Title: Piracy.
Post by: Apex on September 13, 2006, 12:49:46 PM
Now, it would be totally pointless to have a poll asking if you have commited piracy or not, because face it, if you have been on the internet, and are between the ages of 12-30 You HAVE in some way commited an act of piracy.

So, why do we pirate?

FREE STUFF!!

It's a natural thing in life to take something that doesn't belong to you, it is an urge everyone has, whether or not they listen to that urge doesn't matter much anyways.

So, what do you pirate? be honest.

Popular things to pirate include:

Music
Movies
Programs
Video Games

*Do NOT post any links to pirated conntent, just discuss, there is nothing wrong with talking about it.*

Think piracy is wrong?

Yes, I commit piracy and no, I don't think it's wrong. Sure, it would be better if it doesn't happen but how do you get stuff then? Piracy is a form of word-around, which is the best advertisement anything can get.

See, it works like this:

Drace is searching dutch bands and finds a names. He downloads 3 albums of a band called "Elegy". Drace enjoys this music.

Moosetroop comes online and asks if I have some good music. I send Moosetroop a song by Elegy and he likes it. He then tells his friends. I told my friends and shared it with them. Thus, because one person liked it and made it available to more people, more people find it and might even buy their stuff.

Same with movies and games. If I really like something and I can afford to pay for it (DVDs, CDs, Games), I'll do it. But piracy is a form of "preview" that shows everything.

My most blatant acts of piracy would have to be snes roms. This i am guilty of.

But I often argue that despite illegal downloading, i am not a music pirate.

I rarely download.
I download under two circumstances.

1- a friend tells me to check out a band. before i commit 10-35 dollars on one of their albums, I check them out. For 2 months.
If they suck, but only have one or two decent songs, I then resume stealing those decent songs and delete the old ones. One hit wonders suck, and deserve to be screwed, in my own opinion. Some would argue that, but its likely because they are either a sucky musician, or like a sucky musicians music. If you can only write one good song, you're 'suck-balls' in my books.

2-a Band Ive liked for a long time has a new album coming out. and they've "dramtically changed their style' this album. Im one of the pretentous ***hole music consumers, who often turns on a band after 'selling out'. this term is subjective, but im not spending the money on the album, until i know for fact that im not going to be embarrassed about owning the thing.

If the criteria are met I buy the music. I support the bands. I go to shows. I spread the gospel.

Being a metal fanatic, this is pretty much how its gotta be done. There are too many sub genres of metal to chance money on a new band. I dont want to own gay-emo metal. I dont want to buy the new Atreyu. i dont want to listen to a douche melodically sing about the smell of his girlfriend/boyfriends pillow and the apathy of his fathers peers.
I want to listen to balls out, blood and thunder metal. I want to hear about legendary beasts looking for prey. I want to hear some escapism.

That is my Piracy. some bands would call me a theif.
And others would call me informed.
I pay the money when its a product I like.
And im not paying for gay music.

What I don't like is when movies are being watched before they even come out. If it escalates the companies won't have as high budgets for films, etc.

Legally itīs wrong...but is the Law always right? Well, I do it a lot too, and I have the following opinion: if a artist is good enough, Iīll certainly buy his album, really. But if not, try harder, Iīll just get whatīs good.

Plus, the overprice stuff a lot, and the world offers us things we canīt buy, hoping that weīll break down and buy everything in range! SO, we gotta be smart and concentrate: do not buy. And more: never trust banks.

Okay, these last lines were kinda random, but came from the heart.

Internet piracy is the most amusing thing to come out of the whole internet, at least to me. Suddenly infinine digital copies of anything are available to whoever wants it, and so far the authories have been totally unable to do anything. Sooner or later it will come to a boiling point.

Things weren't like that twenty years ago. The world is changing. Interesting times.

Hells yeah. Snakes On A Plane in the cinema FTW!

Also, with music, I only download a -few- songs, and that's if I don't love the band. If I want to support a band, I'll buy their CDs.

Which is what annoys me (and Weregnome) is when someone's all like "Oh I totally love this band I downloaded all their albums" :| If you love something, why wouldn't you support it?

I received a notice of copyright infringement from comcast a few days ago. I'm calling it quits until I get FIOS.

Almost half of the CDs I own are strait bootlegs. I even bought them while having a very interesting conversation with a policeman. :p

I pirate:
Music by an Artist
Game Music for My Game
Roms
Game Makers
Unzip Files

and nothing else. Even with music, I'll still pay money for a real album or a concert ticket.

See, piracy like this affects Hip-Hop more than Rock. That is why they are getting people's cases for sharing music. With Rock, they make their money with concerts. This is because rock is a little easier to perform and make a show out of than Hip-Hop.
All you do is just have the band play their songs. With Hip-Hop, it needs to be a non-stop party or they have to do something extra.

Most Rappers can't do **** when it comes to performing. The pop ones especially just go out and stand there doing the two-step. It takes some hard work, and some excellent music to do something extra. That's why you see so many becoming actors and working in advertising.

