Title: Star Wars: Knights of the New Republic
Post by: DarkLordYoda on May 03, 2006, 08:56:10 PM
I disapeared for a little while to start working on a star wars project, but now Im back.

The project is nearing a working(barely) demo phase. That I will post asap(which could mean anything from 3 days  to 3 years) ...anyway i will tell you about the game (cuz I know yall just can't wait...yeah)

Plot:

Set after the destruction of the Second Deathstar, the EVIL sith have returned...(shock! surprise!) Luke Skywalker has reestablished the Jedi Order on coriscant, and the Republic is preparing for war.  Luke Skywalker and his apprentice(thats you)
are on a quest to restore freedom the galaxy...(YEAH!)

WARNING: The plot of this game does NOT follow the star wars novels,(though it does steal ideas from them) it is an alternetive way things could have went before the empire fell.

The plot is also largely determined by your choices, which I will explain fully later.

Gameplay:

The game is HEAVELY based in Knights of the Old Republic style of gaming, and if you have no idea what im talking about I'll explain.

CUSTOMIZED CHARACTER:
You choose who you are.  Everything from male or female to name is completely up to you.  You choose your class of jedi (sentinel, guardian, consular), the abilities you want(force stun, force push..etc.) and you choose skills(security, persuasion..etc) the more you have of a particular skill the more option and items you get.(security opens doors and boxes, persuasion gives you more dialogue options and is used in convincing people to do ...stuff)

OTHER:
Force powers, Feats, and Skills are from kotor,(though some have been removed, others added , and some changed to accomidate rpg maker)

STORY:
The gameplay affects the story.

A female character will have a different story than a male. Just as a darkside character will have a different story than a Lightside character.

Summary:
A complete star wars experience, with authentic sounds and songs, custom graphics, and an opening credit role.

Heres a list of the "special stuff" not found in ordinary rpgmaker games:

Custimizable:
Gender
Name
Abilities
Class
Skills.

Dialogue options
Lightside Points
Darkside Points
Minimum of 2 endings

Play Along Side Real Star Wars Characters:
Luke Skywaklker
Leia Organa Skywalker Solo
Han Solo
Chewbakka
R2-D2
C3-PO
AND MORE.

Minigames

And Much More......

Alrighty well if anyone is still reading this rather long post Ill just say  that with any luck the demo will be up soon which will include rough cutscenes and a basic idea of how the game works.

EDIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck, but shouldnīt that guy Kyle be in it too?(Just a thought...Please donīt kill me).

Canīt say to much for the moment but it sounds good.

But I do must say that having the ability to choose appearance is a good idea, and the ligh/dark side thing.
Title: Screenshots

It was a little confusing for me to. There is a button on your keyboard called print screen. It should be between the numbers and the Enter key somewhere. Pressing that takes a picture of the entire screen as a Copy/Paste file. Press that button, then go to any paint program and press Paste and it should show up. If you want a cool paint program for free look up ULTIMATE PAINT in google or something.

If you wanna post the screens either

1. Use the attachment box-when you post check the attachmentbox when you're gonna post and press browse to use your picture.

2. Use photobucket.com This way is a lot easier. It teaches how to do it.

So KOTOR style means rpgmaker default system style. If your not gona follow the novels you could at least follow the movies and not have any Sith. There weren't even sith in the novels just Dark Jedi two diffrent things. The prophecy was fulfilled blah blah blah

Well, to be fair, it is his game, so he can have whatever it is he desires in it.

Personal comment - I do hope you plan to use an active battle system for this (Sorry if you mentioned it, I didn't catch it).  But, I do partially agree with the fellow above me.  You should try to add a teansy bit more customization into it.

You should use an ABS for this...

STATEMENT:I was not planning on having an abs style.  Sorry but i lack the rpg programing knowledge to have a fully working abs rpg (the most i can manage is a shooting mini game with a bunch of bugs.

STATEMENT:Im trying to add as much custumization as possible but with the rpgmaker 2003 system every character i make hs to have a corresponding class because i havent found a "change battlechar" option.

