Charas-Project

Ok, if you are just reading this thread for the first time than ignore the comments below. This thread was originally meant to be a fun thread that got people excited about an upcoming contest. My idea kinda flopped.
What is this about?
Starting at the beginning of next month there will be the not quite first Annual Charas Game Making Contest. This will be a contest in which people make short, 1/2 hour to 1 hour games, and then have them judged.
The judges are
myself
Meiscool
Ace of Spades
Coasterkrazy
Dragonblaze
(so start sucking up now)
I won't tell you anything now as far as rules or what you're being judged on goes. Everything specific will be told in the contest thread when it's released.
I do want everyone to get involved in this. And I don't just mean by making games. This can involve spriters, music makers, rippers, etc. I want the whole community involved in this in some way or another. It's about time Charas actually had some games!
-
Something... Special? Hints? Hmm... I like the sounds of this.
-
OH OH! R I 1 UF DA SEVN?
-
Does it involve hamsters and crackers in any way?
-
I probably know... just cant think of anything right now...
-
ZKX, you have no idea how close you are...
-
You could've answered my question.
Jackass. :vampire:
-
If you simply must have an answer. Yes, yes you are.
Here that ppl's, Meiscool knows the secret!!! But you can't bribe him...
unless it involves alter boys or small rodents.... but that's a story for another day.
-
I take bribes.
-
I'll give you my "goods." ;) That work?
-
A virtual pie eating contest where goats spout fire and Santa is a Texan.
*shrug*
I dunno, but I'm likely not going to be surprised.
So far there has been...
Charas The Movie which never got made
Charas Community Game which never got made
There was that game made by Gary...
Some animation done in RM2K
Uhhhh...
I'm just not surpriseable anymore. XD
OOOH! Charas FPS!

I pretty much agree this will end in something boring, or nothing happening,
The supprise might be theres no supprise! =O GASP I'VE BLOWN YOUR MIND.
-
4 years of Charas?
5 years of Charas?
Something with the age of the forum?
-
Either the forum's birthday or anal sex.
Or a third thing.
Even though the forum was arguably created earlier than March or whenever, since before this forum there was that smaller test forum thing Alex made.
-
Well, I will admit that this isn't going to be as big as some of you are probably thinking, but it will happen. I am hoping to get the entire community involved with this though.
the whole point of this thread, i was advised that I should tell people about this before just simply starting it. I was originally gonna wait till the end of the week, but I wanted to have some fun. And so far one person has been on the right track...

All the more better for me.
-
It's not that the idea is dumb(Although depending on how many people actually finish, it could just end up being a failed attempt), it's the weird, mysterious way he wants to present it - it'd be a lot cooler if he just did it, because the suspense adds nothing to it.
-
I'm not interested.
At all. You really have no idea how to get somebody worked up about something. Really.
-
Well it's not starting until the end of the month, this was supposed to just be a fun way to wait for it. But in retrospect it's prolly not the best prelude. And considering the nature of this event people will prolly need the extra time to prepare.
Meh, if someone who knows what it is wants to tell everyone then go ahead. If no one does I'll just tell you all later.
You all went and ruined my fun... :(
and Osmose, don't condemn it to failure when it hasn't started, instead try and get people excited about it and help me get people to finish the event.

-
Will there be a new generator?
like a chipset generator, where you upload pieces of it, and it plops ou t a full chipset?
-
I'm not "condemning it's failure", regardless of that being a double negative, I'm simply saying that with something like this it's possible it could fail.
Frankly, I think you should've just started it now rather than trying to "build up hype" by saying "something is coming." Charas doesn't buy stuff like that.
PS: Chipset generator... wonder if that's possible. (toys with settings for a bit) Limited, but certainly possible.

