Title: Alternative Rap aka Underground Hip Hop
Post by: smokey_locs2002 on March 08, 2006, 07:50:28 PM
Alternative Rap refers to hip-hop groups that refuse to conform to any of the traditional stereotypes of rap, such as gangsta, funk, bass, hardcore, and party rap. Instead, they blur genres, drawing equally from funk and pop/rock, as well as jazz, soul, reggae, and even folk. Though Arrested Development and the Fugees managed to cross over into the mainstream, most alternative rap groups are embraced primarily by alternative rock fans, not hip-hop or pop audiences.
That summary has been said over 1 million times no remembers who started it but... I got it from
 ~mp3.com~

Now detailed one. From Wikipedia.

Alternative hip hop or Underground rap is a style of hip hop music distinguished by beats, samples, and lyrics that differ from the general template of popular commercial hip hop. Positive lyrics are often a hallmark of alternative hip hop, which detract from the materialistic and sexually fueled lyrics of mainstream hip hop. Although some listeners may associate live instrumentation with alternative hip hop, this distinction is invalid because popular rap acts like J-Kwon and The Roots use live instruments as well. Alternative hip hop artists generally have not achieved the same level of mainstream success that commercial rap and other forms of the genre have seen, although they are often critically acclaimed. Interestingly, alternative hip hop has developed differently from virtually every other musical genre, with its originators (De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest) being more popular than later innovators (Guru, Mos Def, Common). This is why some consider alternative hip hop more a trend than a rigid genre within hip hop.

The term "alternative hip hop", coined by music scholars, can be considered something of a misnomer: artists labeled as "alternative hip hop" musicians usually record and perform in styles that are more closely related to the original concepts and styles of hip hop music and hip hop culture, as opposed to their more popular commercial counterparts. DJ Kool Herc, the inventor of hip hop music, once said in an essay about hip hop, that "it's not about keeping it real. It's about keeping it right." In this sense, many would argue that alternative hip hop might not be so much an alternative as much as it is a continuation of the original concepts and ideals of hip hop.

After the turn of the millennium, as the United States (still by far the world capital of hip hop) found itself confronted by the War on Terror, lyrics grew increasingly anti-mainstream, with some advocating radical actions on the behalf of various anarchist and socialist ideas. The cover for the album Party Music (2001) by the openly marxist band, The Coup, proved controversial after the September 11, 2001 attacks due to its depiction of the duo holding a stick of dynamite and a detonator, ready to blow up the World Trade Center (though the band itself had been well known in alternative hip hop circles since the early 1990s); other groups like Dead Prez (Let's Get Free, 2000), Mr. Lif with his EP, Emergency Rations, and Emcee Lynx (The Black Dog EP, 2003, and The UnAmerican LP, 2004) similarly raised controversy with militant and confrontational lyrics.

Maybe itīs the lyrics theme.

Never heard of it, but it seems like just another branch of hip hop. And I'm a rocker, so I prolly wouldn't like it.

It's like rock, there are so many branches of rock; Alternative, Punk, Rap Metal, Death Metal, Hard Rock, Industrial, Emo... the list goes on. Rap and Hip Hop have got just as many branches, I just don't know what they are.

That would be popular rap though, these guys are talking about Underground rap, where the lyrics arn't quit as hostile and valgur as pop rap is.

That said though, it still sucks.

Live!

Anyway, I hate rap, R&B, and Hip Hop. With exceptions of course.
But people like "Fiddy" (retard) "Usher" (retard), all of those 600 new rappers who release one psuedo-hit and then drop off the market forever (Remember "Selwyn", anyone?), and then people like Missy Elliot (I hope she dies in a pit of eternal flames for the rest of eternity because of "lose control" aka the most **** SONG EVER) Ciara, whoever released that "One Thing" song (which makes no sense lyrically; Why would you want to trip the cops up? They're hard working people who enforce the safety of society as much as possible) Oh Christ, that/those Jennifer Lopez song/s suck/s so terribly.