STATEMENT: If you mean Kyle Katarn should be in the game Ive been thinking about it, otherwise I have no idea what your talking bout...sorry.

CONSULATION: You will be able to customize lightsaber color
and wearing different armor makes you characters appearance change. (other lightsaber colors are not customizable, however a few characters have diiferent clothing appearance...jedi robes, armor, normal, etc.)

POST SCRIPT: if anyone wants to help with programing or ...CHIPSET DESIGN.  contact me.
that was me marketting for a crew as much as me admitting that if you want some things done i mnay need help.  I think most are great ideas but this would be my first FULL game, though I hae been playing around with the program for about 2 years.

UPDATE: The opening is done so as soon as I finish making things neater the "barely working" demo will be up.

I'm interested in the battle system! any screens of that? cos it will take a lot of work if its KOTOR style
Title: Changing Class
Post by: aboutasoandthis on May 05, 2006, 08:37:17 PM
You can change classes in the battle system. You have to use Common Events. In the Monster's Party Menu press Call Common Event. In the Common Event change the class there.

Changing class in battle removes your equipment though. You'll have to use variables to memorize the equipment. This link should help:

http://www.rpg2knet.com/tutorials.php?id=6

It's to jump (Dragoon) but it memorizes weapons and stuff.

Yes I am a noob but you could respond to me too. I can help you with the ABS if you need tips.

Keep working at it.

Warning I ramble an tend to ask for help every five seconds...

Ok so here's the deal.
I decided to post the demo without the first planet do to bugs.

1st, the version of the game i have is full of bugs (this is the first time ive EVER worked with variables, and its a bit confusing.

However has soon as I add character 1's second level to my "level up" common event this very buggy demo will be available.  Please give me tips on how to smooth things out.

3rd
Unfortunately abs system is way beyond my capabilities for this game.  Cant program friends to both fight  AND use there skills.
Again if you want to program an abs system for me you can.

4th
does anyone know how to make a spell(force power) cost more or less fp(force points)  based upon a variable.

5th
Does anyone know where i could find help for a project like this, I to make this game what i hope it will be i need to be great  at

battle creation and statistics
VARIABLES
fork conditions
 and chipset creation
and I'm not.

Last (finally)
How do you post your entire game on a forum, do you have to have a site first or what?   confused as to how to get my game to you.

I HOPE TO HAVE THE DEMO UP SOON!!!!!!!!!!

To post your game, you first need to host it on a site such as sitesled.com or rapidshare.com.  Then post a link to the download here, so people can try it out.

Here are some graphics

Update, many errors fixed game requires opening and closing cutscenes before release.

Sorry fore h the long wait, but I have high hopes for this game,
Its one of the most custimizable rpg maker games ive seen(which isnt saying much, because I havent played that many)  but Im excited to see your reaction.  Please be gentle this is my FIRST demo and its a very complicated system, at least for me, but also give advice and tell me abut any bugs you find.

The demo will be up soon

p.s. I know coriscant looks like saffron city, its a temporary chipset.

Question: Is it really important for it to be abs cause aaaaahhhhhh!   Thats alot of work plus bugs

Umm...where do I start?

First of all, using RTP as battlers isn't so 'Jedi-ish'. You should make(or let someone make it for you) some jedi battlesets that match your characters. Same thing for the faceset.

Second, in the beginning there was no intro as in the normal 'star wars'. But I gotta say, the ship attack was nice but the only thing I was missing is that the ship moved. You saw just some stars and then a ship coming in front of it.

Third, once I stepped out of a room and my face was locked. I also find a chest with no switch. So I kept on getting those frag grenades(look in attachment for the picture. You can also see there that my face is locked!).

Fourth, when I arrived at the escapepods and talked to the man who was standing there, my computer was stuck! I selected that I and the previous guy I met stayed together then it was stuck.
So I couldn't play further then that, so I don't got anything more to say.

I may sound a little negative but I just want to help you improve your game.
But the pictures are ok, the battle animations are original from the real Star Wars just like the music so that's all fine.
One last thing, the Sith was a little bit to easy. And when he attacked he had a blue laser...?

