Title: FAVOURITE UNKNOWN RPG?
Post by: Venator on April 10, 2006, 09:07:07 PM
Mine was the Mysterious Case of the Lady in the Lake. It was a fantastic game from 1992, with Midi Support and great storyline. How I miss that game; anyone got any old favourites?

Omega Weapon is not familiar with that particular RPG. However Luna Sun was an excellent game in terms of storyline which unfortunately has not recieved its due attention.   :(

Alas, I never heard of Luna Sun :( I'm sure it was a great game though. What year was it? I'll look it up on Home of the Underdogs.

Oh! do you remember a game from 1994 on the SNES called the Faraway Tree and the Bulb? That was a CLASS Rpg, by an unknown scottish company that went bankrupt in 1997.

'Twas an excellent game. It is a shame that newer RPGs do not pay homage to their betters by adding a hidden weapon or summon monster from said better games as an easter egg.

Yeah, that is hardly unheard of.

Has anyone ever played Ultima: Attack of the Celts? It was a rare game made by origin in 1989, and didn't get much press coverage. Apparently a lot of the graphcis in the original game were very good, but Richard Garriot fell out with the graphics artists at the last minute and so had to do some quick 'rush' graphics that weren't as good.

I think it only sold 5,000 units. Very rare game, and my friend has a copy!

Ah. Square of America's crappy attempt to make another Secret of Mana. Man, that got boring after 10 minutes. I think you couldn't think of anything better.
Well I'll go with Ikachan, a PC game from the creators of Cave Story. You can find it on HotU. It's in Japanese, but there isn't much text. You control a squid that has to eat other sea creatures to live. And you fight cool bosses.

There was a cool WW2 style Japanese RPG called 'The Emperor's Sack'. It involved the protagonist, a Japanese Charlie Chaplin character, sneaking around the Imperial Palace stealing all the important Japanese historical treasures, solving very hard clues on the way. It was made in 1994 by the Ashashara Company, which went into Liquidation when the Japanese economy didn't do too well in recent years.

Another good RPG that isn't talked much about, but I'm sure most of you have heard of, was Crystalis. I think that was by far the best NES game put out in it's time period.

Pardon me if I contest this good sir but if a company was to be closed in Japan it should be due to lackluster sales and not the splendid Japanese gaming-industrial powerhouse.

If that's the game I think you're talking about, yeah, it was pretty fun. For a LoZ clone. And there was a GBC remake, but I furkin' lost it. Since I lost both the NES and GBC versions (identical), and it's so rare, I fear I'll never finish it... :(

The Best RPG ever made that is VERY rare is 'A Bowl of Soup'. It first appeared on the Commadore 64, and was similar to Jetset Willy, only you had to go around gathering ingredients for the kings Soup. When you had finished, the king would let you marry the princess and give you a spoonfull of the delicious soup!

I can't seem to find this RPG though, but my older brother who'se into Troma movies says it's really cool.

Um, I don't think we should be discussing theft in the open, do you?

Download "The Magic Flap", that's an amazing old RPG about an old  witch who'se stollen the last cup of human kindness and is threatening to drink it, to restore her beauty. It's up to the protagonist, an apprentice Butcher, to save the day using his meat Cleaver.

This game was made by a Russian Company in 1998 for the Spectrum; Russia is the world's leading producer of Spectrum games, since it's so poor.

What is it comparable to? Is it available for downloading?

It's a bit like the original Pit Fall, just with more colours :) I think you can download it if you search for 'The Magic Flap' on home of the underdogs or google.

it's not the one that reveals the pixelated witches breasts at the end is it? I seem to remember she feeds the orphan her own milk as a substitute for the milk of human kindness.

I hope i haven't spoiled the ending for anyone

Why do you think it's called 'The Magic Flap'?

And it is a game from Russia, where censorship laws are slightly more relaxed compared to ours; children are allowed to watch pornography, for example.

I read somewhere on Wikipeida that the comapny that made 'The Magic Flap' were, at the time, one of the richest companies in Russia. The Director of the company was for a small time the richest man in Russia, owning four pairs of shoes and two television sets.
