Title: DS vs PSP
Post by: Razor on June 22, 2006, 08:12:37 AM
It's been bothering me for a while. On the internet I often come across PSP fanboys, or whole sites that conclude that the PSP is the better, but out of all my interfriends (coolest word ever?) the amount of DS owners easily outweigh those who own the PSP.
Hell, out of all my IRL friends, only one of them AFIAK owns one of them, and that's a DS.

So I project to you, fellow Charasinites, what do you own?

DS!
Why?

There are alot of games that I like that are comming out for this handheld, and I like how the gameboy markets.

Games:

Final Fantasy III
NEW Mario Brothers
LoZ: Phantom Hourglass

And other game that I would like.

The only games I'd really want to play on the PSP are the new Metal Gear Solid they're making for it (the one that ISN'T card based) and the upcoming Cave Story remake for it. But my friend bought a PSP (And never used it, but still maintains that he doesn't regret it out of salvaging his pride), so I can just use his.

One thing: Why are people going nuts over the New Mario? It's exactly like the old ones with a few new powers. Redundant, if you ask me.

I don't have a DS, but I recommend it. There's a good share of crap on it, but the games that are good are GOOD.

DS definately.

The PSP's main advantage is graphics and you can mod it to make games and such (Think Sony: Personal Computer)

I have a DS. Even if PSP's graphic are better, I prefer DS for multiple reason, but I'll probably get one this summer...

A fact : Most people at my school have PSP... but they almost only use it for music or video or whatever...

ds is better for gaming. most of my friends from school have a psp but only have 1-3 games.
Title:
Post by: oooog on June 22, 2006, 03:00:23 PM
The DS is better I believe.

Reasons:
More games available
More straightforward
Cheaper (In my area anyway)
Better battery life
Much more unique
Has internet and LAN capabilities

The PSP on average (according to 3 friends of mine who have PSP's) has a battery life of about 4 hours.  The DS that I have, and the 4 other friends I have to have a DS, all have a battery life that averages to about 12-15 hours.

The PSP claims to be better because it can play movies, music, and games.  Now, this IS a handy feature mind you.  Allow me to have my input.  For the cost of PSP, you could get a video iPod with more storage capability that is able to play more music, and movies (of the correct format of course).  As for the games, there has been only one game of the PSP that has intrigued me, and it still has many more months before it is released.

All in all, I believe the DS is much better.  But, keep in mind this is coming from a 15 year and counting Nintendo Fan (Playing Nintendo things since I was 1 :P).

My bro has a DS, and I wanna get a PSP. I personally believe that the DS is way better, but I wanna get a PSP so that we don't miss any good games that come out for it. I pretty much want a PSP for FF7 - Crisis Core, but there's a few other games that look ok. But as people have said... PSP is more a portable DVD/MP3 player then a handheld gaming system. It's likely the biggest flop of a system in this area EVER. I'm pretty sure that Wal-Mart has LOST money buying them, and I know Zellers has sold about 2, cause one of my buddies works at Zellers.
Title:
Post by: DragonBlaze on June 22, 2006, 03:31:57 PM
I never liked handheld systems because I'd just rather spend the money to buy systems and games that I could play on my actual TV instead of a puny little screen. So I would not recommend buying a handheld unless you're planning to go on a 3 day car trip or something.

Anyway, if I had to choose between a ds and a psp, I'd probably choose a ds. Though I think the psp is a better system, and it can play movies (handy if your in the car for 3 days), the games avalible for it are limited. I just don't see any games for the system that spark my interest. Better graphics and such doesn't mean anything unless the game behind them are good.

The DS on the otherhand has more good games for it, its more affordable, and you can play the old gameboy games. I was thinking about getting a DS the other day because if I traded in my gameboy advance sp, I could have gotten one for $55. So yeah, go for the DS.

WARNING ^

DS does NOT, repeat, does NOT, play any games BEFORE Gameboy advance. If you have any GB or GBC games, do NOT trade in your GBA!