1)Thank you for that,  I was trying to release the demo as quickly as possible so people would see that some work is actually getting done, I knew there would be hundreds of bugs, that I can now fix.  So I apreciate it when there pointed out.

2)  I was hoing to let you all get a feel for the gaming system rather than the graphics which WILL BE UPDATED, I promise, it just takes me alot of time to make battle graphics. But I would really like to know what you thought of the custimization, what areas are good which are lacking.  The menu for leveling up(again the menu graphics are bad, but what about the layout and playability)  The dialgue options, the star warsish feel, If you liked any of that if you think it could be alot better.

3)The roll up will be added as soon as I ind out the best way to make it.

The demo will be updated soon, and hopefully it will be better.

Title:
Post by: SilverBlade on November 03, 2006, 04:13:53 PM
Well, I think the idea is ok, just as the menu system. But like you say, the menu could look better.

I got one thing to say that I forgot. I noticed that you still use an RTP titlescreen, do you want me to make one?
Title:
Post by: SilverBlade on November 03, 2006, 05:31:19 PM
Well, here's a title screen. You may decide if you use it or not, but it's anyway much better then the RTP ;)

Edit: Aw man!!! I forgot to add 'New'...*sigh*
Title:
Post by: Moosetroop11 on November 03, 2006, 06:12:50 PM
Yeah I assume you'll update the rtp, but your mapping is bothering me. Simple things like walls are left out. it's a pity because other than that it does seem very KOTORish (I haven't played it yet though).

I hope you'll do the light/dark system well. That's vital.
Title:
Post by: SilverBlade on November 03, 2006, 06:32:59 PM
There, now it's 'Knights of the New Republic'.
I hope you like it!
Title:
Post by: DarkLordYoda on November 03, 2006, 07:50:57 PM
whoa that is an amazing title, thanks,

all the graphics will be upgraded I promise, but this demo was to show you the skelaton, the lightside darkside variables are there they just aren't in any events yet.  Same with influence of characters, you can gain influence with corik by saying that he should be the one in the escape pod with you instead of luke so the variables are there they just need added to play.

Suggestion Box:

What planets would you like to see?
Do you have any ideas for feats or force powers?
Any characters you would like to have a cameo appearance?

EDIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BUGS FIXED:

Infinite Items, Chest Box
RTP TITLE UPDATED:  Thanks to silverblade
Sith Harder, and red animation for lightsaber, the blade is still white but the target flashes red.
WALLS ADDED, to some maps that previoulsy had just ceilings.
, new download link has been added to first post and the post with the original link.

Maps need some prucing.....DOnt be afraid of Lighting effects...and room ornaments....

I want to see more droids.

I know youre going to try to stray from the rtp and thats good.

I quite like the music.

The Cutscenes are sweet, but you need to find a way to dumb down the color......I think the palletes for the images you are using for backgrounds are not optimized for the images youre importing..
The cutscenes are good but could be made waaaaay better if edited.

Dont rush to make the demo any longer yet.....rush to improve the presentation.

And the CMS needs to be spiffed......Try using a panorama.

Title:
Post by: SilverBlade on November 04, 2006, 08:57:15 AM
I played your new demo. Three things are still bothering me:
1) The BattleChars RTP's(but we already knew that and I know you're working on it ;))
2)I wanted to play a girl once to see if there weren't any errors there...I found a lot! Her face is locked from the beginning and when she puts her cloths on, she still isn't dressed...?
3)The panorama's of the stars! I realy don't like it. So I got a tip:
Import my 'Stars' panorama that I attached. Then go to the map properties of 'Opening/Cutscene', the map where the ship gets attacked. Select my panorama(it's actually the Stars panorama from RMXP   ). Then tick the boxes 'Horizontal Scroll', 'Auto Scroll', 'Vertical Scroll', 'Auto Scroll'. Below the Auto Scroll of Horizontal scroll, put the number: '-2'. Below the Auto Scroll of Vertical scroll, put the number: '2'.

Now replay your game and you will see it looks much better when the ship is realy moving ;).

--------------------------------
Besides all that, I think the flight with the Escape Pods was very well done, it looked very professionel. Keep up the good work and in no time will your game be awesome!

