Title: Tips to start with.
Post by: Almeidaboo on September 18, 2006, 04:42:18 PM
So the guitar will be bought. And Iīll star from zero, and probably with no teaching: Iīll have to teach myself into it.

Any tips for a newbie guitar player to start with?

Practise. Never give up on something. No matter how long it takes and frustating it gets, in the end it will be possible. Also learn to read tabs, if you canīt already.

This website is where I started.

Where you bought your guitar is probably where you can buy guitar books and all, if not, look for a good music store and ask around

Was i talking to you? No!

As for piano you have a better chance of not dieing from cancer than finding a site for whatever it is your looking for.

Start learning basic chords, you should probably learn how to read music if you can't already.  And not just tabs. :p

I don't know anything about guitars, but I know how it is to start from zero (happened with the piano this year), but if you give it time and put all of ye in it, you can be the next damn John Petrucci! Well, maybe not that much xD

I find basic notes kinda useless unless you wanna teach it at a school.

Yeah, I did the chords part already, I got them good...I think Iīll train to switch them fast, cause I have difficulty on some of them still...

Anything else?

If you use a plectrum (the triangle thingy), practise the up-down playing thingy on one snare and just press your index finger in and fret and your next finger in the next fret. Thus training both the up-down stroll and using all fingers.

EDIT: Also if you come online, I can you show it on my cam.

My advice would be to never stop playing. Any free time you have should belong to the guitar. Like me. Im playing right now.

Oh, and practice your sweep arpeggios and economy picking... chicks love it.

I learned the guitar by doing 2 things.
1- First, I learned the MAJOR chords, (not the minors, or anything augmented) I got chord diagrams of of the O.L.G.A. google that shizzy......And I educated myself in what a POWER CHORD IS.
2-I found a band I liked, with a simple style....In my Case, Nirvana...And I studied their music, and learned their songs through TABULATURE.

After three years of sucking, I finally figured out what I was doing.5 years later, I sounded pretty decent. Learned my scales, and worked on picking.
And now Every sunday....well, not anymore, because I moved last week, some 3000 K away, I used to go play blues slide guitar, With some buddies at open Mic night.

Dont restrict yourself to one kind of music, simply because its what your friends like.
My friends Hate country and Blues. So did I. And then I found I had a knack for it, and began to appreciate the music more.

Good Luck man. Just dont ever expect the guitar to put food on your table, because thats stupid.

It's like.... hard to explain.... so heres a video!

 Sweep Arpeggios (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87Iz3RHZNDQ)

Yep.. and economy picking is the same as alternate picking... up, down really fast.

I'm good at the picking, but I need to work on sweeping.

If you want another REALLY good site (1000's of lessons), here it is:
 http://www.wholenote.com/default.asp?iTarget=http%3A//www.wholenote.com/cgi-bin/page_view.pl%3Fl%3D1886%26p%3D1%26a%3D0 (http://www.wholenote.com/default.asp?iTarget=http%3A//www.wholenote.com/cgi-bin/page_view.pl%3Fl%3D1886%26p%3D1%26a%3D0http://www.wholenote.com/default.asp?iTarget=http%3A//www.wholenote.com/cgi-bin/page_view.pl%3Fl%3D1886%26p%3D1%26a%3D0)

You need Internet Explorer to play the music, though.

It all depends on how you set the bar for yourself, on what "decent" i.Dont be Rude.
Id be willing to bet that after a year and a half youre just "decent "at one or two genres or styles. But then again, thats just my opinion.
Ive met professionals who think they suck, that dont. And some that say how good they are, but can only write one or two types of song. Dont be aarogant.

Back in the day, like 12 years ago, when I started, I starting playing songs that were way too ****ing hard for me. The first time I ever touched a guitar I started learning 'The Trooper' by Iron Maiden. It was really hard to learn, but when I was able to play it flawlessly, I could play the **** other people were still struggling with with ease. When people who started learning at the same time still couldn't play Iron Man or Smoke on the Water all the way through, I was moving on to Hendrix and Satriani.. so, that's my advice. Learn stuff that's way too hard for you.