End Warning

Post by: Archem on June 22, 2006, 04:25:44 PM
At first, I had some beefs with the DS (no games before GBA, no joystick/joypad like the PSP, and no link cable port), but then I realized that I don't play pre-GBA games anymore (beat the hell out of most of them, play the rest on my now decrepit GBC), I lost my fifth (and last) link cable over two years ago, and in most cases, the d-pad and/or touch screen do just as well (if not better) than a joystick/joypad. The main reason I got a DS was to replace my broken GBASP (damn thing didn't even last a year before it cut out), so I got what I wanted (a GBA, plus the next system all in one), it wasn't all that expensive for a new handheld, and the games are still the same price as GBA games (still about half the price of console games, mind you :) ). I'm a long-time Nintendo fan, and I've only seen about five games on the PSP that I'd even bother playing, compared to the already +10 DS games that I love, and more on the way...
This post has way too many parentheses, huh?
Title:

DS. Everything that the PSP can do is no where near worth the price. I'd ONLY get it because it can play Snes emulators.

Bah, for car trips/vacation and whatnot, we have a big multi outlet box that plugs into the car's lighter "port." So basically, portable systems for me are pointless since I can just bring my laptop along and play games for systems all the way up to 64 and Playstation on it. Sometimes they're good for study hall, but I have my graphing calculator for that. Zkart, Pong and Breakout all the way!

Anyway, if you really really need to play the old gameboy and gameboy color games, they've been remaking a lot of the super nintendo and nintendo games capatible for the gameboy advance.  Something tells me regular gameboy games and such aren't too far off either.  Just my instinct.

LIES! LIES! ARGH!

Maybe though... some games should be remade, like Metroid 2 or... well... whatever... and anyway, I have a GBC for old GB games... and a GB or GBP if I want to play old style! I don't like playing them on GBA or SP or even if I could on DS because the cartridge is too... big... doesn't fit very well...

I can't even think of a regular gameboy game that is worth playing anymore. Theres an old Zelda game, a few old megaman games, a weird Final Fantasy game, and a small handfull, but most of the good gameboy games were for the gameboy advance.

(I'm only on the net for the new hour or so but I need to voice my say.)

How could you like a DS over the PSP? Are you mentaly retarted? Did you miss me? well apperantly yes is the answer to those three questions.

reasons why the psp is better.
1.All of the different features it can have as well as personalization.

2.Good game selection(And that's true if you are a megaman and sonic fan like me as well as metal gear grand theft auto.....etc.)

3.You can put an emulator on the psp to play old systems or new which are still being edited.

4.It can play movies.

5.It is beautiful I mean just look at it. It's perfect in all ways....well almost nothing is perfect.

Having said all that i feel better.
Title:
Post by: Cerebus on June 22, 2006, 08:34:18 PM
Why I prefer DS over...

1- Personalization isn't really important, and with all the feature, it isn't just a HandHeld video game system, it's like a computer...

2- Good game selection on DS too

3- Read 1

4- Read 3

5- DS close so it protect the screens. Plus, PSP's front is just like the screen for fingerprints or whatever they are called.

Can you play online with a PSP without having a wireless router? Cause if not, then it would be another reason for I prefer DS.

^Has never played some of the great games DS is offering.
^Is a fanboy, so his opinion is invalid. Lol. Hey, what do you mean I can't do that?

But seriously, let's make a list of awesome DS games and compare them to awesome PSP games. Or better yet, tear apart that list.

Quote
1.All of the different features it can have as well as personalization.

Who needs personalization? It's a handheld console, you're meant to play games on it. If anything the fact that it also does music and emulates games only shows that PSP games aren't that great, that they need something else.

Quote
2.Good game selection(And that's true if you are a megaman and sonic fan like me as well as metal gear grand theft auto.....etc.)

Not everyone loves Megaman. Sonic is probably only by emulation, and how legal is that? The only Metal Gear game on the PSP that I know of is Acid, and I've been told it isn't fantastic. Grand Theft Auto? Funny thing. This is the ONLY reason that I ever considered a PSP. And guess what! They are bringing Liberty City Stories to the PS2 and XBOX(360?)!

Quote
3.You can put an emulator on the psp to play old systems or new which are still being edited.

So basically you need something to make the PSP fun, because the games they're selling aren't good? Yeah. Not to mention legality (which I already have).

Quote
4.It can play movies.

I suppose that would be nice, but I want a handheld gaming machine, damn it, I've already got a DVD player. And an MP3 player for that matter.

Quote
5.It is beautiful I mean just look at it. It's perfect in all ways....well almost nothing is perfect.

Nah, not really. Besides, just because something looks nice, doesn't mean it's fantastic. Like a ferrari without an engine.

