Title: Current Flash Drawings
Post by: Trevlac on January 10, 2007, 11:50:52 PM: So you all remember how horrible my Flash drawings were from the start. Then Osmose told me to get serious about it and I did. Carmen kept pwning my drawings and whatnot with her special attack: I_Can_Draw. So I sat on my *** and patiently taught myself how to draw.

Now I've done a few better drawings since those few years ago. I'd like to share them. Take note that these are all done with a computer mouse - for I still cannot draw with a pencil for crap.

This is Ordin. He's the character of a friend of mine who resembles a Red Mage. I decided to go ahead and draw Ordin for him and this is how it turned out.

Alice Eisbrecher. A character I made up to go along with Trevlac. She stabbys people with a butcher knife. This is my most current drawing and it's the one I'm most proud of. I want to thank Osmose and Carmen for helping "motivate" me to this level. Don't think that means I'm going to stop now though.

The only fault I can find with either is that the coloring is okay, but I never liked that style (I guess it's a commonly used photoshop brush or something, because I see that type of coloring a lot). The coloring itself is fine, it's just the brush used - it brings out a style that I personally don't like.

The skill is certainly not at fault for that, however. Great job. :P

EDIT: One tip, though: If you're having trouble drawing nice, smooth lines, try drawing a boxy outline with the line tool and then curving the lines with the black pointer - it makes doing smooth stuff 10x easier. Your freehand is great, though.

I was trying to move a fill out of a circle for some random school thing (I like to make it as insane as possible, IE when asked for a gumball machine, make it a slaw machine that picks up a baby, rips off it's head, and then have it come out of the gumball slot) and the line bent. I was all "Woah."

'nother useful tip: After you select the pencil, look on the lower-middle left. There's three different line types you can choose from: Ink(More or less exactly what you draw), Straight(Straight lines and angles when it can, makes circles when you draw what could be one, etc.), or Curved (Smooths out lines to be more curvy and smooth and generally better-looking, although this process screws up what you're trying to draw sometimes).

Post by: Trevlac on January 11, 2007, 04:03:46 AM: I do curvy. Then I edit the properties of the line and make it 0.5 and ragged with sharp corners and all the settings at none. That way it still sort of curves my lines but I have mor freestyle.

Holy shitbagels. Moose, I could kiss you. This is the result of using that method:

I whipped out Flash, picked a cool Seras Victoria pose from Hellsing and went to work. I used the manga for a reference - breifly so that I could do the regenerating blood in Adobe Illustrator CS. Then it was off to Photoshop where she got her final makeover. You said you didn't like that style of shading and neither did I. But I figured out what makes it look so bad; you burn and dodge with small brushes. So I made the brushes really large and got just the right amount of shading. Her thighs turned out sumptuous. Add a few sparkles for effect, glare and sharpen the eyes, shamelessly steal and edit a haunted house wallpaper, and PRESTO! Insta-Seras.

VICTORY.

Much like you a while ago a lot of my art is pretty bad, but onlike you rather than sit down and force myself to get better over time I essentially complained a lot and mostly gave up. I respect perseverence in a field you're not naturally good at far more than I respect natural skill. Bravo my friend!

But yes, that shading is WAY better (Although I'd like to see what a few more hard shadows would do to your work). The bigger brushes are amazing. :Plight:

EDIT: Also, maybe some of the lines for ruffles in the shirt and such could be a darker variant of the fill color instead of pure black? I mean, I don't mean to keep busting your chops after such great improvement, I just think it may look better (Or it may not). :)

Yeah, I only said I do about a hundred times.

I know the black is not great. I add the base colors in Flash and I was thinking of trying hard anime shadows. As I completely failed I just went with Photoshop. Forgot to change the black.

Anyways, if you're using ps, and going for the typical coloring style in anime, you can use brushes with lower opacity. Lay down the base, select a lighter color set to 20%, and add the shading accordingly.
