From what I can tell after seeing some of it, it's basically programming a game to auto-play perfectly from the beggining to the end. Like, you program the commands "after the game starts, press 'right' for 15 seconds, then jump while holding right, and then..." etc. In this way, the game can be seem from beggining to end REAL fast. Thus why it's called a speedrun.
I've seem Aladdin being beaten in 14 minutes
youtube.com/watch?v=vs3ws9xE15Y&NR
And believe me, that's nearly impossible without this tool.
I searched a while, and found this site:
http://tasvideos.org/
You can actually find lot's of games videos there. I made sure there's no ROMs in the site before posting the link, before you ask. BUT I could be wrong.
Anyway, I'm on my way to download Kirby Superstar being beaten at 47:23 minutes. That may seem long, but it took me about 5 hours to beat it.

I dont think so. There was some back tracking and stuff when they thought they grabbed an item and didn't. It's just guys that have nothing better to do than memorize level layouts. Makes me sad though, genesis Aladdin would kick my *** as a kid. SNES was a pushover.

Dunno about that. They've got the program for imputing the commands in the site even.
Besides, it's impossible to memorize such things as if a boss'll jump at the right time or not.
