Life movie. If Xenosaga didn't have loads of 30 minute long cutscenes I'd want that as a movie. An FF8 movie does sound like a good idea.

Post by: WarxePB on March 04, 2006, 07:22:25 PM
FF8 would make a good movie, I agree. The plot line would make the transition well, and there's enough fans of it. It should be a direct-to-DVD thing, though, as that's the one reason why TSW bombed - no one was gonig to pay $20 or whatever to go in and see it.

My entire school's been waiting for it. About fifty of them heard it was to come out in the middle of February 2006.
