Title: XP perspective charset idea...needs refinement
Post by: plightofthepureblood on November 16, 2006, 10:29:52 PM
SO Ive got an idea...for my project in RMXP.

Now, As you may know, In rpgxp, you can use all kinds of sizes for you charsets...

The Idea, is for a sort of FF7,8,9 feel, when navigating maps.

Now, I plan on using nothing but panos and custom chips.

Now, say I make a charsets, of Character A.

And I make about 6 more of the same character....
3 smaller, progressively, and 3 larger, progressively...

oN  my maps, I could have an Event that would change the charaset, depending on where the hero was standing...

The lower event tiles, would have the character  gradually change charsets to larger versions of the hero, to make him look closer.

And as the hero travelled to the top most tiles, the hero's sprite would get smaller, to make him seem further away.

The thing Im worried about is the transition from sprite to sprite..

Has anyone ever seen this done before, and if so, how was the transition? Did it look stupid? Did it look good? Any input on how to do this effectivly and not have it look like garbage?

Everything is made to look 2-d animated, but Id like to stray away from the whole top-down thing if I can.....

The one problem I thought of, is being as the project uses an SBABS, it would make fighting more buggy, as things wouldnt line up right with the larger and smaller chipsets....

But I could then limit the Active battle to certain maps, which could then be shown in the traditional TOp-down view....

But yeah, uh.....

What do you guys think? Is it a good Idea, or does it sound stupid?
Suggestions, input etc?

It'd be easier to make a Ruby Script that changed the size auto matically.

I thought of that too....

But Im not a very good scripter. I can tweak fine, but Im just picking up ruby....

perhaps I can find some help on an xp forum, with scripting...

Make a lot of different sprite sizes so the transition is smoother. That's the only thing I can think of if you want this to work.

What the heck, man?

You're not new here, why did you topic-kick?

Mayhaps he was just trying to help. A topic kick isn't a topic kick if it's helpful and contributes to the thread. And honestly, I thought it was helpful.