Having ripped that apart I feel better.

Oddly enough, that's my exact same argument for why DS is better than PSP. Ask anyone I've ever argued with, preferably over this matter.

[Retard] Wow, I'm having fun and saving about 100 dollars, which can be spent to get even more games, or be saved for a Wii. God forbid we actually buy Wii's and actually have fun... I mean, how can you have fun with something that doesn't require taking out a loan from the bank to buy. Now if you will excuse me, I am going to slam my hand against my chest in a cliche fasion while I have a great time trying to get an A rank on Paint Panic, because only us retards like Kirby Canvas Curse... Have fun playing on your $100 extra two inches... ... I'm talking about the screen... Which when touched, does nothing, besides leave an ugly print, which shows you how crummy the graphics are two a PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii... [/Retard]

I totally agree that the DS is better than the PSP. My brother bought a PSP back when people were saying "OMG LOZL! DS R GAI!" and for the first few weeks he was happy with his purchase.. then he set it on the shelf.. then it collected dust. To this day it has about 3 inches of dust on it. My brother doesn't like the PSP as much now.. And I laugh high and dry with my future DS(lite).

One quote to call the PSP:

"It's the Xbox of the handhelds"

My sister has a DS and I have a PSP, and although the DS has better games at the moment (at the moment being a key phrase) I tend to use my PSP more for its multimedia features.

I agree that a handheld does not need these features, however they make a nice addition to an already powerful handheld. I find the single larger screen much more effective than two screens as I find the idea of a touch screen very off-putting anyway -- I prefer to control, not toy with a stylus.

However, the PSP does have the disadvantage of a much higher price and lack of good (not directly ported) games at this moment in time. However, I am certain that over time the games will beat anything the DS has to offer (though I do not like Nintendo games as a whole) and despite my criticism of the directly ported games I am looking forward to being able to download any PS1 game onto the PSP and play it. Portable FF/Vandal Hearts/Suikoden? Yes please.

What the PSP lacks significantly, though, is the screen protection... the DS at least has a protective casing and it is necessary to buy additional accessories to afford the PSP the same protection. The controls on the PSP I find more convenient that on the DS, although the analog stick is not incredibly useful, but perhaps I will grow more accustomed to it.

Besides, looking at them specification-wise, the PSP has far superior graphical and sound quality, although if you only count specifications the XBox would slaughter both the PS2 and Gamecube... still, I like my high specs coupled with what I feel is an already good package.

So I conclude that the PSP is less attractive at the moment, but once the price falls, good games are released and PS1 games can be played on it I feel it will be far superior. I presented two sides of view so you can't accuse me (too badly) of being a PSP fanboy :p

I have a DS, and I wouldn't even consider a PSP. It's so funny that a lot of kids at school who are into computers and know a lot about what parts are most powerful and stuff told me ways the PSP was superior, and how though they weren't getting either, they'd probably choose the PSP. But it's so funny how after getting bashed before release, the DS is clearly better, and the sales show it. One of my friends who knows a lot of random statistics told me the DS outsold the PSP by four times.

I think the main reason so many doubted the DS is because of the Gamecube, which I personally don't consider a failure at all. The only reason I don't think it did well is because it was "graphically inferior" (which never matters to me anyway), and it didn't have any innovations like the Wii does.

Now for an extremely biased comment that represents my deepest feelings without being covered up at all: TAKE THAT SONY! You had your time of triumph but you HAD to degrade poor old Nintendo, DIDN'T YOU? Looks like now it's coming back to bite you in the ***! :taunt:  :]]

...

*Ahem*

Sony should have never even tried to go into the handheld business.  And if for some reason they couldnt resist, they should've presented something new.

All the features, besides the games, actually, only some of the games, can be located in other handhels elsewhere.

However, I will still purchase a PSP when the price drops and the Final Fantasy VII Remake comes out.

Yup.
At first, I wanted both the DS and PSP (I'm a Nintendo fan, but I like to expand my horizons), but there's far too much coming out for the DS, not enough keeping me interested in the PSP, and the price difference for games made me change my mind...
And the PS3 seems to be on the same (projected) path, but without the wanting part.