I was collecting reasources for a star wars game along time ago, and I forgot to delete them when I realised this was a post-original trilogy game, sorry they have been removed from the chargraphics folder and will not be in any further demo.  If I had actually USED them in the game I would of course given you credit, when I upload the new demo they'll be gone.

However, I have a lot of graphics that were collected years ago, so if I am using something els of yours or anyone elses then feel free to inform me.

So I returning to the project with a better more reliable computer, unfortuntetly it will be a while before a new demo is put up.  The new demo will:

Definately include-
New battle charas
New weapon graphics
a temporary lightsaber
new face graphics of real people (myself, my friends, actors)
Updated environment
Credits.(I apologize to anyone who's reasources i used without credit, but my previous demo was released in a hurry and I didn't even give myself credit.)

Possibly-
New chipset
New battle abilities (I hate my current feats, but dont have any ideas yet.)
Intro to first planet mission (coruscant)

The new demo will be up a soon as possible.

heres the link:

Update:

Ive created basic battle char in battle generator.  They seem to be working well

Ive also written in a really lame excuse that lets you use luke lightsaber during the demo.

working on the star wars roll up but Im running into ALOT of trouble there. Im creating the roll up in windows movie maker, and the pan down is in rpg maker so theres a weird transition there.

possible release date for the new demo:

in the mean time check out some new screen shots:

Post by: SaiKar on March 08, 2007, 04:30:00 AM
My review:

Programming: I like the character customization. Male or female hero, a simple choice, yet a good feature. Of course I had to name her Sai'Kar. The choosing feats / skill points / jedi powers thing is a nice touch too though I'll admit I would have been totally lost had I not played KOTOR.

While creating a character I hit chose the "back" option to see what the classes were again and it crashed on me. Talking with Luke also crashed me since I talked to him from the left rather than the bottom. You REALLY need to put an "ignore impossible moves" check on those move event commands.

I feel like a putz for not choosing security. Why can't you use violence to open locked boxes, anyway? :p

Graphics: Star Wars-ish, but limited. Some of the areas just seemed too big and undetailed, like the huge ship corridors. Put some more time into making them look interesting somehow. Maybe more bodies or wiring or something?

The escape pod sequence, while basic, was still extremely awesome. It's very hard to properly do action in RPG Maker but I'd say you pulled it off nicely.

I liked how when I took the basic clothing off I was running around in my undies, hah. Different clothing graphics for different armors is great; keep that up!

Battle characters for your hero would be nice though I understand why it would be hard if you've got different clothing sprites. Other than that things were cool: blasters and laser swords, yay.

Music: Jouous Star Wars in midi. That's all it needs. Battle effects sound great too, from the blaster effects to lighersaber swings.

Characters: Since the main hero is customizable, you automatically win points here for having a cool hero. Corik seemed to be sort of a goon, but that's okay. He's just a random solider anyway.

Story: Okay, I liked KOTOR too but did you need to rip off the ENTIRE opening? :p Still, if you promise to mix it up a bit, I'm all for it.

Battles: Fun. I like very much how the feats and jedi powers you choose give different abilities and how you make them useful in combat. That sort of customizability will really make this game shine. And heck, shooting blasters is just a good time.

Overall: Too short! I'm hooked, heh. I want to see the fate of poor Jedi-to-be Sai'Kar! Put a bit more time into mapping and maybe make the choosing abilities list easier to read and this will be solid gold.

I love star wars, and this game looks really good. I started working on an RPGXP game a long while ago called "Knights Of The Old Republic III: The Under Wars." I didn't finish it. I don't think I want to now... Anyway, although I can't play the demo yet (driving me nuts), because I'm still trying to get RM back... This game is going to be soweet.

BTW, If you need me, I will sprite. Yes, yes.  :D

first, Im glad you enjoyed the game.

second, well unfortunaltely we move straight from the mon calomaria cruiser(endar spire) to coruscant(taris)  lower cities and the gangs are not letting anybody out.  However the plot will be a little bit more original later, this beginning is more homage to the first amazing game.

working out some of the bugs now. Ill check back in soon.
