Is there any way to make the battles sidescrolling like in RPG Maker 2003? I just got the program and I'm not too impressed with the whole First-Person view like the old RPG Makers. The extra layer is pretty cool though. ::)

nope, i dont think so, you'll hafta do a CBS but ive tried and its alot more trickyer that rpg maker 2000/2003

The best way to do it would be to learn and then use RGSS, rmxp's scripting system.  Use google to find some tutorials about it.

well, im in the middle of making a game for rm2k3 so for now i'll just stick to that

Go to rmxp.net, go to the forums, go to the scripts section, there are like two or three side view battel systems there that you can just download and paste into your game.
