How hard is it really to get high speed internet?

I've been stuck with dial up my whole life, finally, i got sick of it, and wanted to order some high speed internet. I went to best buy and used their ISP search and charter appeard on the list of things I could get in my area (the only other one was satallite). I got that ordered.

A week later, we called charter to set up the installation date. They told us that we couldn't get high speed internet where we live. (BTW: the best buy ISP search is sponsered by getconnected which gets their information dirrectly from charter and the other ISPs). Being a little upset, I sent out e-mails to both Best Buy and Charter asking them what was going on. I got a responce back from best buy the next day saying they were gonna ask charter about it. I never heard from either of them again. I gave up trying to e-mail them, so I got in an IM session with a charter rep and asked him about it. He didn't know anything about what was going on, but after an hour or so, he confirmed our adress so someone would at least come out to our house if we set up an installation date, but that didn't mean we could for sure get it, so I wanted to get some things straight before I went through with that.

A week later, after searching google, I joined some ISP tech forums or something like that and presented my problem. There, two people responded and said they are using charter right now but according to charter, they can't get it. They then told me that I should get in contact with my local office, whatever that is, and talk to them. I have no idea where my local office is, nor how to find it. I asked them about it, I got no responce *sigh*.

Two days later, I e-mailed charter again at about 1 in the morning This time, I got a responce within an hour. This was the reply e-mail.

The next day (today), I called that number, guess what they said. Charter does not offer service to my area... I read them them the e-mail, and finally, they said they'd actually send someone out to check to see if we could get high speed internet and they would call us when they got an answer. Its gonan be 7-10 days for them to do that. AFTER that, if all goes well, we can set up an instalation date and get high speed internet.

And this is the end of my rant.



Right now, I have one question for all you broadband users, is all my trouble going to be worth it in the end? It  better be... or else...  *spamlas*

Well heres what I'm looking at, if charter says I can get it, then I go ahead with the order. If they're stupid and don't call back, I'll have to drive out 50 miles to my charter local office. Its kinda funny cuz I live right outside a pretty big city, so one would think they'd have a charter office there, but I guess not... If they say I can't get it, well I'm probably still going to run out to the local office and talk with them, if everyone else but charter AND some people from charter say I can get it, one would think I could get it.

I WANT TO GIVE YOU MONEY CHARTER, WHY WON'T YOU SET ME UP WITH YOUR SERVICE ALREADY!!!!!!!

Lol, I got a free digital camera with my high speed internet. It's a lot simpler here in Canada, even though I live on the top of a mountain. you must live in a pretty rural area (I remeber you saying something about a farm?) to not have cable. Living in the prairies for part of my life myself, I never had Internet there. But that is pretty dysfunctional, kinda like my local sports club. They told me I couldn't book a tennis court THREE HOURS before I wanted to play because "it was against some rule she dramatically remembered".

I like my glitchy wireless... <.< broadband, my friend has. He says he likes it, I dunno. I've been hearing aol in front of broadband a bit to much, and aol sucks arse so...... <.<

5mbps really isn't that fast. But compared to dail up, it is godly.

Internet companies do that, they measure their speed in bits, not bytes, keep that in mind when ordering.

If 4mbps is really only 512kilobytes per seccond, you're really getting a little over a half a megabyte persecond, so don't expect downloads to be instant.

Internet companies claim that thier speeds are hundreds of times faster, but it just isn't true.. Your internet will be a little better then 10 times faster, if your dial-up clocks at 56k.

Honestly, it's worth killing over dial up, but, when I had DSL, I noticed no difference other then online-gaming and cost to get the internet. DSL is just as good.

Oh, dial-up isnt that bad. Sometimes waiting 8 hours for a 70 mb dowload can be fun!

I don't mind waiting 8 hours at all. Well I do, but its not bad compared to how long I have to wait for things now. But right now I'm downloading a 5.7 GB file, I'm 25% done now, and I still have about 12 days left...

Plus,  I can't play many online games, and dial up is just restricting what I can do with my computer :(

I know what you mean. I had dialup for a while, and it sucked because my friends couldn't phone me while I was online. Which sucked.

Lol, the download is Star Ocean EX. It was one of my favorite games, so I wanted to watch the series. I would have bought it on DVD at a local store, but there aren't any local stores that have it.

IF I get high speed internet, I'll probably download a few more tv series on my computer.

Why hate AOL? It's slow, but it's loveable. Especially when you attach Firefox or MSN to it. I'm using dial-up, but I'd still love Broadband.

If I have to wait at least 4 hours for something, I won't do it. Get Flashget if you want a big download. It can save your place.

AOL sucks cow feces. They're stupid "parental controls" for PRETEENS wouldn't let me go on to even frikin NEOPETS because of "inappropriate content". The !@#$ing piece of useless crap wouldn't let me go on FUGGIN GOOGLE! NOOOOO, I have to use FRIKIN YAHOOLIGANS TO GET FUGGIN INFO ON ANY SCHOOL THING I HAVE TO DO? I cried because it made me so ticked off.

I have AOL, Its not really that bad at all for me. I don't have any parental controls, so I don't have to worry about that. Its fast for dial up. It doesn't work with a lot of sites, and it makes jpeg image files look like crap, but thats when I open up firefox and use that.

I would rather have a diffearnt internet service than AOL, but its not my decision, and its not really a big deal for me, so I don't really mind it at all.