For frick's sake man. This is your project. Its your job to salvage it when things start going bad like this. But since you're not going to, I'll do it for you. Just this once.
Glitch's idea is to have a very short game contest. Only 1/2 hour to 1 hour long at most. Sort of like Meiscool's contests in that it doesn't require too much work and has a rather short deadline. People get a few days to just whip up something random and then everyone plays them and has fun. Probably some judging and prizes in there somewhere, I don't know, not really my idea, but the main purpose is to just get people back into game making and flood the forum with a lot of little minigames to have some fun with.
-
Ah, I see. Sounds like an excellent idea. I will definetely be participating in this.
*Feigns interest*

Well the reason I said that was cause I was at work and had to get off the computer right then. I was coming back on now (my lunch break) to explain. But I see you beat me to it.
Ok, Yes, this is Charas (not quite first annual) but hopefully first successful game making contest!!! (
As we've all heard multiple times from our detractors, for an rpg maker web site we have a severe lack of games to show. In the sanc people were complaining bout different stuff, and so I decided to do something about it.
I want people to get involved, and get excited, instead of everyone working on a bunch of projects we know are not going to ever be finished, why not everyone just make some small easily finishable games. Gives everyone some games to play, and gives people the ability to say they completed a game.
well work calls, I'll explain the rest later.
-
Some good points in there. We could do with some games...
I remember a while back there was a contest going where everyone made a Christmas-themed mini-game (I think Warxe organised it), and then they were all going to be put together into one big mini-game collection type thing at the end. 'Course it failed, mainly because people either couldn't think of ideas because the range of things they were allowed to do was too narrow, or (more likely) because people got lazy and didn't finish their games. But the point was that it made people work on their games - the majority got at least part of their games made.
So instead of just saying "lol, make a game", could we do something similar to that? I mean, it's not based around a holiday or real theme, so we'd get a good range of different ideas.
Hell, I may take part. Thing is a lot of people won't because they know that things like this usually fail.
But hey, we've had that many failed contest, think how cool it'd be to actually have one that was successful. Only way to do that is to keep on trying, right?
Meh, I'm done. In a short while I expect MrMister will laugh at my sentiments and call me a gaytard. Or something.
-
Well, I plan to enter. It will be a good way to get my battle system beta tested.
Really people, you don't have to make a completely new game. All you've got to do is take a segment of a game you've made and add a begining and an ending. Hell, even if you want some coding you've done tested for bugs, all you've gotta do is put a little plot around the coding and walla, you've got a game and some people forced to test your codes.
-
I like that you are willing to give it a shot instead of just saying, "Who cares, it's gonna fail anyway"
Would anyone care if I just deleted this waste of a thread and started this anew as a thread to discuss the upcoming contest?
But yeah, Sai recommended to me that I try and make it charas related, and I have some ideas. And the judges for this contest have been very helpful for developing this into a contest I believe will succeed!

I just now read this. This reminds me of an old idea I had.
Basically, one person hosts the game and it's ideas. Several people donate one map to the game, with whatever events, chipsets, and graphics they want. All they are required to do is put in an event related to the plot. People would zip up the map and graphics used in the map, and send it to the person who hosts the game. That person would then put the maps in order, and we would have a completely random game of a random quest of a prechosen topic. I've seen this work before, over 20 maps of a game. Because so many people with good humour entered the game making, it lead to a really random, funny outcome.
Of course, this would be something for a later time. Glitch has worked hard on getting everything sorted out for this contest and getting all the judges around. If enough people like the above idea, maybe I'll host it a month from now.
-
I like the idea. Uhm. More info maybe? Like.. deadline?
-
I'm officially starting the contest next month, all official rules and deadlines will be posted then. In the meantime, start thinking of ideas, gathering resources, do some basic work, etc.
I'll give some more pertinent details after work.
-
Sounds fun, mebbe. But I don't have time even for my current game as it is :(
-
I wonder if I can do something isometric. If not, I'd love to make a minigame or something for this. All I need is a plot.
As for game making spirit, I agree. We should have more finished games. I think it's a morale thing. The reasons I still work on mine come from constant encouragement.
-
An interesting concept, no doubt.
I give permission to everyone to verbally abuse me into tears if I don't complete something for this project. But in agreeing to that, you also give me the same liberty.
-
I like that people are supportive,
+5 in encouragement.
If you guys have any ideas as to ways to make this more likely to succeed then go ahead and suggest. Myself and the judges will talk it over before this contest begins. For instance, what would be more encouraging to you, a really short time limit or a bit more lax one to give you time to get things right.
I'm off work now, so check in later on the first post for detailed explination of what is goin on.

