Title: My First Monsters
Post by: ZeroKirbyX on March 15, 2006, 01:46:14 AM
These are the first monsters I have made to try and match my games look.

The first and weakest monster in my games first dungeon. Cave Worm

The most powerful common enemy. Jumbo Worm

The first form of the first boss. Hades Guard

Second form of the Hades Guard.

I was trying to make it look like that weird shin yrock found in olcanoes (Its a lava cave worm) and it didn't work too well.

Nice, but you seem to use a technique called... PILLOW SHADING!!! *Dun dun duuuuun!!!*

Basically, it's where you assume that a light source is inbetween the player and the sprite, thus making it have a sort of... Tubular look to it. Among skilled spriters, it's not very pretty looking.

Other than that, You should... "Speckle" your monsters; put down random pixels of shades to give your monster a more "rough 'round the edges" look to it.

Oh, I know how to do that. Its not exactly difficult. But these are made to match MY charsets. So I shadeed em like I shade charsets.

Yeah, it was mainly the Jumbo worm that worried me with the Pillow Shading.

Honestly, I think the others could probably maybe work without new shading, but hey, This new style looks just fine. I'd say use it!

I like. Yeah, the new jumbo worm is far better, the other's shading made it look like the grey skin was seperate from the belly skin- not attatched.

Yeah, I saw that. Instead of having the dark start on both edges if I had shaded in about 4-5 colors, the started the other siude simultaneously as I did with the belly, It may look better.
