Title: Grammar school for Charas!
Post by: DarkFlood2 on August 16, 2006, 01:52:51 AM
Okay.. I'm tired of people not being able to use grammar correctly. You are on a forum and therefore have plenty of time to spell out your words and add proper punctuation! I'll try to keep this simple and short.. But I'll also try to outline the basics.

CHAPTER 1: CAPITALIZATION
Capital letters are larger variations of regular letters. They always come after a period, and they always in first person references (I, I'll, I'm, etc.) Capital letters should never be used to write out everything.. If it helps, tear out your capslock key. Unlike italics, Capital letters cannot be used to add emphasis on a word.

CHAPTER 2: PERIODS AND COMMAS
The period is used to end a sentence. After every period comes a capital letter. (see above) Before placing a period, your sentence must have an action word(verb) and a subject(noun). IE: "Jacob runs to the store." would be acceptible. However, "Jacob to store." is not. Commas are used to show pauses or seperate listed items. A comma is best used when you know how to use it. If you don't know, don't use a comma.

CHAPTER 3: THE APOSTROPHE
Apostrophies are used to make words shorter. For example, you can make "It is" become "It's". The apostrophe is also used to show posession, "It's" being the exception.  Here is a list of acceptible and unacceptible uses of the apostrophe:

1) "That is the cat's ball." - acceptible, shows a single entity's posession.
2) "That ball is the cats'." - acceptible, shows that multiple entities posess the item.
3) "Those cat's are cute". - UNACCEPTIBLE! WHERE DID YOU LEARN THIS??
Other unacceptible, yet common apostrophe uses:
agree'd                    image's
(and others but I'm too tired to insert them)

I'll edit this when I feel like it... Gonna go to sleep now...
Hope this helps all of you grammatically challenged people out there!

Also dude, i dont spell allthat well correctly but if you are gonna make this kind of threads make them more serious with more stuff.

"Jacob runs." < sentence. "Run to the store." < Sentence, but no direct subject OMG. but you would find that sentence only acceptable in special occasions =x

see i know the english language! but sincerely, i am too lazy when it comes to typing.

Eh, I might be wrong, but isn't the direct subject an understood "you" in "Run to the store." ?

Oh yeah, one more thing. If you're gonna talk about spelling, you should make sure your words are spelled out correctly. I didn't go through all of it, but I did notice one of the most commonly mispelled words. Separate. It's 'a' after p, not 'e'. Just remember, "separate" is "a rat" of a word to spell. :p

Dude; it's not,"noun," and,"verb," it's;"subject," and,"predicate."
And I'm probably several years younger than you. This made me giggle.

Yeah, those rapists are smart. They can track you down by knowing your age alone.

Internet rapists usually only target children or teenages.

It's not that big of a deal if you give out your age. Just don't give out your name and your location WITH your age.

Also, this topic is pointless simply because NO ONE is going to listen or even care for that matter. Futile effort.

i dont no about you,but i think its useful four folk's too improve there grammar.

But most people here do have good spelling and grammar, so a few exceptions are alright. We'll never have perfect grammar at Charas, since there's an endless number of people joining every day. It'd be like trying to kill every single cockroach on the planet.

(Note: I don't mean people who have poor grammar are cockroaches, or need to be killed. You get my meaning.)

I kind of agree even though I break the first rule every single day.

When I'm trying to state a point and no one is listening to me, TYPING LIKE THIS is a lot more effective that simply  underlining or placing what I'm trying to say  into italics.

I admit it's cheap and underhanded, but it can really mess with people.

Damn straight.

After what dren just said, I kind of realised a moment ago that it's impossible to write a guide on good grammar that's a decent length without making any errors.

DON'T TYPE IN ALL CAPITALS

^ Spot the deliberate mistake. :S

I think I'm the only member who uses semicolons; 9 out of 10 times, I'm most likely using it wrong.

I really overuse semicolons when I'm writing anything. Don't know why; you're only supposed to use them when it's the same subject as the previous clause but with a different point, or if it's a list of things where each item has a description.

For example, this...

Generic list: Soap, champagne, Bluhman, shorts.

... Uses regular commas, but this...

Funky list: Soap made from small sea creatures; reassuringly expensive champagne, Bluhman if he is available for purchase; shorts that belong to Gene Simmonds.

... Uses semicolons.

Second that. Also, this topic is pointless really. No one truly cares for grammar on a forum (exept you and maybe some other people) but for stories, books, and homework, That would be a different story. Oh, and if i missed something that too.

It depends how bad the grammar is. If someone really types like Drace did, well, I would care a bit.

I would say that grammar and such would be important if, say, a person was posting the story to their game or something like that, because that would also make it easier to read, more people would probably read it, and would ultimately get more feedback from the surrounding environment.

And in that case, Darkflood missed an important lesson.

[/LESSON]
Chapter 5: Paragraphs and Line Breaks
Paragraphs can be a good way to give your post a bit of 'flow'.  Using paragraphs and line breaks can give your reader a bit of time to stop, reflect on what they read, or just rest their eyes for a second so they don't go insane from reading such a long-*** paragraph.

Also, line breaks should be used when simulating a conversation. For example:
-----
Emerates: Darkflood, this thread isn't gonna help much of anyone.
Tomi: Yeah.  Everyone who needs to read it....  won't.
Bluhman: Emerates: Jane.
------

....And so, people are able to read without their eyes falling out of their sockets.

[/LESSON]

Well you still woulld be able to understand it. Though, if they always use u instead of you or 4 instead of  for in everytime in their game summary. Or anything else like that. Then, i think most people would care.  Psoting a thread on it would be pointless because like Tomi said no one would read it.

Proper use of grammar implies, in general, how mature the poster is. I can understand an error once in a while, but speak that is akin to what MMOG players or the average AOLer say is just stupid, especially on a forum, where you can spell check your posts and the like. In general it's a horrible first impression if you have bad spelling. The only exception I allow is in times of sarcasm, but that's only mocking the stupidity of low quality posts in the first place.

Besides, it's fun being a grammar nazi. :p

CAPS LOCK, TOTALLY CRUSE CONTROL FOR COOL. HELLA YEAH.

Ahem, I never use caps lock, even for that. Don't you lot just find it easyer to use shift? If I use caps lock I always seem to end up with lower case letters at the beggining of the sentance. And such...

Also, since when was a Full stop known as a period?