A month? Can you at least tell us if we need to use RPG Maker or not?
-
I'll be entering too :)
Anyway, I like the idea behind this contest. I got some ideas brewing for a cool short game. I don't know if I'll be adding many cool scripts and such to my game due to my lack of time, which is kinda ironic since I'll be judging the programming aspects of the games. Oh well, it'll be fun :)
-
I'd enter, but none of NFT is actually complete except the resources. Just various scattered maps from different parts of it, but if I ever get the drive to ever complete section 1, I'll enter it. however, due to lack of time, it will probably lack part of the beginning movie.
Still waiting for Dragonblaze's CBS to be finished. _sweat_ Then I could at least complete up to the first fight with Ace (half of part 1/6).
-
I'd like to assume we are expected to make a game for the contest started as of late, not enter a game we've been working on for awhile right?
-

You have a point, ZKX. We can't just allow projects far into work, like Metal Tears and Omega seal. There should be some limit for projects that were under heavy work before the contest.
+20 agreement

That still really hasn't been decided. You can't submit a project that you've already made. Basically, I'm thinking that you'll be able to use stuff from current games, but you can't use the games themselves. Like you could use some maps and stuff like that, but you can't just take your game and just add a few things and submit that.
Still waiting for Dragonblaze's CBS to be finished. Then I could at least complete up to the first fight with Ace (half of part 1/6).
Lol, funny thing about that. I've been working on it a lot, and I've been transfering my project to and from school a lot, so I just decided to put the cbs on my jump drive and run it off of there. Well the thing is, as of yesturday, I lost my jumpdrive :eyes: I'm sure it'll pop up somewhere soon enough, but I don't know where it is right now :( Otherwise, I keep backups on my computers, so if its gone or something, I'll still have a fairly new version.
Anyway, if I submit a game in this contest, I'll most likely be using my cbs in that. My cbs is at a point where everything works, just not everything is added yet. So if I don't get my cbs done by time this project is done, you'll all be able to see a sneek peek at what it'll be like.

So you skip that part and do everything after it!
It doesn't take a genius to figure that out!

If this is an XP friendly contest, Im in.
The battle system in my project is being beta tested, and Im writing some custom scripts...
So in a month or so, Ill be ready
-
Ok, so here be the deal, it doesn't start in a month, it starts at the beginning of next month, that's like ten days. So use this time wisely.
Yes, this must be a new project. Obviously Meiscool can't submit metal tears cause he's had months to work on it. However he can use maps, resources, and parts of it, it just has to be a new game. It can even be a prologue or prequel to it if he wants, just not the same game. That explain?
It is primarily for 2k3 games, but we will be accepting some XP and 2k games as well, just everyone try and keep it 2k3, obviously that's not possible for some so we have those exceptions.
Does that clear things up?
When the contest begins I will post more details and specific rules, in addition to how your games will be scored.
I will give something away right now. At the recommendation of someone I am going to be making this charas involved. Meaning that for using certain aspects of charas you will win brownie points in the judging. By this I mean, using the generators, taking requests of other contestants, helping out other people. etc...
-
Two things worry me at this point.
The first is that you've mentioned that people can use resources and parts from their existing games (In your last post you said
about a Metal Tears sequel). It bugs me that people are going to set out and make huge great fat-arse games. We've said 30 minutes to 1 hour in length, right?
My second issue comes here:

So, where are the barriers between "looks good" and "uses the generators"? I mean, using the generators for nigh on everything will score points, but the game'll probably look like hell, which by right should lose a few points, am I right?
I know you've said you'll explain the rules when the contest begins, but could we have a few pointers in the meantime? I for one would like to get started a little in advance and I'd like to know what I should be keeping in mind.
Anyway, it looks like this one just may be a bit successful after all.
-
I would actually like to play the games instead of making one. Im to busy getting the art work for my one game as is.
-
Honestly, the only way to completley level the field here is to limit it to non XP format, And must contain a certain degree of defaults.
Generated resorces would need to be implemented somehow.
Or even a theme/topic to it all
With XP stuff, a guy can just copy a script and make a TBS, another one, youve got ring menus. This all = Unfair to some.
If it were limited to RTP or C.R, or Generator stuff, Id be down with entering, had I the time......
I wouldnt mind playing the games....helping judge or something.....
Im to busy getting the art work for my one game as is.
-
If this is an actual "make a game" contest instead of a minigame contest, don't you think 10 days is a little short notice without giving away the rules?
Also, I started this second project to FF Reminiscence a month ago. Since I pretty much haven't touched it, can I use that?
-

Dude.... I'll be lucky if my little game makes it to the ten minute mark. Like I said, it's just something for me to test my battle system on. If it takes someone over the 30 min through 1 hour length to kill some of my foes, meh.
-
The Xp dealy. I said we would make exceptions for XP, but that doesn't mean you will be judged on the same scale as others.
Also, the generators. Put it this way, you will score better for having good resources than you will for having all generated resources. However you are encouraged to use the generators. This does not mean that all of your resources should be generated, you are just encouraged for using them.
You have more than 10 days to make the game, the CONTEST STARTS in 10 days, ish. You will have until the deadline after it starts. use these 10 days to prepare.
No one should be making big games. These are LITTLE MINI GAMES!
They should just be around half hour, no more than 1 hour!
Guys, just get resources ready, there are no limits on what kind of game you make. You'll find out what rules there are at the end of next week. If you are absolutely unsure about whether you can do something or not feel free to pm me or one of the judges.
-
Gah, iīm out of this one...Iīd love to participate, but I havenīt touched RPGMaker in a long time, I wouldnīt be able to finish it...Not to mention my criativity crisis, which blocks me from thinking of anything good and original...-.-
Anyway, good luck contestants!
-
Almeida spoke for me there... my imagination never lacks XD but my gaming skills are rather low, so I'm completely out of the ocntest...
In other words... good luck!!!!
-
Well, I think I've finally got a gap in my busy schedule, so I might get something thrown together. Mebe.
-
10 days to make a game. Its doable, but theres really not much you can do in 10 days. Anyway, as I understand, games don't need to be 30 minutes to an hour long. Anything under an hour will be fine. Obviosly, a well made 10 minute game probably won't score as high as a well made 40 minute game. But a great 10 minute game will probably score better than a poor 40 minute game. I could be wrong though
-
or maybe a 15 minute game, done slightly well, but with 3 minutes of FMV.Or like, 30 minutes of horrid graphics, is>5 minutes of greatness,or
if it was thirty minutes and it felt like it was two minutes, unless you play for only 10 minutes then it feels more like five, for some reason. But if you play for 20 minutes, It feels like 23 minutes. Unless youve played it once before, then its only like 15. Which brings me back to my initial point....
-
I have a question. CoD2, the game I just released, has a pretty cool minigame / puzzle thing in it. Could I rip out the puzzle, put it in a new project, and submit it as an entry? It would fit length requirements and I could jazz it up with some generated characters.
Or does doing something like that go against the spirit of the contest? I'm not out to ruin your idea here. I just want to know what is acceptable.
-
hmm, well Sai, you could do that, but you would have to put some substance along with it. Create some form of story, and some form of game, because you wouldn't actually be doing any work after the contest started, you would need to put at least a few days of work alongside the puzzel. Through in some new characters, a new story, maybe some fun boss fights, stuff like that.
Remember the whole idea of the contest is to have fun making new games. I don't mind if you use parts of old games, but you gotta make something new.
DB is judging programming so it's up to him to decide how he wants to score people who are using old stuff.
-
This goes for everyone, as long as you do the programming, I won't downgrade you on anything. So yeah, Sai, I won't downgrade you at all for using that puzzle from your current game.