Writing this post is aggrivating me.

Anyway, the exceptions include Eminem (his earlier stuff was crazy, his recent stuff is about his home life and what not), Will Smith (I can tolerate his stuff, and I don't know why) and specifically White Lines by Grandmaster Flash (which is like, 80s GET).

Someone kill Missy Elliot now. Before it's too late.

I think people who say Rap sucks are close minded. There are always gonna be people who like a genre, hell, I'm sure there are still people who listen to disco... o wait I'm one of them (even though I wasn't born when disco was a phenomenan)

I like rap, there are some rappers I hate, but will never say they suck. It's all a matter of opinion...

Except in the case of Kevin Federline, who really does suck...

Are you people stupid? This is NOT rap is it Hip Hop. Did you read  what was posted?

Go listen to some underground then tell me you hate it.

If you still just hate it then you just hate hearing curret day issues, jazz, beats that aren ot made by a machine, and the root of rock.
All Underground isn't even all lyrics. Like this one song that just keeps saying
"do you see the pride of the panther as she nurtures her young in the concrete jungle" I'm sure you can all understand what that means.

Hell Even rock developed from underground hip hop when it wasn't called underground.

How can you not like jazz with a poetry verses? With a meaning that deals with issues we have as humans?

I promise some people are so narrow minded. You can hate rap, I cant stand the bullshit. No one cares about how much money someone has or all the b!tch3s they get.

Underground can be very political, some makes you want to dance in a crazy way, and some will make you question if there's a god.

I know a lot fo you will never try it before you kick it, you're just lazy and sad that way.

only hip hop I listen to is Saul Williams, but I like some other stuff. I absolutely hate mainstream rap though.

If you consider Rage against the machine... then that too.

Quote

Talk to strangers By Saul Williams:

Nah, I wasn't raised at gun-point and I've read too many books. To distract me from the mirror when unhappy with my looks. And I ain't got proper diction for the makings of a thug, though I grew up in the ghetto and my niggas all sold drugs. And though that may validate me for a spot on MTV or get me all the airplay that my bank account would need, I was hoping to invest in a lesson that I learned when I thought this fool would jump me just because it was my turn.

I went to an open space, 'cause I knew he wouldn't do it if somebody there could see him or somebody else might prove it. And maybe, in your mind, it may seem I got punked out. 'Cause I walked a narrow path and then went and changed my route. But that openness exposed me to a truth I couldn't find in the clenched fist of my ego or confines of my mind, or the hippness of my swagger, or the swagger in my step, or the scowl of my grimace, or the meanness of my rep. 'Cause we represent a truth, son, the changes by the hour. And, when you open to it, vulnerability is power. And in that shifting form you'll find a truth that doesn't change. And that truth's living proof of the fact that God is strange.

Talk to strangers, when family fails and friends lead you astray, when Buddha laughs, and Jesus weeps, and it turns out God is gay. 'Cause angels and messiahs, love, can come in many forms: in the hallways of your projects, or the fat girl in your dorm. And when you finally take the time to see what they're about and, perhaps, you find them lonely or their wisdom trips you out, you'll find the spot where cycles end, You're back where you began. But come this time around, you'll have someone to hold your hand who prays for you, who's there for you, who sends you love and light, exposes you to parts of you that you once tried to fight. But come this time around you'll choose to walk a different path. You'll embrace what you turned away and cry at what you laughed. 'Cause that's the only way we're gonna make it through this storm, where ignorance is common sense and senselessness the norm. And flags wave high above the truth and the two never touch. And stolen goods are overpriced. And freedom costs too much. And no one seems to recognize the symbols come to life: the bitten apple on the screen. And Jesus had a wife. And she was his messiah, like that stranger may be yours, who holds the subtle knife that carves through worlds like magic doors. And that's what I've been looking for, the bridge from then to now. 'Was watching BET, like , "What the ****, son? This is foul". But that square box don't represent the sphere that we live in. The earth is not a flat screen. I ain't trying to fit in. But this ain't for the underground. This, here, is for the sun. A seed a stranger gave to me and planted on my tongue. And, when I look at you, I know I'm not the only one. As a great man once said, "There's nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come."