I buy real albums if I like the person. This ends up being mostly Underground Music and Legendary Albums. If I just want to listen to something because it's popular, I bootleg it. :p

I did once say that I would gladly pirate a bunch of hiphop CDs just so that artist gets less money. They don't deserve money if I'm going to have to suffer their crap.

...God damn it I hate Missy Elliot.

I'm all for it, buecause it lets me try out new bands, and series without buying it. Of course, if I do like it, I'll more than willingly shell out the money.

I pirate music like crack. But, as stated before by others, bands really can't hate that. Hellevalota advertisement, especially for bands that are having hard times.

Yes, we are all pirates, Like in my game!
I still think record companies make too much money, I mean rappers and such. We buy their albums to support their habit (Drugs, alcohol) Yep. .

Yarr!

Yeah, that is an awesome point... If I pirate rappers crappy alblums, they will recieve less money... BRILLIANT!

Nah, something that does kind of bug me, is that I don't have much self control when it comes to this.. I recieved a cirtain devise that allows me to download and run fairly new products for free, although its main use is for older things... A pal of mine warned me that with great power comes great temptation, I reasured him that I would not use this new ability in the name of piracy, but boy was I wrong.. Just today I downloaded something that has only been out on the market for a few hours...

Sorry FFL, I have gone to the darkside...

I have a huge-ass Jolly Roger flag hanging above my bed, what do you think? I've pirated just about anything you can think of, but I tend to buy most of the stuff anyways. ROMs? Usually already have the games, but I'm too lazy to bust out my old consoles. Music? I have a bunch of the downloaded songs already, so who cares? Movies? Yup. Only way I'll ever see them is on my computer anyways... Programs? You bet your sloppy wetbacked penguin's vagina I've pirated them!
Let's face it, I'm a kleptomaniac/pirate. DarkFlood can vouch for me when I claim to be those. Or at least the klepto part.
Oh, by the way: :corn: <---That popcorn's pirated, too.

You guys do realize that if the police ever find this forum, they could use this thread to take you all down, right? XD

But yeah, I actually don't have a lot of illegal stuff on my comp. Most of the music I have is from OCRemix or VGMix, and I have all of no roms on my computer (and that'll go to 0 when I get a Wii), and RM2k3 doesn't count anyways. The only real big illegal thing I have is Flash, and I hardly use that anyways.

LOL, if the cops busted every single pirate, then there would be no room for the real dangerous criminals, plus who the hell would arrest everyone in the world. This day in age, I bet everyone has downloaded something illigal.

Humm I dont really download illigal stuff much anymore. But I do enjoy the lovely free and totally legal YouTube.com. Even though half the crap isnt in english, all the free music videos or anime you want to watch.

*Jenna is guilty of the following*

-->Downloading RPGmaker programs (hey if it isnt in the USA to buy how else can I use it. ROFL their own damn faults they didnt release it not mine!)

-->Downloaded Music

-->Downloaded Programs...

-->Emulators/ROMS : It's their own fault they never release english versions half the time! How else can I play these awsome games, if they dont sell them here! Stupid companies cant complain, I would buy them if they exsisted here!

Yes, I pirate **** all the time, and yes, I think it's wrong.
Downloading music is sick, and twisted. That's intellectual property, they worked so ****ing hard to make this CD and you fuckin STEAL IT ARGHGHGH

I HATE YOU.

I've downloaded a couple games I already own, but I used to get a bunch of ROMs and **** in the olde days.

Anyways, real pirates are WAY TOO FUCKIN TRENDY. AND ALSO NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS. The pirate trend may have really taken off with this gay Pirates of the Carribean shitz.

I download music, but I'm not proud of it
Is what I'm saying

I am not a musical man, why should I dish out a **** load of cash to listen to cirtain songs on demand, it's insane to do so.

As soon as someone finds a way to prevent piracy, within a few days there will be a way around it. Pirates can not be stopped.

I used to download a bunch of games to rip graphics from, but now I just play a few old NES games on an emulator when I'm really bored.

Those images you rip are property of their respective companies and are copyrighted under the protection of the law.

That is also piracy. :P

Let's sing the piracy song.

If the music is old, then I can agree with that.

Not like I'm going to find a copy of "My Sharona" in JBHiFi these days.

I never download anything that isnīt legal unless it is something that never was released here or if it is something that doesnīt exist here anymore.

For example the Nes and SNES, I only know one person who has a SNES and it is way old... So I download those games that Iīve heard is good to an emulator so I can enjoy the earlier days of videogames.

But I do download gamemusic, but that is like gamemusic only and most of the time MIDIS. Mainly cuz' I like the music and donīt feel like playing up to that point in that game just to hear it.

So no, I wouldnīt say that Iīm doing piracy(but I guess that itīs counted as it) and that is because there are no other ways of getting the games or music unless I bid on something at Ebay or any site like that...