Nothing
I guess it's about time I explained Bonus points. Originally I wanted to keep these secret till the last minute. But I guess I should let you in.
For doing certain things, you will receive bonus points. These go towards your score, and get make the difference if say you are at a 7.5, a bonus point or two will bump you up to an 8. Get it?
Now, we are not going to tell you how to get bonus points. But trust me, they are things you don't have to actively try to do. All I will tell you is that one of the bonus points is charas generated resource related.
Also, please note I am mostly referring to the Character set generator, not the battle set or face set generators, cause those can look really fugly sometimes.

What I 'think' he means is that you should skip the battles for now, and work on other things such as maps, events, and everything else besides the battles. This way, you don't have to take a break from working on your game because my cbs isn't done. THEN when my cbs gets done, you can go in and add in the battles. Don't skip the battles perminately, just for now until I get the cbs done.
-
I'm already working on my game. Problems are it's isometric and it's one of those never ending/unwinnable games (Tetris, Pong, etc.) Also it won't use anything Charas related at all.
More people enter! :p

UNTIL the system is done. Jesus Christ.
You can have the game out shortly after the system is done, then.
-
Aboutso. You can enter an iso game, and I reiterate,
IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE CHARAS RELATED IN ANY WAY!
It's a freaking bonus point, it will not make or break your game.
As long as it's made on RM it can be entered. If it has no story than it'll just get graded down.

This cloak and dagger crap is irritating. If we get points for
- , tell us that we get points fpr
- .
-
for the love of God just wait a few days, it'll all make sense then. The bonus points are just little fun things for us judges, they are not going to make or break your game, as I've said before. If you do certain things in your game, it'll be what pushes you up if your on the edge. 'kay? They're simple things to, things you should be doing already.
If you have further questions on the subject just PM me cause i get the feeling people are getting confused.
-
Ok, I don't know how any of the other judges will be juding their areas, but I can explain how I'm going to judge the programming aspects of the game.
Anyway, I'm assuming that each catagory will be worth 10 points, if we're only having it 5 points or something, I'll have to adjust my scale, but it'll be the same concept.
As a judge on programming, I won't give any bonuses or subtractions for having something charas related in your game, or using generated graphics.
0 points - You use all the defult systems, AND your simple game mechanics are done poorly. Poorly includes, but is not limited to, teleporting to a wrong map, events not ended with a switch, and any kind of other errors in coding/scripting. The way I see it, if you don't have any real coding in your game, you shouldn't get any points for coding.
1 - 2 points - You use all the defult systems, have no minigames, but the simple game mechanics are programmed right, all places are set to teleport where they're supposed to, events are turned off when their supposed to, and everything works error free.
3-4 points - You use all the defult systems, have no minigames, but include a few extra features in your game due to coding/scripting. Examples of which would be an in game clock, a day night system, etc.
5-6 points - you use mainly the defult systems, but you include mini games or larger coding features (such as a party changing system).
7-8 points - You use either a custom battle system, custome menu system, OR a system/mini game that acts as a major part of the game, or would be just as important and used as a battle system or a menu system.
9-10 points - You use a lot of custom systems, most of the things in your game are custom coded/made, coding adds a lot to the overall game, or coding is very impressive overall. I don't expect to be giving any 10s out.
Points will be added and subrtacted as follows.
If you have a minigame or custom system, but is very poortly programmed, for example a party changing system, if it is programmed such as you are a character walking around a map, and talking to the characters you want to join your party, you'll probably get around 3 or 4 points because the coding is poorly done. IF you make an actual menu with a cursor, nice graphics, and a nice setup that works like a good party changing system should, you'll get the 5 or 6 points. The game goes for battle systems, if you have a custom battle system, but it is really poorly made, you won't get the points as you would if you made a well programmed one. It can be simple, but it has to look and work good.
Points will be subracted if you have programming errors in your simple codes, even if you have a mini game or other stuff that gets you in the higher point range.
If you have a lot of little extra features, you'll get bonus points. A few extra features such as an in game clock will get you around the 3 or 4 point range, but a lot of little things like a custom message system, and stuff like that will get you higher points.
You will automatically recieve a 0 if you use someone elses system/coding. Using something from a tutorial is fine, but copying a system out of another game not made by you is not acceptable. Likewise, if someone made a system for your game, you can't use it unless you give credit to the person and state specifically what systems they made/coded. You can do this either in the game, or included in a seperate text document included with the game. Now since this is a contest one which game you can make, you will most likely not be graded at all on a system that you didn't make yourself (but gave credit to the person who did), basically I'll judge as if it wasn't included at all. On some occasions, I may give some points for other peoples systems in your game, like if the other person is on a game making team with you or something, but it won't be full points.
Thats pretty much the basics of it, I may add some more things when the contest actually starts.

