Title: Spyware, Adware, And a maxed credit card
Post by: plightofthepureblood on September 22, 2006, 02:09:51 PM
So my poor laptop is riddled with spyware.

I get these stupid adware popups even when my Iexplorer isnt open.

I searched around, and tried some removal programs, but the problem only got worse.

Then I got what I thought was a good program for removal, and it had a 15 day trial...."sweet" says I.....
After the scan i go to quarrantine and remove the crud, and BAM, they want my registration key.

This has happened with a few of the apps I was trying.

Some of them scan, and then freeze up when Trying to remove crap.
Counterspy wont let me remove stuff without a reg key
AdaweareSE misses the files, and glitches when it goes to delete the files.

Does anyone know of any free apps that will actually get this stupid corporate shizzy of of my laptop?

My cerdit card is maxed, so I cant even order the dang reg. key for counterspr.

What the hell? Get some money to buy a real program. Save up; pinch your pennies, or whichever currency you use.

Well, Ive gotten rid of a good chunk of my spyware, but there are still things my program missed.

Is there a huge difference between a spyware and an adware remover?

PS: I hit the microsoft spyware page....it worked well.

If it is a randomly spawning Pop up window, wait till it apears, then hit CTRL + ALT + Delete.

Try to figure out which one is the pop up by searching the names on google. (If it makes your computer slow down, then just look up the one that takes up the most CPU. (And choose to end the process, to give your computer some speed back.)

Once you figure out what the process is, you may be able to stop it yourself.

Let's use Derman.exe for example.

Click the start button, hit the run option.

In the text input box, type "Msconfig" and hit enter.

This will make system configuration utility pop up, here you can disable cirtain things.

Switch over to the Startup tab, and search for Derman.exe. If it is on the list, uncheck it and hit apply.

It will ask you to reset, if you want the effects to take place immediatly, then you should probably restart then.

(Note, not sure if it works like this on windows ME, but if so, this should help.)

Or, you could just get a mac, or switch to linux.

AVG Free Edition
AdAware
...Others?

I'll have to ask my friend, he knows a ton of good things that are free...

Desktop>My Computer>Conrol Panel>Internet Options>Content

On old (win9x) PCs, it should have an Add/Remove-Utilities-esque menu, where you can disable non-triggered windows from spawning.
On newer (winME/XP) PCs it should have a nice, little, clicky box that is labeled in big letters,"Block Pop-Ups."

I also recommend you use Firefox (http://getfirefox.com).

Ad-Aware
Spybot
Spy Sweeper (get free trial)
These should be almost all you need for Spyware removal
for AntiVirus:
AVG (i think it sucks but better than nuthin)
Avast (there is a Home edition that you can register for free just by signing up and it kicks the hell outta AVG)