Someone fix the Quote Bug, please.

Mainstream Rap sucks. I think that's something we can all agree on (with exceptions, of course). The Underground stuff is definately much better, but I still don't care for it. It's not because I'm prejudiced against any type of R&B/Hip-Hop/whatever-the-heell-it-is, but I just don't like some of the songs I've heard that are described as "underground hip-hop". But I do appreciate the thought going into it - with modern-day rock, all you need is a single guitar riff and some random words, and BAM you have a song, and Pop.... I don't wanna even go there. But, as Smo said, the underground Hip-Hop stuff is like poetry with music, which is cool (On the other hand, mainstream rap is Crap without the "C").

I like to give every genre a chance. Even Rap. My brother was into some funky ****, he would make a mix, and on it would be Eminem, Chevelle, Godsmack, 50 cent, Run DMC, Linkin Park, and then a random band. My point is, don't be so close minded. Mainstream is for publicity and so the big wigs in the music business can make a quick buck. You have to look for real music, while being open to new and old ideas.

You'd be shock on what Undergrounhas both. There are no rules to underground music.

Oneo f the most insane Underground songs I've heard included nothing else but a violin, African Drum, and a flute and the song is about mexicans illegally crossing the broader into the USA.

Most Underground music won't be playedon radios for 2 reasons..
One ether the song is just too controversial or the Singer does not want their music on the radio to prevent them from being classified as "gangtas rap" or whatever you wish to call it.

I beat you didn't know Rock came from the underground music. So of course elements of rock is implemented into most underground music.
(and this is why most black people wont even touch underground)

Get out of this mindstate that 50 cent defines all of hip hop. There are rappers that actually use PROPER ENGLISH and dont say NIGGA NIGGA NIGGA every line. How ignorant can you ****ing be. I acutally have no problem with it in fact all i listen to is rap or hip hop or however you want to put it. I like the mainstream rap and the "underground rappers" in fact most of my favourite rappers are underground such as

del the funkie homosapian
lupe fiasco
Murs
and alot of others

although i dont really dislike any music(except country and bluegrass)i dont see how you can judge all rappers off of three rap songs you ever herd.

in fact im one of the most hardcore rap fans out there but i still find 50 cent and tupac anoying at times but if you all would just give it a try maby you might just find something you like.I mean come on people step outside of the box once in a while.

I picked 3 out your list. 'A Tribe Called Quest', 'Outkast' and 'De La Soul'. And ffs, get that B itchy Elliot out it.

EDIT: Judging by the track 'Can I Kick It?', I don't think I'll like 'A Tribe Called Quest'. Judging by the track 'Hey Ya', I think I can enjoy 'Outkast'.

She's not underground but she is alt. Sad enough. Not everyone in underground is good. A lot of them are tho.
Listen to Deltron and if you can find MF Doom's song Deep Fried Frenz, I love that song.
Jedi Mind Tricks is pretty good too, but I can't care for them.

'De La Soul's' 'Ring Ring Ring' makes me think of 'Rapper's Delight'.

Ring Ring Ring is a cool song I havn't heard it in forever. The Gorillaz's song, Dirty Harry, wouls have to be my favorite song of all time.

So Mr. Drace, how's your feeling on this underground?

So far it's still lying on the heap with all the junk I dislike with a few exceptions. For one, Gorillaz is also rock, but I ony like a few songs though. And of course a few songs I like from others... well ok, 1...

So it's not doing great up here.

With any genre you'll find crap and not everyone who claims what they are are what they say they are. (lost) You can call Gorillaz rock but it is Alt. Many see it was rock or pop but no, it's pop. Even though I guess Blur would be rock. Since Alt does not have any set rules there's a lot of alt peeps that are just trashy but I've told you which ones own out of all the people.
