Title: The software
Post by: TERROJA on November 02, 2006, 05:02:21 AM
I was just wondering if you folks have considered converting to phpBB or SMT. This software looks good but there are a few inconveniences, and some other board solutions are really worth the download. You can even convert everything in your forum to another format.

Just my two cents.

I've thought about this several times myself, and the conclusion I've come to is that it would take a massive effort to move over everything, and if we decided to do it from a blank slate and just have everyone's posts reset, it would still take a lot of time to reintegrate - the forums are tied in the the generators and complete resources - you register for everything on the site by registering for the forums.

I know there's mods for everything, but currently we have no particular problems that make the time and work required really worth it.

I think that using a hand-coded forum makes us "unique" in the sense that there's no board like us on the net, and as Moose said, everything's integrated. Of course, we could easily integrate, say, a phpBB with the generators and CR, but it really just isn't worth the time.

Your suggestion is valid, though. There are several downsides to a homemade forum, and if we have some sort of fatal flaw in the code that can't be easily fixed, we would have to switch to another system.

To be honest I've only seen one thing which might need some attention, and it's very minor. Occasionally when I attempt to post something, or when I attempted to register or anything like that, hitting the back button on the browser after I recieved an error message of some sort resulted in the 'OK' button not responding to clicks.

But I'm very impressed either way.