As far as I know, there's only gonna be (if anything) Dirge of Cerberus on the PSP, and since it's supposed to be on the PS2/PS3, why bother? And yes, provide proof if you say "FF7 remake" at all, since the only thing even remotely close (based on my knowledge) was the PS3 tech demo of the intro to FF7. I'm tired of people seeing that tech demo and thinking it means "FF7 remake". Anywho, FF7 on PSP doesn't sound too unlikely, but I'm sure I would know more about it if it were true.

I have a PSP and both my brother and sister are getting DS's in about 2 weeks so I guess I can say I have both but.......I don't mean to offend anyone by this but........The reason more people have the DS is because it is cheaper and the game selection isn't really that great they are just now coming out with what 3 or 4 actual good games.....most of the games I have played on the DS have all sucked badly they may have the easy kiddy gamage but the depth of the game is the same as Nintendo itself "about at deep as the kiddy pool" but anyways the PSP may be more expensive and may not have many games out yet but look at the Playstation console over +300,000 games and they are coming out with new PSP games every month plues the PSP can play music videos internet access that is actually pretty fast if you get a big enough memory stick but ya this is my whole opinion on it but I am going to end on one thing......in my opinion I want good games on a system from the time it comes out to when it deceases and from what I have seen the DS does not have that...it is a good system and has a few good games on it but the PSP beats it in about every way

What the hell?! How is a weak game selection a reason to get a DS? And please get your facts straight! The DS has a TON of good games, and even more are just over the horizon!

My Games (which totally own):
Mario Kart DS
Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrows
Tony Hawk's American Sk8land
Metroid Prime: Hunters
Super Mario 64 DS
New Super Mario Brothers
Kirby: Canvas Curse
Metroid Prime Pinball
Super Princess Peach

Yet to be My Games (that will totally own)
Advance Wars: Dual Strike
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
Brain Age (a lot more fun than it looks)
Big Brain Academy
Animal Crossing: Wild World
Tetris DS (I'm a self-proclaimed Tetris-nut)
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Magnetica (A familiar-looking puzzle game)
Mega Man ZX
Children of Mana
Harvest Moon DS (What can I say? I like Harvest Moon!)
Yoshi's Island 2
Mario vs Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis
Kirby DS
Star Fox Command
DK: King of Swing (yays!)
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles - Ring of Fates
Mech Assault: Shadow War
Mario Hoops 3-on-3 (fuggin' Mario... I can't resist the fact that he makes sports fun!)
Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam (what can I say? I'm a Tony Hawk fan...)
Super Monkey Ball Touch and Roll (that name needs a grammar check)
WarioWare: Touched!

Of course, these are just the games I thought were (or will be) fun. I suppose you can decide for yourself...

Archem.. You forgot your RE game for the DS.

As for the game selection, it's QUALITY not QUANTITY. I should know I used to be one of the people who were saying that the games are "too childish" but sit down and ACTUALLY PLAY it is an entirely different thing. And this is an ubiased opinion coming from someone who has all 3 consoles.

As for the game selection, it's QUALITY not QUANTITY. I should know I used to be one of the people who were saying that the games are "too childish" but sit down and ACTUALLY PLAY it is an entirely different thing. And this is an ubiased opinion coming from someone who has all 3 consoles.

I have all three as well, but the DS still has shitty games.

If I wanna touch something, I'll ------

Meiscool, I know you have a closed mind and an open mouth, but please, I would like this thread to stay civil. And most threads don't stay civil when you post like you've been posting.

Nevermind. Just... just don't **** up the thread, ok? I like this thread... Same thing goes to any other antagonizer. Peace. :vict:

Heh, it's a fanboy war in here.

How about we just say that each system has its advantages and disadvantages, and leave it at that? Or will your guys' fanboyishness not allow that? ;)

Ya well I ain't not fanboy I love Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft I just favor Sony but thats because besides the NES and the Atari I mainly grew up playing Playstation and the RPG's on it so ya I mean I love nintendo games but when you get down to it once you get older its more fun to play a game that is not so kiddy but its still fun to sit down and play a nintendo every once in a while
Title:
Post by: Cerebus on June 23, 2006, 06:00:50 PM
It's true that most Nintendo games are 'kiddy' but there are some that are not... like, for the DS, Metroid Prime : Hunter, Castlevania... probably StarFox... anyway...

I was gonna put that in, but then I realized that it'd only be half true, since I'm not a very big RE fan. Heh, but I did convert you to seeing things from the non-Sony view! Score one for David!

