Title: RPG Maker recommendations please.
Post by: Shaher on September 04, 2006, 11:28:31 PM
Please be nice, I asked the forum I usually frequent, and got one response saying "lol"    :|

I'm just looking for an RPG creator with a lot of options and enemy sprites, etc. I already tried RPG Maker 2000, but the enemy and character sprites were way too limiting...I guess I'm kinda picky, which is why the other forum just laughed at me. I also tried the '98 version, which had a lot more in terms of enemy models, but was ugly. I liked the look of RPGM2K, it had nice graphics, but too limiting. Vice versa with the '98 version. If  you know of any programs that are somewhat user-friendly and have a lot of options, please send me a link. Appreciate it.  :)

Hmm, you could always try RM2k3, it is what most users here use.
Or you could try a trial version of RMXP, or find a cracked version, but from what I hear it wont play legal version games.

You know you can import custom onsters to RM2K/3?

Dude, you can make and add your own resources to RPG Maker games. That's why people said: "Lol", because it's kinda 'duh' knowledge.

It took me, like, a month to figure that out, you know?

Bleh, mistake...the one I have is XP, and the other is '03. Honestly, I'm probably just being too picky with this, heh. I want more enemy models more than good graphics, so I guess I'll just try to make the '03 version work for me.

With rmxp, the graphics are much more detailed, but in turn, are harder to make. Also, a lot of snes games had the same graphics syles and formats that rm2k3 uses, however, with rmxp, theres only a handfull of games that used graphics in that style. For example, playstation, unlike snes, had a lot of 3d games. The games that WERE in 2D and had the same resolution as rmxp, were usually isometric, and rmxp doesn't really handle isometric graphics too well.

Basically, there aren't as many graphics made for rmxp yet, and thus, you'll have a hard time finding them on the internet.

On the other hand, if you used rm2k3, there are millions of gfx made for it that you can import into your game. There are graphics for pretty much anything you could want in your game, you just have to know where to look. If you go to the main page of this site http://www.charas-project.net browse through the complete resource section and you can find thousands of gfx to put in your game. If you're looking for a charater, you can use chars character generator and make a character look just about however you want him/her to look.

RPG Maker's about the best thing you're going to get if you're looking for a point-and-click RPG creator. Though you might feel limited at first, there's actually a lot of stuff you can do in the engine - you just need to be a bit creative.
RMXP is more for people who want to do complex systems, as it has a built-in Ruby scripter in which you can make more complex scripts. RM2K3 is easier to get a grip on, but it's more limited in function.