So using your CBS would be a 0 then?
And what about the people who don't know HOW to make a CBS/CMS. I can make a Custom Skill Learning System, and I did before, it'd be a simple matter of copying that of course. It's 30+ pages of coding, for multiple characters.

No, you can use my cbs, only problem is that I don't have it out really yet. But if someone would use my cbs, and they give me credit for it, I'll grade their project for the other programming they have in it, and not my cbs. After all, it would be my cbs, and it wouldn't really be fair for someone else to get points in their game for something I made.
And for people who don't know how to make a CBS/CMS. I'm grading this on programming. If someone isn't good at making more complex systems, then they won't be graded as high. Its like a map making contest, if a person doesn't know how to make a good map, they won't get graded as high as someone who knows how to make a good map (and makes a good map). So in the same way, if someone knows how to make a good system, and makes the system, they should get graded higher in the programming aspect of this contest than a person who doesn't make a good system.

We shall see about that.

The way I see it, a 10 is a 100% perfection. And since I pretty much believe that there is alwyas room for improvement, we'll see. So to get a 10 for programming, the programming aspect of your game has to be REALLY good. But anyway, shoot for the 10, you might get one :)

But what if someone makes a really kickass game, but it uses the default systems??
-
The scores are going to be averaged out between all five judges.
Let's say you get the following scores
DB - 2
Meis - 8
Glitch - 9
Ace - 9
CK- 7
and you get, say 2 bonus points. (note, these are between .25 and .50 points.)
Your score would be a 7 default. Then factor in bonus points...
7.75, or depending on what points you get, 8.
All in all a fairly solid score.
And remember, someone may have beautiful programming, but their storyline is drab, and their maps are boring, then they might get...
DB - 8
Meis - 5
Glitch -4
Ck - 8
Ace - 7
6.4
A less solid score.
Make sense?

Yeah, like glitch said, if someone makes a really good game, but uses all defult systems, they can still win easily. Programming is only 1/5. And basically the only thing thats going to beat a great game with defult systems is a great game with custom systems. Plus I still give points for using all the defult systems, just not as much.

Welp, at the very least, you have gotten me off my ***. Can we know what the deadline is sooner, since I work 6 days a week 8 - 12 hrs per shift, I don't exactly have a whole lot of downtime. So if I can know when the deadline is, I can know if I'll have the time/energy to get it made. I know the game is only a half hour, but it won't take a half hour to make...

Lol, I think I got my idea for a game, it'll be more of a comedy game. Anyway, I'm not gonna start working on any of it until the contest actually starts, but I couldn't help but make the title screen.
BTW, anyone ever read the dragon tails webcomic? :p

I thought dragon tails was some kid's show about a scale that transports these kids to dragonland 0_o

Yeah, I never watched that show. What I'm gonna base my game off of is a webcomic called dragon tails (dragon-tails.com). Theres over 2000 comics made for it, and I think its pretty good (except for the name...).