You're apparntly the only one taking what I say in an incorrect context. Try being less self centered and think that I'm not attempting to start something with you or anyone else.

It's a fact that the majority of nintendo games are made for people that like pretty colors such as pink, hence, fags.

EDIT: ROFL! I quoted the wrong post! ZOMG LMAO!!!!1

You know, had Square and Namco stayed with nintendo, you'd all be singin a different tune. Meiscool, your statements are downright fanboyish (sadly for the wrong company). I tend to stick with winners and after I realized the glory that is the gamecube, and realized the pile of dung that is sony, I stand by my decision to go nintendo.

Square has been working with nintendo more... wouldn't surprise me if more and more square games come to nintendo. Nintendo owns for handhelds, (I have all nintendo systems, and ps2) so I suppose that Sony needed to try and branch out. But, even the games for PSP are expensive. I wanted a PSP, but only for Crisis core, and hell, i may still get it, but I don't wanna go and, as someone else said, 'take out a loan from the bank' why would I want to buy a 500dollar handheld (price here) when my brother has a DS, which he got for 120 or close to that, and has 6 or 7 really good games for. For example, Lunar Dragon song. It's an excellent RPG, only one issue I have, and thats when you run... you lose HP, but other then that it's a good game. The Mario and Luigi - Partners in time (excellent sequel to an excellent game) To be completely honest, my favourite game system of ALL of them is the GBA. It has all the best games, and more and more are coming for it. PS2 and SNES are great too. Gamecube and 64 are the dissapointments of the Nintendo family, but here's something Nintendo has that no other system does. FUN PARTY GAMES! All the best party games are for GameCube/N64. My friends come over, and we play Smash Bros, Perfect Dark, Mario Party, and we have a blast. PS2 (are there any 2 player games?) and Xbox suffer the same thing. DS has multiplayer, where PSP doesn't. PSP is better if you want to just sit and listen to music, but why not play a game AND listen to music (Correct me if I'm wrong, but the PSP cannot do any 2 things at once) Congrats Sony, you've made the biggest flop since the Xbox 360 (IMO)

Nintendo owns for handheld and I'm not sure but... is that Nintendo who started it?
However, one of the... not handheld, but portable that didn't own in Nintendo is the Virtual Boy...

Hence, I'm a fanboy of neither.

I have a gameboy, and the most I use it for is playing at night went I'm supposed to be in bed sleeping and I'm out of books, or long car rides. I bought FF Origins or whatever for it, and I've been playing that on it for months. That's how long it takes me to finish a game on it.

Yikes. That's some pretty crappy battery life (well, not the MP3 player, but there's no reason for it to be any less than 10 hours), at least, in comparison to what the DS can do. Which makes me wonder how well the DS can do... *runs off to perform some tests*
Title:
Post by: Meiscool-2 on June 26, 2006, 10:05:42 PM
Well, of course, I mean, the PSP is basically a mini computer, so yeah, it would take a lot of energy to run.

Frankly, if you're a pure gamer, get the DS. If you're into music and moives just as much as gaming, get the PSP. If you're interesting in saving money for things actually worth it, get nothing.

That's exactly what I was thinking!
I now see the PSP as the Hummer of handhelds: large (not a bad thing, but it's not for me), expensive (I'm not made of money... yet...), comes in black (or gun metal), not used for it's original intent (no gaming, no off-roading through the Iranian deserts), and bought as a form of bling. All I've seen from the PSP so far (sadly), is an overpriced MP3 player, or a pocket porn player. Midget porn, no less.

Hmm... pocket porn player... now that sounds like a reason to buy it.

That would be a very good advertising tool. 'Makes getting porn easy'.

You're all still missing the point. The DS is soley for gamers. The PSP is for more.

I'm not that heavy on games, so if I bought one, it would be the PSP because I like music. Of course, I could just save money and buy an advanced MP3 Player.

DS is nothing like the PSP, comparing them is retarded. People that compare them on a daily basis deserve to be stabbed with a fountain pen in the temple. I think DS has made a much better use of online play, but PSP is barely a handheld. It's a little miniature PS1 for fuck's sake.

****, man. Once again, you've put something into crude, uncivil words, yet you spoke only the truth. You've put into words some things we were unable to say until now. I applaude you, MrMister. You've single-handedly said the only truly significant thing in this entire thread.