But, did you start by yourself? Iīm having no help here, from no one...

Well, right now I have most of the chord dominated. Iīm working on exercising my hand into switching between chords and becoming more...elastic. It still hurts between my thumb and pointer finger when I play too much, and the other fingers too. But Iīm getting used to it.

I canīt say itīs great stuff, but I could play Beck's (the anime band, not the real Beck) "Iīve got a feeling" and Green Day's "poprocks and coke"  _sweat_ .

Ahh... The Trooper. Love playing it. My friend who's an awesome guitarist tought me how to play it. I agree with the learning of advanced stuff. It's not really that hard... of course I dont reccommend an absolute beginner to try out some Yngwie or Becker... but ya know..

If you learn some old school slayer, it will very much help with speed. South of heaven is very simple intro that alot of peeps start with....But really, its not that good of a learner.....
Dont start with atreyu. Theyre garbage anyways. Real men dont sing about mascara.

Ive been playing alot of mastodon lately.....
My first book of music and Tabs was the best of Led Zepplin.
Dont do this.
He tunes in alot of open chords.
Allthough fun, very confusing when you start.

Or just learn catchy songs that chicks like...sure they suck, but theres no better way to get some underage tail than playing that gay song of the week.

Just learn nothing else matters....everyone else does. Its easy to get the basic feel for, and when you have the rest of the song (not just the intro) down, youll have a good concept of what youre doing.

Seriously though......Learn your chords first.....
Despite what self-taught guitarists will say.
You can play metal riffs until youre blue in the face, but
without a knowledge of how the chords work,
your grasp on guitar theory will be shyte.

Tabs are easier to understand if you know the chords those little gay *** numbers are part of.

Same. Rather than learning at other peoples songs, try making your own. My guitar lessons are basically jam sessions, except he teaches me cool scales, chord progressions and stuff. My guitar teacher is 100% self-taught, and he's better than any other guitarist i've know who only learn other people's songs and have been playing for twice as long as he has.

Learning other poeple's songs isn't bad, it's good practice, but it's just not your own song. Music is much more fun when you play something that amazes everyone and when they ask who wrote it, you can say, "I did.".

I quote the song Bleeding Mascara.

"There's no beauty in bleeding mascara."

So, you disagree with them? You love girls with bleeding mascara? You sicken me.

Al, don't listen to MrMister. They're good to start with to practise chords and some easier riffs and speed. And MrMisters gay, btw. You wanna listen to someone who wants to rape your pure, non-gay ***?

Dude, you just quoted them...that makes you even gay-er.

I saw atreyu last year, and that douche meldoy frontman they have was wearing so much eyeshadow....
You can quote it all you want....every second songs on their first two albums were in some way related to the medias impact on girls self esteem, or the smell of hair on pillows, or some emo crap like that.

Atreyu is Emo....er.....sorry.......Screamo....Hardcore screamo.Floor punching, Air kicking Emo and Hardcore kids ruining moshpits by beating up invisible men who try to oppress their hate for their dads that never hugged them.
And if thats not gay, I dont know what is.

The sad thing is, it sounds good at first....And then it goes to the dogs when you find the gayness.

Listening to Atreyu means you are one step away from tight girly pants and blonde streaks in black anime-hair.

But the atreyu fans are mostly a bunch of floor punching ex-limpbizkit fans anyhow.

And dont get me started on Silverstein...they opened that show, and I spent it with bleeding ears in the beer gardens waiting for the good bands to play.

*eagerly awaits a retort*

Atreyu is in my top 5 bands since two years ago. I think you can better give me that fifty now unless you need to save up three years to get that much money.

The only Limb Bizkit song I've listened to is Behind Blue Eyes.

EDIT: Also, I can conclude from that anti-Atreyu post that you were never hugged by your dad. That's just sad to whine about that.
